Neighborhood Overview: We are 2 1/2 miles up from the ocean with a partial ocean view. A short drive to volcanic hot springs, the most recent lava flow, painted church, live music and dancing in Pahoa and also at Uncle Roberts Ava bar in scenic Kalapana, restaurants and shopping. We are close to 3 of the best farmers markets on the island, offering local produce, crafts, art, breakfast lunch or dinner, live music and a great chance to experience our local social scene. We are close to a black sand beach, an easy drive to Volcanoe National Park and Hilo. There is a popular local surfing, stand up paddle boarding and boogie boarding area near by, as well as excellent snorkeling options. We are close to Hawaii's largest retreat center which offers many classes and activities. There are many choices locally for yoga, massage and alternative healing modalities. This is a wonderful place to slow down, enjoy the island vibe, relax, get off the road and settle into your vacation.
Notes: We do have the local all night lullaby/serenade of tree frogs to be aware of and possibly pack earplugs if this is a concern. We often have rain showers. A flashlight can be very handy.
Transit: We are 2 and 1/2 miles from the local bus route. Having a rental car is your best transportation option here.
Access: You have full access to your room and 1/2 bath as well as shared kitchen/social room, full bath with shower, lawns, gardens, fruit trees and all the beauty of nature in this lush tropical setting. There is no wifi password needed.

House Rules: Check in time 4pm-7pm. $50 late check in fee after 8pm. Arriving during daylight is much easier! We are an off grid homestead and so are unable to use high power items such as a hair dryer. Our water is harvested from the rain and stored in cisterns and so it is important to only drink the filtered water we provide. Please make sure to clean up after yourself in all shared spaces. Please do not store or keep any food in your room. There is plenty of safe food storage in the kitchen in order to keep critters out of bedroom spaces. Thank you!

Comments: The sunrise room was gorgeous and exactly what my mom and I were looking for. Grandma Jean and Suki did a wonderful job at making us feel welcome why Julia was away. We had our own private little bathroom off of the room and an outdoor shower nearby the community kitchen. The stay was so nice the first night that we decided to stay again! The property is amazingly beautiful, and sacred. I felt very welcomed and was invited to come back any time! We stayed bug free in the sunrise room (which I know is hard to do in Hawaii!) and were very comfortable. We had fresh towels and toiletries provided. Thanks so much Julia!!

Comments: Julia was a helpful and gracious host. The cabin was comfortable and clean, the surroundings rustic and beautiful! If you like camping out with a comfortable bed, this is place is for you. I recommend arriving during daylight, as the roads are narrow and road signs are few.

Comments: Great place to stay, the cottage is private and the open communal kitchen is great. Would stay there again, just be sure to get directions before going.

Comments: Very lovely location and property we enjoyed the local wildlife very much. We were only able to meet Julia and her husband at the end of our stay but they seemed very pleasent and we're nice enough let us stay an extra night. The care takers they had were very welcoming and helpful as well telling us about the island and good places to visit. We hope to return again in the future!

Comments: The Sunrise Room is named appropriately. We caught beautiful sights in the morning and appreciated their little homestead. Harry and Julia were very friendly and helpful in providing information on local events throughout the weekend.

Comments: I've stayed here and there all over the islands for decades and this place is truly a rare little gem. A gorgeous spot tucked away in what is locally notorious for being one of the most beautiful jungled areas on island. The great Hosts, Julia and Harry, are very carefully developing the site for a few fortunate travelers to be able to experience Hawaiian living at its simple best. The 'Sunrise Room' is one of the sweetest places I've ever stayed in - clean and comfy and cute. In fact, the small colorful and creative touches built into this room, into the large open-air kitchen, and found around the rest of the grounds and facilities, make the whole place feel fun and delightful throughout. In my view the pictures don't even do it justice. There is a sense of complete remoteness here that is soothing to be in as well - a 'far off the beaten track' feel. And yet, it is really only 10 or 12 minutes away from everything -- swimming at the coast or a meal in town. Highly recommended!

Comments: Julia and her husband were an absolute charm. The property had a very cool rustic/island vibe and the surrounding area was gorgeous. We especially loved the view of the stars at night and watching the sunrise from bed. I would recommend to anyone looking to experience more of the island life (not the resort life).

Comments: Julia was friendly and welcoming. This is a great place for adventurous types who want to experience the back woods of Hawaii in a rustic but comfortable place. Wonderful to hear the sounds of the jungle and the sun coming right into your screened in window. Basic, simple, sweet.

Comments: Awesome place to stay way off the beaten path. It was so peaceful to go to sleep and awaken to the sound of frogs, crickets, and birds right outside the room. The room was neat, clean, and cozy. I also enjoyed checking out their off the grid systems for power and water. Way cool! Julia was a great host too!

Comments: Julia and Harry have created a lovely, peaceful spot in the jungle. If you want to get way off the beaten path, this is the spot for you. I loved watching the lizards hunt for bugs and the red-headed bird scavenge for crumbs. And then there's Soji, the dog, who loves belly rubs. This is a great place to get untethered from your cell phone as there is no service. (There is service a short drive away, however.) I took a yoga class at Kalani and would recommend a visit to Kalani for a class or to use the pool--there are beautiful grounds and a great vibe.

Comments: The sunrise room is basically a raised cottage with screening across the window openings. The furniture is old and tired and should be replaced. The half bath is down the stairs shown in the photo, and flashlights are furnished. This is an off the grid experience if you are ready for it. It wasn't bad, just that you need to know what to expect - an eco cottage off the grid in a rain forest with chirping frogs at night. The kitchen building is also open air and larger, and we had it to ourselves on our stay. WiFi was excellent and the outdoor shower was nice. Julia wasn't there and Jean furnished us some freshly ground coffee, which we appreciated in the morning. Bring food for your needs as Pahoa is a good 15 minute drive away.

Comments: My family had a great stay at the Sunrise room. Though Julia was out of town (her caretaker greeted us when we arrived), she reached out ahead of our visit with very clear directions - we were able to find the location even though we arrived after dark. The space was clean and Julia left water bottles and fresh towels for us to use. The Sunrise room is definitely off the grid - no cell service - but we liked the proximity to nature and falling asleep to the sounds of frogs. We had access to wifi, and Julia's super-friendly dog greeted us every time we returned. We noticed some mosquitos started coming out in the evenings (we visited mid-July) and suggest bringing bug spray for when you leave the cabin area. The Sunrise room was in a good location to see the current lava flows and visit nearby beaches and we would definitely return for our next visit to the Big Island!
