Comments: I felt very welcomed by Gregg, the property was beautiful. the water was hot and there was fruit a plenty. Anyone who's looking for a clean friendly place would enjoy this place.

Comments: When I arrived, Greg was there to welcome me and show me around. He informed me of a few things around the area so I could go out and explore. The place was exactly what the listing showed, except the bed was exceptionally more comfortable than expected! Thanks so much for a great stay!

  • Reviewer: Quincy

Comments: This room had a really good feel to it. Very clean and good vibes. Really nice bathroom and shower. I would love to stay again if I visit the area. Overall exceeded my expectations from the listing and consider it very affordable for what you get. I was looking for a place to stay at the last minute and the host got in touch right away and helped me get set up. Host made me feel welcome, made sure I had everything I needed and gave some great advice about a nearby beach to visit. Overall positive experience and would recommend!

Comments: Great experience from the beginning to end. Very close to the Waipio lookout- we walked. The rooms are clean and the bed was very, very comfortable. Swriously, more comfortable than thr resort we stayed at the night prior. No bugs in the room and easy to keep them out of common area if you keep the door closed. Great hosts, very helpful and accommodating. I would definitely stay here again if I am ever in the area. You also get to meet fellow travellers, which is also nice.

Comments: We only stayed one night but anyway we had a great time. It is a perfect place to discover the Waipio Valley (Very close to the hostel, it's just a 15 minute walk) and to get to know other people. The room was very nice, the bed was comfy and the garden beautiful. All in all a very cozy place to stay. Mahalo Greg for your hospitality :)

  • Reviewer: Tamer

Comments: The room was very nice and comfortable. Greg was very prompt to answer my questions. When I arrived there was no one at his place, so I texted him to see which room I was staying at. It was an amazing experience to pick up oranges, guavas in the morning and have them for breakfast. The only problem was the line for the bathroom in the mornings. It would have been nice to see Greg during my visit but I couldn't.

Comments: Greg & Harmony were very accommodating and gracious hosts. Their two children added a delightful element. The accommodations were clean and met our needs perfectly! Met some very fun guests as well during our time. Loved the fruits that were available as well. Thanks for enabling a very special HI stay.

Comments: Waipio Hostel is a great spot for a stay near Waipio Valley. It's an easy walk to the Waipio Overlook. The rooms are simple, clean and affordable. Greg was super nice as were the other travelers. We enjoyed comparing notes and planing adventures with the other guests. The kitchen is well stocked, there are lots of guide books about the Big Island and the bed was very comfy. Mahalo Greg!

  • Reviewer: Jonas

Comments: My fiance and I had a great stay here last night. The common areas are very cozy and inviting, and had a lot of little extras that made it easy to feel at home. Things like tea, condiments and spices were plentiful. And of course everything was quite clean. Our room was very roomy and comfortable. The bed and the linens were super comfortable and high quality. We had to arrive late but Greg was really helpful and easygoing about it making it no problem at all. As an extra bonus there are a number of fruit trees on the yard which we were allowed to pick from. Oranges and tangerines were in season, but there were others as well that didn't have fruit this time of year. We even got help from the neighbors puppy!

Comments: Our stay at Greg's place was perfect! Greg and Harmony are kind-hearted and very friendly! The hostel is rustic and charming. You can hear frogs and birds all night long and you'll meet geckos and other creatures in the garden - very cool! Pick a fruit or cook a meal in their outdoor kitchen! We had a great time out there!

  • Reviewer: Friederike

Comments: My husband, infant daughter and I stayed with Greg and his family for one night only. They run a very sweet hostel in a fantastic location. Plus: We got a tour of all the fruit trees on the property by one of his children, very nice!

  • Reviewer: Andrea

Comments: Greg was a lovely host. He was very kind and very laid back regarding my arrival time. The space was quite nice for what you expect when you hear the word hostel, and I was pleasantly surprised by the bed. Of course it is more expensive than a regular hostel, so one should expect a few extras, but it was still a very nice stay, and conversations with his two young children were an added bonus for me :)

  • Reviewer: Julie

Comments: What a nice stay! We were given a yard tour by the cutest host ever (Greg's daughter) and received great tips regarding the closest beaches and restaurants. Great view on the ocean, cozy room and comfortable bed. Merci beaucoup!

  • Reviewer: Jonah

Comments: Greg was great! Very friendly and knowledgable about stuff to do in the area when our original plan fell through, but gave us space to enjoy the hostel by ourselves. Not a lot of frills, but that's the way we like it! Perfect for us young 20 somethings exploring the island.

  • Reviewer: Nadia

Comments: Nice hosts. Lots of amenities. Beautiful location.

  • Reviewer: Bonnie

Comments: Staying at greg's hostel was really nice. The place is great and cosy. Greg showed me the hostel and my room when I arrived, he was really nice and he really made an effort. The location is perfect for trips to waipio valley, it's just a 15 minute walk from the house to waipio lookout . I'd definitely stay there again.

  • Reviewer: Rick

Comments: Spent two weeks at this extraordinary hostel, and enjoyed every aspect. It was clean, Greg was a great, accommodating host (although he suffered a serious accident while I was there and thus was quite limited in his activities. That will be temporary and did not impact the great experiences I enjoyed there.). He recommended the Waipio Cookhouse nearby for meals, and that was a terrific bonus. Good, locally sourced simple foods and wonderful staff. But you have ample cooking facilities at the hostel if you prefer, and coqui frogs to serenade you in the evening. If you want a natural, peaceful, inexpensive place to see local Hawaii, including Waipio and nearby valleys of true magnificence, this is an unbeatable choice.

Comments: We found the Hostel easy with our GPS, also the hostel sign on the Mailbox was helpful ;) The room was prepared and and everything was clean and fine, we enjoyed the fresh eggs =) Greg came down to talk to us and was very helpful. Thanks again, Michael

Comments: When we arrived after hiking down into Waipio Valley, we were greeted by Greg and his family. It definitely made us feel at home. He then showed us to our room and the amenities that accompanied it. The outdoor kitchen was great for when we made dinner on our second night. The room was fantastic and would definitely stay here again if we return!

  • Reviewer: Margaret

Comments: Greg met us at the front door and showed us around the apt/property. He was very welcoming/nice and made sure we had anything we needed and offered to tell us more about the area and to talk to him if we had an questions later. The apartment was clean/nice and the bed was incredibly comfortable! The apt is o lookout. We walked, but you could easily drive there.

  • Reviewer: Susan

Comments: Harmony was very welcoming and answered all our questions about nearby Waipio Valley. We enjoyed the indoor outdoor cooking and eating area with the cool breeze and lovely view. The sitting areas was comfortable and filled with useful books. The shower was great with enough water pressure to wash my thick hair (and there was lovely shampoo and conditioner provided). Most importantly for me, the bed was great! Super comfy This place was recommended to me by a friend and I will certainly do the same.

  • Reviewer: Jelsa

Comments: Thank you very much for the spontaneous commitment :) your room was really cute and the rest of the hostel was absolutely lovely - the outside kitchen, the big bathroom and the cosy living room. We definitely recommend your hostel though we just came around for the introduction and and stayed for the few hours of sleep because of all the things to do on the Big Island ;)

  • Reviewer: Misha

Comments: Greg was wonderful! He heard us pulling in, and welcomed us into his hostel with open arms. We had a king size bed (which is my fiance's dream come true), a shower, kitchen and anything else one would need. We loved everything about this stay!

Comments: Great value! The room, booked at the last minute, was simple but clean and the bed extremely comfortable, our hosts were very nice, and even lent us a jacket when we needed one! We met cool people during our stay and ended up hiking with them :) perfect to explore the valley

Comments: Wai'pio hostel is located just five minutes walk from the Wai'pio valley lookout. The place is really idyllic, and we loved having breakfast and dinner in the outdoor kitchen area with a fantastic view of the ocean. The rooms were clean and shared a common bathroom and kitchen area with other guest rooms. Greg was a really nice host and made us feel comfortable. But the best part of staying there was the special fruit tree tour we got from his adorable daughter (with directions to the secret grapefruit and avocado trees in the neighborhood)! We loved this place and highly recommend it!

Comments: Greg & Family's hostel is the first AirBnB experience I've ever had. Before arriving to Greg & Family's hostel, I stayed in contact with him letting him know my estimated arrival to the hostel. He was kind enough to let me know that he wouldn't be on the property and that he wouldn't be able to greet me, which is totally fine! While arriving to his property was a bit tough without GPS (which people should set way before hitting Waipio valley), we were able to find it with the description he set on his itinerary. With that being said, expect no cellphone coverage out here! Greg has graciously offered wifi on his property for convenience. The hostel was lovely, and I really loved how convenient and close it was to the lookout! Although at night, I hear frogs and crickets pretty clearly outside of the hostel, so I would bring some earplugs with you if you don't regularly carry them. :) Thanks, Greg & Family!

Comments: greg was super kind and friendly. his place had a beautiful backyard and everything we needed was in the room. I would definitely recommend this to others :)

Comments: Nice little hostel with three rooms, common room, spacious bathroom and a nice seating area outside with the kitchen. Bit far away from everything, would be perfect to explore Waipi'u valley which is close. Thanks for the nice stay, Simone and Jan

Comments: The place was outstanding! We had a room with a king size bed. The common area was fantastic, great outdoor cooking facility. The water is so clean and tasty! The location is perfect - great to venture the north island. The hike to Waipio is great. The Waipio Cookhouse has AMAZING food. Beautiful place to kick back. Would stay there again in a heartbeat. Thanks Greg!

Comments: We stayed here for 1 night whilst on the Big Island as we wanted to check out Waipio Valley. The location was perfect for this. The room was clean and exactly as described. The bathroom was also clean and the shower had good water pressure. We arrived whilst Greg was out but there were instructions to let ourselves in - he came down to introduce himself later and was very friendly.

  • Reviewer: Larissa

Comments: Everything was just as mentioned, clean and quaint. The only thing that I would say is that starting around 6 am there was a little noise upstairs of little feet. :) Other than that, it was good!

  • Reviewer: Adnan

  • Reviewer: Bernd

Comments: we were there only for one night. Greg is absolutely nice, the rooms are not very new, but regarding the price absolutely okay.

  • Reviewer: Shane

Comments: This place was awesome! I wish I could've stayed longer, but the one night I did stay was VERY relaxing and cozy. It's close to the Waipio valley and the Waipio cookhouse is close too, which has great food. I would definitely recommend this spot to anyone wanting to explore the Waipio valley or just to have a relaxing time in Kukuihaele.

  • Reviewer: Evelyn & Robin

Comments: We enjoyed our stay a lot! There were fresh fruits and avocados in the garden which we could take and eat. Good information was provided and even guide books to read. Greg's family was super nice and helpful too! we felt very welcome and would stay there again. MAHALO! :)

  • Reviewer: Sjoerd

Comments: In general we had a great stay. I guess the kids running around upstairs can be a bit noisy, but they will go to bed before you anyway and it provides a nice home-atmosphere. Greg and Harmony are very nice and welcoming. The big avocado tree and macadamia's and other fruit trees are also pretty cool!

  • Reviewer: Christopher

Comments: Greg's hostel was beautiful. Super comfortable king size bed, breezy outdoor kitchen, massive avocados, farm fresh eggs. Thanks for having us!

Comments: Awesome place to stay if you are trying to stay as close as you can to Waipio Valley. There's a place right next to the hostel called The Smoke House and that's the best locally grown and organic food you'll ever eat! Best place to stay if you are looking for the best bang for your buck. You can't go wrong.

  • Reviewer: Oksanna

Comments: Had a great stay at Waipi'o hostel. It's a great location and charming old house and general set up for the hostel. Greg was super accommodating with our timing being a bit out of wack. Would highly recommend it!

Comments: Zimmer einfach aber fein, mit Tisch zum arbeiten und einem sehr bequemen Bett. Gemeinschaftsraum ist auch gemütlich. Hostel sehr nah am Waipi'o Valley

  • Reviewer: Sneha

Comments: The host was generous and offered us any fruit on the property, which included macadamia nuts and avocados. The room was clean and cozy. As a hostel there were three guest rooms sharing one bathroom- which worked just fine as everyone was on a different schedule. The host welcomed us but mostly left us alone, he let us know they lived upstairs if we were ever in need. They have 3 young kids and being upstairs you could hear foot steps. The area is nice but in the town many things were not open, I think we were there in the low season. But there is a fridge and all you need to cook most things.

  • Reviewer: Nathan

Comments: We really enjoyed staying at Greg's place. It's truly unique place and we'll highly recommend!

Comments: I had a wonderful time at Waipio Hostel, I didn't want to leave! Greg was an excellent host with clear directions and check in/out procedures. I settled in very easily in this quaint set up, appreciating every aspect of the property. I would most definitely stay here again!

  • Reviewer: Ruth

Comments: If you are hiking the muliwai trail or just looking for a fun and local experience, this is a great stay! It was clean and comfortable and the shared spaces allowed us to get to know a couple from Chicago staying next door. The outdoor kitchen is fun and it is so handy to have a full kitchen with all the cooking utensils for making meals and keeping costs down. Having a coffee maker is so nice in the mornings although there are only two mugs despite the plethora of other dishes. I saw no bugs inside the house area but the tree frogs sounded lovely at night. We stayed in the "kai" room and could hear the family overhead in the mornings and early evenings but not to the point of it waking us up or keeping us up. The clementines were in season while we were there as we're avocados so we ate really well. The check-out process was quick and easy. Highly recommend this place!

  • Reviewer: Valerie

Comments: Waipi'o Hostel was a great base camp to explore the Waipi'o Valley area! Greg was very helpful and welcoming. I would only recommend bringing some earplugs if you're not used to countryside noises at night.

  • Reviewer: Stephanie

Comments: The setting for Greg's home is so relaxing and beautiful. We were able to relax and also get out to enjoy the sites. Greg was very open and would have helped in anyway I feel if we asked. The space was what we had thought it would be. Had a feel of living in the Honokaa area, not just a visitor. We had the room with the king bed and it was very comfortable and clean. Rustic is the best way to describe the space. It was clean and had all that we needed and also the experience of living around others.

  • Reviewer: Amanda

Comments: The hostel is a really nice place and Greg is very friendly. A perfect place to stay to explore Waipio valley.

Comments: This hostel is exactly what we needed. Greg was super easy to communicate with and directions to the place/to get in were very clear. The bed was very comfortable and there were lots of great books to read :) The fresh fruit and coffee were also nice. The location was fantastic and very scenic. I would definitely recommend this place. Very much worth it!

  • Reviewer: Krista

Comments: Greg's hostel was perfect for a rustic stay following exploration of the amazing Waipi'o valley. The well equipped outdoor kitchen with view of ocean and fruit trees loaded with tangerines provided the makings for a lovely morning breakfast with fellow travelers. Bed very comfortable to cozy in and hear the night bird songs in this memorable corner of the Big Island.

  • Reviewer: Chris

Comments: Greg's place is better than described. It is clean, charming, and secure. The closeness to the Waipi'o Valley was outstanding. If we were booking again, we'd love to stay longer. Thanks so much Greg.

  • Reviewer: Christina

Comments: The hostel was a great place to stay for a solo traveler. Greg's place has a nice balance of community style living (shared bathroom, living room, kitchen) but with the option of some privacy with your own room. It was cozy, and I felt perfectly safe traveling there alone. Would totally stay there again!

  • Reviewer: Caroline

Comments: Greg and Harmony seem very sweet and the description of an older plantation home had me wondering about their rooms when I saw they were downstairs. Upon reviewing many, many reviews stating it was clean I booked a two night stay. There was so much dust in our room above and behind the blinds, in the closets, the lamps well everywhere and there was mold on the walls in the shower. These may not be issues to some but I coughed all night so that my niece finally went to sleep in the car. Greg issued us a $20 refund for the cleaning fee, I stated our objections and not wanting to bash them as people only the condition of our room which was hardly fair since we then had to find another room for the night and pay again. Anyway am writing as I said not to bash them as people but not wanting another to have the same experience either.

  • Reviewer: Al

Comments: If, like me, you stayed in lots of hostels in the 1970s, you'll love this place. Very nostalgic, with the best that those places had to offer. And Greg's place has a lot of nice upgrades. Highly recommended.

  • Reviewer: Davide

Comments: The place is as described and the rooms are actually quite nice for a hostel. The common areas have everything you need and it's very nice to get to know the other guests staying in the hostel. However all rooms are adjacent to the common area, which means you'll also hear the other guests if they stay up late. The garden is very nice with its fruit trees and sea views. Neighborhood is rural, lovely and peaceful: the real Hawaii as the host described it! At a stone throw from the waipio valley entrance.

  • Reviewer: Tom

Comments: This is a hostel is an old sugar plantation located nine miles off Hwy 19 so a car is necessary. It may seem "way out there" but you are actually very near Waipi'o Valley. The accommodations are simple but nice. The bedroom I had and the bed were very comfortable. The bathroom is rustic and simple. It's very quiet at night except for the roosters so light sleepers need earplugs.

Comments: This place was just what we needed. A beautiful setting near the edge of the world with a great restaurant around the corner and a quaint town down the road. Loved our stay here.

  • Reviewer: Mike

Comments: If you don't need it fancy but very adequate at a decent rate this is your pick. Have met some very interesting folks on both visits which adds to the ambience of this casual setting. Certainly a great pick if you want to explore Waipio or Waimanu.

  • Reviewer: Mary Ann

Comments: Edge of the world! This was a fun hostel - type stay. Shared a kitchen with other guests but it's such a small and cozy arrangement that it was really fun. Very close to the hike into Wiapio Valley (less than a mile down the road) and there is a nice little restaurant just across the way. Rooms are under the main house and you may hear a little noise from above but it's not bothersome. Beautiful older plantation house. Nice stay

  • Reviewer: Jordan

Comments: Greg's hostel was much needed to crash at after a long day traveling. Bed was big & soft, and we drifted off to sleep to the sounds of nature around us. The hostel was as described; had all the basics and their backyard was fantastic. You can't beat the proximity to the Waipio Valley lookout either. Thank you!

Comments: Best living experience in Big Island. We arrived late night but instructions were so clear we didn't have any trouble of finding the place. It is the perfect location if you're visiting the north part of the island. Greg and his wife are great hosts. Gave us plenty of info and tips about places to visit. Peaceful and quiet area, you'll rest as never before. Restaurants and cafes close around 8pm so if you're looking for a late dinner my suggestion is to plan earlier where to eat or buy grocer before and cook at the hostel. Mahalo, Davide & Ben

Comments: Great location if you want to explore the Waipio valley. The place has everything you need to cook (outside stove, fridge, toaster, microwave, grill, spices) and relax (indoor and outdoor). There were fresh eggs and fruit trees. Greg was flexible with our checkin time and very welcoming. Would definitely stay there again. Bring some mosquito repellent.

Comments: Great price, nice people, get to meet people -3 rooms with one communal living room and bathroom. If you are a light sleeper it's not for you. Directly underneath main house. You hear every foot step, you wake up at 6am when the blender goes or when the baby wakes up. No sleeping in here! Very close to Waipio.

  • Reviewer: Srikrishna

Comments: The stay was very satisfactory! It was very nice of Greg to answer my calls prior to the visit and had patiently answered all the questions I had about the Island. We checked in pretty late in the night, and they had still come down to check out on us and made us feel comfortable. We came to the Island for a backpacking trip to Waimanu Valley and Greg had let us park the car for a nominal fee in the premises. Otherwise we would have had to hunt for a space. Everything about this place is perfect, the setting, the location.

Be prepared for one bathroom shared with the other guests -- if someone is showering when you need to go, you need to wait! Cooking is outside, but under cover (we cooked in pouring rain). There were plenty of left-behind helpful things like spices and oil, and toiletries in the bathroom. The proximity to Waipi'o is great; there's not much else to do. We enjoyed picking tangerines and cracking fresh macadamias for breakfast.

Comments: This hostel was an easy choice in this rather remote location. Greg is a very kind, accommodating host and the place had plenty of unexpected amenities

Comments: What can't I say but views that leave you speechless. Up the road from Waipio valley. get a jeep and drive down it will be a trip in itself. Fresh eggs from the backyard. And a really good vibe. Slept like a baby.

Comments: A very nice room with a huge, soft bed. I really liked the big bathroom with the wooden floor and the outdoor kitchen area where you have a view of the ocean. Greg and his family were very welcoming and helpful. The hostel is really close to the Waipi'o valley. You'll need a car to get to the stores, but also you'll be staying at a very nice, calm and friendly place.

Comments: A really nice spot (very close to Waipio Valley) with welcoming & friendly hosts! The outside kitchen, the privacy and the room are great :) A charming house, we recommend this AirBnB! Just one thing, if you are very sensitive to any noise like me (no problem for my girlfriend), this charming old house (1922) may be too noisy.

Comments: Great stay! Greg and his family welcomed us with warmth and showed us to the hostel around back. It's nothing fancy, feels like a basement (because it is); but it's got a good shower and shared space, and a great outdoor kitchen overlooking the ocean and yard. The bed was super fluffy, clean and comfortable. We made eggs in the morning that came from their hens. Located a stones throw from the gorgeous waipio valley. We were glad to hang our hats here for the night after a day of exploring the valley! Thanks Greg!

Comments: I stayed at the Waipio Hostel for two nights, it was a late booking but Greg accommodated and checked me when I arrived. Room was spacious and the bed was very comfortable, good shower also. As the Room is essentially basement level noise is carried over easily through floorboards, but I sleep with ear plugs anyhow so was not a real issue. Everything was as listed and Greg was friendly and polite upon arrival. And the location is fantastic, Waipio valley short drive away, as is Honokaa for local shops etc. And the Restaurant the Smokehouse is just a short walk away, great food. Would definitely Recommend to others staying here. Mahalo :)

Comments: Great value. Easy check-in. Close to Honokaa and walk to Waipio Valley. Amazing star gazing at night. Amazing backyard with a great view of the ocean. A good way to live like a true Hawaiian. Also walking distance to this terrific farm-to-table restaurant called Waipio Cookhouse, which we visited 3 days in a row.

Comments: The stay in Greg and Harmony's home was wonderful. We really enjoyed the possibility to cook our own food since the outdoor kitchen is amazingly great equipped. The room was nice. We enjoyed the neighbourhood right next to Waipio Valley. Communication was perfect!

  • Reviewer: Benoit

Comments: Everything has been great. One thing is the poor noise isolation that make early mornings noisy when you have kids running upstairs. The place is beautiful, and close to waipio Valley.

Comments: I loved the outdoor kitchen with everything a hosteler could need and the living room area was warm and cozy with a great library. We were invited to pick the fresh fruit and macadamia nuts growing on the property and informed of a great place to eat nearby.

Comments: Greg's place was charming and very well set-up for travellers. We loved the well-equipped outdoor (covered) kitchen, and opportunity to forage fruits from the yard. Bedroom and common areas had nice character and bed was very comfy. Accessible to both sides of the island. Host was prompt with communication. Great stay. Mahalo!

Comments: I would definitely recommend Gregs accommodation. It's a short hike to Waipio Valley and the view from the house, overlooking the ocean is amazing. The kitchen is very well equipped with both kitchen tools, oil and spices. Bathroom was spacious and shower was very good(equipped with shampoo, conditioner and body wash!!). The room was perfect with a big bed and a small open closet. In the garden they have mac nuts, tangerines and avocados and we were allowed to take as much as we wanted! This was the perfect stay and Greg and his family was very welcoming :-)

Comments: The location is perfect if you're heading down into the Waipi'o Valley. And it's close to the Waipi'o Cookhouse which was an awesome place to eat! We stayed in the Kai Room and our bed was so comfy and nice, especially after a long day hiking! Greg was a wonderful host and shared some hiking tips with us for the valley that really came in handy. Also, the macadamia nuts and tangerines in the yard are wonderful!!! Remember that you're staying in someone's home and you can sometimes hear the kiddos. But it wasn't a big deal for us. The price is terrific, the location is great and the family is wonderful.

Comments: Gregs place is pretty much how other reviewers described it. The noise from upstairs is substantial. And it is a basement- there’s a pretty strong mildew smell and quite a few bugs. There is a usable kitchen though the fridge doesn’t seem to do much. On the other hand, the bedroom was reasonably clean and the bed was very comfortable. Greg is a very friendly, laidback, and accommodating host. And the location is great - very close to waipio valley.

Comments: Had some good conversations with other fellow travelers, ate some tangerines and macadamia nuts straight off the trees. Overall a very comfortable stay. Highly recommended.

Comments: Greg's house is very close to Waipio Valley (3 mins drive). We got here at night and Greg welcomed us and lead us to the guest apartments which located at the back of the house. Amenities are good and they has a country vide which I liked! And we were provided delicious breakfast made of home-grown potato. Overall a good place to stop by.

Comments: Totally recommend this place. A cozy and soothing place to stay, with it's outdoor kitchen and wind chimes. We were able to fix a dinner just with food left by other guests and there is free coffee and fruits from the garden. Yes, you do here that Greg and his family live just above, but it did not bother us at all. very close to Waipio Valley Lookout.

Comments: Greg's place is incredibly cozy and is a great location for exploring Waipi'o Valley and the surrounding areas. Check in was super easy and the bed was incredibly comfortable. Just a warning for those who need dead silence in which to sleep this may not be the location for you. His family does live upstairs and the ceiling doesn't insulate much of the noise, so you will hear the kids moving around upstairs fairly early in the morning. If you're generally up and about around 7am it shouldn't be much trouble for you at all. We enjoyed our stay here immensely even though it was only for a night. Thanks Greg!

Comments: This hostel was perfectly placed. The bed was so comfy and i sleeved so well here, falling asleep listening to the sounds of the island. The outdoor kitchen was great, I especially liked having breakfast looking out over the backyard. Thank you for having me, I really enjoyed my time!

Comments: Lovely hosts, very comfortable bed, great location. A bit too rustic for my taste, but perhaps in line with hostel expectations.

Comments: Waipio Hostel is a extremely cute and practical place to explore Pololu and Waipio from. We especially enjoyed our visit to the Hawaiian Vanilla company which is near by. Everything at this hostel is clean and the bed is very comfortable. Cooking in the outdoor kitchen might be the highlight of the trip for me. You will hear quite a bit of noise from above and the walls between the rooms are quite thin so we could hear the other guests. This hostel is reminiscent of camping for me since it is so open and airy. I would recommend this to others.

Comments: Greg will make you feel at home. He has a lot of knowledge about Hawaii and his local area. The location is wonderful for visiting Wiapi’o Valley. Make sure to purchase food and drink before heading out to Greg’s as there is little available once you get to Greg’s.

Comments: We had a great time at Greg's place. It is located only a few minutes away from the Waipio Valley which enabled us to check it at sunrise, hike up and down the slopes before coming back to the hostel to shower, rest and grab a bite. We were able to pick fresh avocados, breadfruits, tangerines, Macadamia nuts, etc. straight from the trees and eat them in the outdoor kitchen which was a great plus. The place was quiet, clean and homey. Wifi worked great too. We'll be back!

Comments: This is a wonderful place to base yourself for a visit Waipio Valley, a mere 5 min drive away! Greg was super accommodating with late arrival time, and after a day out and about, the warm shower and clean space was more than welcome. The town of Honokaa is about 20min away by car if you need to get food and other essentials.

Comments: Highlights: - Great and plentiful fruit in the yard. Also have a chance to try fresh macadamia nuts!! - Located in a beautiful, lush part of big island - Cosy room/ living room space Lowlights: - Bathroom is a zoo at nighttime! Wish we were warned about the many slugs and roaches - Lights out/dim in shared spaces at 9:30 (including the outdoor kitchen) and no way to turn them back up as they are set to a timer.

Comments: Greg was a kind host. He welcomed us and showed us around the place. He made sure we had everything we needed. We got to pick and eat fresh tangerines from the trees. Know that frogs and bugs are out at night.

Comments: Nice place, beautiful property, tasty tangerines. Enjoyed our short stay.

  • Reviewer: Annie

Comments: Lush and tranquil setting just minutes from the Waipio Valley lookout. Greg's place is nice for a quick stopover if you are hiking into the valley, but also works well if you want to spend a few days exploring the north side of the island. The rooms are comfortable and tidy and the outdoor kitchen is fully equipped. We did quite a bit of cooking and eating in. There were a ton of tangerines to pick and eat while we stayed. The place is cozy but a little quirky- it is in the basement of an old plantation house (the window in our room looked out at ground level.) If there is a full house, you may need to wait to use the toilet if someone is showering. There is a nice outdoor shower. Overall, a great budget option in a beautiful area with a very kind and knowledgeable host!
