Neighborhood Overview: There is little reason to leave a 10-mile radius but Hilo is only 24 miles away, Volcanoes National Park 40 miles and the Mauna Kea Observatory, where you can view through telescopes, is 50 miles. Kona is 100 miles over the new saddle road making the connection to the other side in about 2 hours. Puna Rainforest Retreat is special because you can stay in a private place in a natural setting away from the busy neighborhoods and resorts but are still close enough to enjoy the attractions.

Notes: The 20 acre retreat is within the Puna Forest Reserve and our grounds are surrounded by rainforest that is part of the retreat. Hawaiian Natives own the non-private property within the reserve to protect the Native Ohia forest that is sacred to them. The reserve was acquired by the Trust for Public Lands and transferred to the Office of Hawaiian Affairs. The reserve is endangered species habitat for the Endangered Hawaiian Owl, Hawk, and Bat. While these species are otherwise very rare they are often seen at the retreat. Researchers continue to identify new species and there is ongoing collaboration to control invasives. The Ohia Forest has giant ferns, diverse species of orchids, epiphytic plants, strawberry guava, passion fruit, geckos, praying mantis and songbirds. The rainforest is very dense and so we ask guests to remain on the grounds for their safety unless we discuss the specific hazards. The retreat property surrounding the grounds feature many skylights into lava t

Transit: The retreat is centrally located with many attractions within a short distance. It is quiet and has no light pollution for unbelievable night skies. Neighboring properties include La’akea Permaculture Farm and rainforest. Opihakao Road, only 1 mile away, is a world-class skateboarding hill and one of the best downhills and climbs for road bikes on the island. Cycling is ideal here because of the short distances between attractions. Natural steam vents are close by and funky Pahoa is 4 miles away offering fantastic organic food and supplies leaving little reason to leave Puna. Pohiki Bay is 8 miles away and offer paddleboarding, surfing, body boarding, swimming and hot springs. Kalapana and the new Kaimu Black Sand Beach are about 7 miles away near Uncle Robert’s kava bar and Sunday farmers market. A recent addition to Kalapana is the UFO landing pad and star visitor sanctuary created by the Reinstated Kingdom of Hawaii.

Access: There is a gate to access our property and you will receive the gate code when you make your reservation. We value your privacy and don’t require interaction for check in or checkout unless you want to say hello or have questions. Caretakers live next door and we are available if needed. The property is very private and quiet. The only other folks you'll see are guests. Guests can use the BBQ and 1.2 mile rainforest trail around the 20 acre property. Guests are also invited to eat fruit from the orchard including lemon, lime, orange, grapefruit, banana, soursop, guava and avocado.

Comments: The stay was great. Directions to the property were very good, which is important as most flights from the Mainland arrive at night. The cabin was very clean and had everything we needed. The bed was very comfortable. They have done great job landscaping the grounds, which a very well maintained.

Comments: This lovely little cottage is in an amazing private setting just a few minutes from the town of Pahoa and the Puna coastline. This was just one of several colorful cottages on the property. We had everything we needed from comfy king and twin beds to beautiful views to coffee in the morning and night hours filled with the sounds of the jungle. A great find!

Comments: Jacklynn is the best organized & kind host ever. I haven't met her up or heard her voice(we just text msged) but im sure that she is very considerate. Her cottages are very new and the land is beautiful. You will have absolutely everything you'll need in the cottage. I really loved the kitty Oscar tooo i miss her already. She showed up everytime i call her name. Puna-Pahoa area's beach roads are also awesome. There's no reason not to choose Jacklynn's place again.

Comments: We really loved staying in the Lavender Orchid cottage. Jacklynn is truly a superhost, remotely running the picturesque property with multiple cottages. All her instructions were perfect, and her text responses were immediate whenever we had questions. This area of the big island is excellent for nature lovers, and it will wow you with sights and sounds of a tropical paradise. Jacklynn's cottages are near all the hot spots...including historical lava flows, black sand beaches, and beautiful ocean vistas. Our cottage was lovely...with a cute kitchen, super clean bathroom, great sitting area, and a super awesome king-sized bed. It was also well stocked with whatever you need...toiletries, kitchen utensils, etc. Our favorite part of the stay was listening to the frogs at night as we went to sleep. It really is the perfect place to relax after a full day exploring the island. Thanks Jacklynn!

Comments: Jacklynn was welcoming from the start with quick replies to all of our inquiries. Once we arrived, the Lavender Orchid little cottage was delightful with ample sized rooms, well furnished and nicely stocked for bathroom supplied, utensils and appliances in the kitchen and even biscotti waiting for us on the dining room table. This is a great place to get away about 10 miles from the nearest town, Pahoa, but still accessible to many things. The night sky is amazing with so little light pollution and the frogs singing at night is wonderful to fall asleep to.

Comments: This is a good place to go off-grid and enjoy the beauty of smells, sounds and sights of the tropical forest. The place is comfortable, best to book for a week stay to truly sink into the rythm. The bed was super comfortable, I slept like a baby. The property is guarded by a lovely cat that guides you through the sights :) Also, clean, quiet and good for couples to get away.

Comments: Located within the Puna Rainforest, the 'Rainforest Lavender Orchid' cottage was a real gem! Just outside the nearest town of Pāhoe, the cottage feels secluded and private. The stars at night are amazing!!! Everything you need for a comfortable stay, the bed is huge and super cosy! Great location for exploringVolcano NP/Mauna Kea/tide pools/ Hilo/Akaka and Rainbow Falls.

Comments: Our rental at this rainforest retreat exceeded our expectations. The cottage was lovely and the land was so beautiful. Jacklynn and Elijah are two very special people. They both took the time to make sure we were taken care of. We got a chance to share some story with them and they were kind to share what they knew about the island. We will soon be building our own little place here but this will be our new little home away from home.. see you soon! Much love from Joel and Vanessa!

Comments: We couldn't have picked a better place for a weekend getaway. The house was clean and had everything we needed. The bed was so comfortable and the hot shower at the end of the day was amazing. We loved that there was a small kitchen because I wanted to cook breakfast and dinner during our stay and it was perfect. We will be coming back for sure! Thank you so much!

Comments: If you're in the Pahoa area and want to stay in the rainforest I'd recommend this any day! Clean and spacious, loved listening to the frogs at night and a wonderful location if you wanna be close to the beautiful hawaii nature. We actually liked this place so much that we extended our stay with one more night! Recommend!

Comments: Oh Jacklynn!!!We so enjoyed our stay at the Rainforest Lavender Orchid! We were there for a week and it was just perfect! Your were so welcoming and made us felt at home right away. The sunrising from the bedroom is going to stay one of my good memories. I hope we could see each other someday in Alaska! Congratulations for this beautiful project!

Comments: Puna Rainforest Retreat and our cottage, Lavender Orchid, was beautiful. The cottage was clean when we arrived, with everything we needed for our stay. The king bed was very comfortable. Bathroom was great. Nature sounds are quite loud at night, which was a nice change from bustling city noises. There are a couple of small fans in the cottage, but enough breeze comes through the windows that they are hardly needed. The grounds were beautiful and everything was well maintained. It's a short drive to Pahoa town, where there are a few restaurants and other shops. There is a great little guide for ideas of things to do in the area, with directions to some great black sand beaches and tide pools. We had a great stay in this gorgeous retreat.

Comments: Staying at the Rainforest Retreat was a great experience. The cottage was very comfortable and had all the amenities we needed. We cooked most of our meals in the cottage. We also enjoyed meeting the visitors staying in their other Rainforest Cottages. Jacklynn and Elijah were friendly and helpful and gave us some good tips for sights to see and places to cycle. We also enjoyed the use of their swimming pool. Thank you Jacklynn and Elijah.

Comments: Effective communication. Extremely considerate host. The soaps and suds were high quality and Jacklynn left us freshly-picked fruit at the doorstep. Falling asleep with the song of rainforest birds was pleasant. Definitely recommended.

Comments: Had a great time at the Rainforest Lavender Orchid. It was cozy and had all the comforts that our family needed. The location was wonderful, in the middle of the rainforest and so remote and tranquil.

Comments: This is a beautiful spot, loved sleeping to the sounds of the rainforest. The owners were fabulous and super helpful and approachable.

Comments: It's a wonderful experience of staying in this place. Very clean and quite. No light pollution. Jacklynn was very considerate by putting a baby crib in the room even we didn't request. Will definitely recommend to everyone who is looking for a place to stay in puna area.

Comments: There were 4 adult family members in our party and we found the "studio" cottage to be quite comfortable. From there we explored as far south as Ka Ale South Point and as far north as Waipi'o Valley. Sitting on the deck watching the sun come up every morning was a great way to start each day. We highly recommend Mighty Sushi in Pahoa! It is the best sushi any of us ever had and is a small family owned business.

Comments: Rainforest Bliss If you're looking for tranquillity on the Big Island then this is the place to stay. We spent 5 nights in the Lavender Orchid cottage, which along with the grounds are beautifully maintained. The retreat is about 3 miles from the small but decidedly interesting town of Pahoa which has a fantastic whole food shop with a large range of food, fruits, veg and drink. The Volcano National Park is around 40 miles away and definitely worth visiting. The large area around the cottages contains two nature trails which are home to many rainforest flowers and creatures. At night (especially after a rain shower) you are seranaded by tree frogs. If you are venturing outside during the dark hours the view of the night sky is awesome. All in all this is an amazing place to stay!!

Comments: We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in the Rainforest Lavender Orchid! Jacklynn and her husband greeted us when we arrived and were lovely and very helpful. Their awesome cat (Oscar?) welcomed us as well whenever we pulled in and walked us to our door. The grounds of the retreat are well taken care of and the cottages are adorable, bright and extremely comfy (loved the king sized bed!) Pahoa is a artsy little town with little shops and great restaurants but far from touristy. Also, it's in a great location for smaller beaches, warm pools, Uncle Robert's Awa Bar and the Volcano National Park. I would definitely recommend a stay here!

Comments: Jacklynn's husband was out weed eating when we arrived. He was kind, welcoming, and has a great sense of humor. We felt welcome and at ease immediately. The cottage was beautifully done with high quality beds and a nice economy kitchen with everything we needed, including a nice little gas range, blender, etc. The bathroom is beautiful with a nice tub and shower and an on demand water heater provided lots of hot water.

Comments: I had a very relaxing week enjoying Pahoa and the scenic red road. The hosts were very friendly and very accommodating. I found my room to be well equipped and cozy. I had no problem cooking most of my meals here. I would stay here again.

  • Reviewer: Scott

Comments: A very quiet "neighborhood" because our only neighbors were the sounds of nature and occasional greetings when we encountered guests from the other three cabins. The grounds have a distant view of the ocean. The cabin complex is down a long curved private driveway through the jungle, so it can't be seen from the road. I forgot that there is a coded gate, so I had to hop the fence and walk down to find Jacklynn's husband to get the code. I'm a building contractor, so I was looking over the construction thoroughly, just out of curiosity. The cabins are in tip-top shape, with amenities we hadn't counted on, like a DVD player. We didn't use it, but it could have been handy on a rainy day. There were also some local guidebooks. We accidentally took a large Hawaii guidebook from our cabin, but we'll return it, probably today. It's a great base to explore this part of the island, but use your GPS to find the turn-off for Ala-ili Road if you come when it's dark. I missed the turn off when returning the first night after we had already checked in. I'm sorry we didn't stay longer so that I could have had an opportunity to meet both our hosts and learn about how their water and power systems work, as well as the local culture.

Comments: This was an amazing find.... We wouldn't stay any where else on the island. We cooked everyday....we bought a small rice cooker but other than that it was fully functional kitchen. The bathroom is great & there is lots of sun in the cottage. The king size bed is like sleeping on a cloud. The rainforest sounds at night are relaxing. The property is well kept. The hosts let you do your own thing. You don't have to do anything but drop your stuff off & go adventure. There is really no check out or check in which is great. It felt like our own little home away from home. Eco-friendly amazingness!

Comments: What a beautiful place to stay! It was very well maintained and clean! The property is gorgeous and even has it's own little hiking trail. Easy to find and even though it is about 30 miles south of Hilo-it is very easy drive to just about any place on the Island. There are several cottages, but still felt like we had plenty of privacy. I would highly recommend this vacation rental-the price, condition, location and hosts are amazing!!! I did a lot of research before renting it and now, more than ever, feel this is the best deal on the Island!

Comments: Very nice and private cottage. We enjoyed our stay even though it's a bit far from our activities. The only complaint is the bedding. It smelled like it was not washed from previous hosts.

Comments: We LOVED this cottage! Our favourite accommodation out of the 5 places we stayed while in Hawaii. So cute, comfortable, well appointed, and the bed: like sleeping on clouds! I wanted to smuggle it home with me. We cooked a lot of meals and found the kitchen well appointed - it's small but had everything we needed. The bathroom and kitchen share a sink which we didn't have a problem with. Smart use of space. It was cool and rained a lot in this area, which was actually nice and relaxing after long hot days hiking or sightseeing. We loved the coqui frogs at night! We hardly saw our hosts or other guests (when we did they were very friendly), but did make friends with the adorable cat. Even though I am allergic I could not resist patting it and then rushing to wash my hands! Thanks for having us in your slice of paradise :)

Comments: Stay here. It was an amazing experience. The cottage was tranquil and airy. The beds were super comfortable. It was a great mix between a home and a hotel because there was a kitchenette and a few DVDs but everything was immaculately clean. Even though it is in the middle of the forest, it is still a quick drive to Hilo and the volcanoes. Absolutely perfect!!

Comments: Wow, Wow, WOOOW!!! Jacklynn's property is seriously a gorgeous Rainforest retreat, exploring the surrounding towns & nature hikes was a very cool way to escape the touristy madness. Me and my family stayed in the Lavender cabin, it was comfortable, super clean with modern amenities and so cozy. We really enjoyed our stay on the Big Island, what an unforgettable experience!

Comments: cottage is perfect! Cozy, comfortable, very airy. Smart use of space. We loved the coqui frogs, even if we were scared that is going to be a problem to sleep with those "songs" We hardly saw our hosts or other guests, very private place. Even If I'm not big fan of cats, "Edward the Cat" as we named him, stole my heart. The most beautiful night sky I've ever seen!

Comments: The Lavender Orchid cottage was the perfect little isolated piece of heaven to get away from the hot Kona sun. Cutest yet of my Airbnb experience! The host included many books for a nice afternoon tea time reading while listening to the soothing rain drops. The place is clean and comfy. Don't forget to bring a pair of cozy socks or fuzzy pants as the night gets a bit chilly! Convenient way to check in/out. Great for people who prefers efficiency. I've already told my friends and they wish they've found this place first

Comments: The unit itself was terrific. Felt like being at home, not at all like a hotel, and it's great to have an individual cottage! Everything was clean and well kept. Jaclynn was very responsive to questions. The location is remote, but if that's what you're looking for, this is a great option! Also got a tour of the large 4 bedroom house. It's stunning.

Comments: Great location--close to beaches, nature, and all the necessities! The friendly cat that loves greeting people is a bonus:) Although we weren't able to meet Jaclynn in person as she's traveling, everything was arranged ahead for us and we felt very at home during our stay. Also enjoyed some delicious biscottis that the host left for us in the cottage. Would definitely recommend!

Comments: We absolutely enjoyed our three nights in the Puna rainforest. The cottage was very cozy and had everything we needed. It is located in a very quiet and peaceful area. If you want to see the lava and visit the volcano the location is perfect. It is also a nice location to just have a break and relax. There isn't an A/C but if you leave the windows open the breeze is more than enough. You'll even need the cozy, comfortable blanket on the bed to not get cold ;) Just don't forget your earplugs for all the frogs at night.

Comments: We stayed in the Lavender cottage . The property is about 30 minutes from Hilo. We were able to travel to the Lava flow and geothermal pools during our stay. The cottage was cosy: a master bedroom , a second bedroom, a bathroom and a small kitchen. The bed in the master bedroom was big and very comfortable. The kitchen has a stove, and a small fridge, but no microwave. The only sink for the cottage is in the bathroom. We were provided with plenty of towels, shampoo and cleaning supplies. The environment at night is like being in the midst of a jungle: tree frogs croaking and starry skies (when clear) There were many different trees that were in the property: avocado, banana and citrus. Our host was awesome- making sure that we were comfortable Our "Butler", Oscar, made sure we were welcomed when we came late at night. Thank you for a wonderful stay.

Comments: As a first time Air BnB user, we were very skeptical of what we would find; however, we were delightfully surprised. The cottage was clean and exactly as represented in the photos, aside from the lines, which they obviously need to change after each guest. There were four in our party, 2 adults, 2 children (15 & 10) and we fit comfortably in the cottage. My husband and I had our own space, and was able to relax and enjoy peaceful moments on the lanai, while our kids hung out in the living/dining area. It was great to be able to cook breakfast and dinner in the cottage. Hawaii can get expensive. There were more than enough kitchen supplies to make cooking easy. Make sure you check the cabinets for seasonings, oil, etc. before you hit the grocery store. There may already be some essential items there. We communicated with Jacklynn via e-mail. There was really no reason to meet with her. All of our needs were met and we had all the necessities we needed. When ever I did email her to ask questions, she was quick on replies. The location was perfect for us. Our goal was to explore the eastern side of the big island and the Pahoa area turned out to be a perfect home base. We were a hour from the volcano and Waimea. We found it hard to adjust to the speed limit in Hawaii. You definitely have to have an island life mindset. No speeding, no tailgating... etc. :) I want to thank Jacklynn for sharing her incredible property with us. We had a wonderful, memorable time at the cottage. My kids loved Oscar the cat (now they insist we get a cat). It's an experience I recommend for everyone .. listen to the sounds of nature, appreciate the moment, and just relish in the peacefulness of the retreat. Because during the day, you will be wearing yourself out hiking, snorkeling, zip-lining, etc.. The cottage was our calming sanctuary. We will definitely return when we get a chance.

Comments: Jacklynn's Lavender cottage is perfect! The property looked just as described. We were very pleased with how close it was to everything we needed for our trip. About 15 mins to Kalapana to see the lava and 10 minutes to Pahoa village to get something to eat. She communicated with me very easily too. I would definitely recommend this place, especially if you're going to the Big Island to view the lava. We got amazing video! Thanks again Jacklynn!

Comments: My boyfriend and I had no problem finding the property out of Pahoa for the Hilo airport. The cottage is on a huge property out in the rain forest. We had a wonderful stay in the lavender cottage. Pros: Staying here will make you feel really feel like you living with the locals for your stay. There are also beautiful landscapes and views for sunrises and sunsets. The cottage is fully equipped with shampoo, soaps, towels, and other house hold items. Also, it's pretty close to Volcanoes National Park. Cons: because it is a bit secluded from town, it can be a bit daunting to go out for dinner because it 30 min from Hilo. And there aren't that many places to choose to eat from. Also, you will have neighbors. If you want to be completely alone, this isn't the place for you. Also there is no air conditioning, but that is the majority of places on the island. But we had wet clothes to dry that never dried. Overall, I did enjoy my stay here and I would stay a here again.

Comments: We loved our stay here! The lavender cottage was clean & comfortable & very peaceful. The king bed was very comfy & so was the slide out in the living room. The little kitchenette & mini fridge were adequate for our 2 night stay ( we had a cooler for beverages) & prepared 2 breakfasts & a supper, and took advantage of the cooking on the nice grill outside. The grounds are beautiful & the nature trail is a bonus! The location is convenient for exploring the Puna area. A big mahalo for creating such a lovely environment! We hope to return someday!

Comments: Very nice and quiet cottage. There are a few other cottages on the same property right by each other, all look very cute. The place is very secluded and pitch dark at night without lights. We slept very well. The wifi connection was slow but it wasn't unexpected at a tucked away location.

Comments: Jacklynn has been an amazing host! Great communicant, Jacklynn has been answering all of our questions prior to arrival and offered to place a crib for our little girl even before we asked for it! We were greeted on site by a warm welcome. The House is super clean, looks brand new, right in the heart of a tropical forest! You will hear at night the tropical birds singing as if you were all alone in the forest, no exaggeration and truly amazing. The property offers an unbelievable private hike over 1 mile long in the tropical forest, the lava flow trail is a few minutes down the road where you can rent a bike and sea the lava going wildly into the ocean, and Volcano National Park is about 40 minute drive from the House. There is a grocery shop 10 minutes from the House where you will find everything you need. We truly had a great experience being Jacklynn’s Guests and highly recommend this place to stay.

Comments: It s a really nice and cozy cottage. The main bed is really big and comfortable. Really nice environment if u want a peaceful place to stay. Birds sing all the time. I used (Hidden by Airbnb) map to locate the cottage, it was easy to find. It s really close to the volcano viewing, also not far from volcano national park and Mauna Kea. Enjoyed this place very much !

Comments: This was an absolutely beautiful and spacious cottage in a beautiful area. The instructions and communication were professional and easy. We had no problems during our stay. Although this was somewhat off the beaten path, it was a central location to explore all of the island, we just chose a different direction each day! Loved being in the rainforest, and loved the flexibility of the cottage for a couple or for a family. Very clean, and the bed was oh so comfortable! Friendly and courteous guests in the other cottages as well!

Comments: My son made all the reservations for our trip to the Big Island and I knew he would find us a nice place, but further than that I had no expectations. When we came to the end of the small road leading to the cabins I thought we had arrived in an enchanted village! There before us was a rainbow collection of beautiful little cottages – yellow, blue, green, lavender and even a bright red utility cottage. They are spaced generously apart so as to provide privacy, on a huge grassy lawn, each differing a bit in size and floor plan. The lush tropical landscaping, much of it just the jungle fighting to take over was lovely and relaxing. The interior of our cabin was overwhelmingly spacious and gracious and immaculate. The bedrooms were so comfortable and offered such magnificent views that I didn’t mind at all when my energetic son occasionally took off for a tour, leaving me to lounge in luxury. Every detail was just what we needed – the small but efficient kitchen provided everything we needed. To top it off, the place had an irresistible resident cat, Oscar. My only disappointment in our entire stay was that Oscar politely declined the chicken I offered him. I guess Puna Rainforest Retreat provides him everything he needs, just as it did for us. My only reservation in writing this is that I fear it will encourage the rest of the world to swarm to this idyllic place, making our inevitable return difficult.

Comments: We stayed 8 nights at the Lavender Orchid Cottage and truly did not want our stay to end. The entire property is a well cared for Oasis from the world and if you are looking for a private and quite retreat from the hustle and bustle then this is the place for you. The cottages are nicely spaced and you won't hear your neighbors. You should probably plan on arriving before the sun goes down as the road may be hard to see, but once you get to the gate, the access is easy and the parking is color coded for each cottage. There is a lovely trail around the property that we enjoyed hiking. We didn't use the pool, but it looked nice and we did see others enjoying it. The Lavender Cottage was better than pictured and contained everything that we needed. The kitchen is small, but has a stove, pots & pans for cooking and a small fridge/freezer that fit our stay perfectly. There is only one sink, in the bathroom, but it didn't cause a problem as it had been designed very nicely. The bed is as everyone else before use described, very soft and comfortable - with the night breezes we slept the entire trip. The frogs are loud so either turn on the fans or bring ear plugs. The cottage is in a great location - there is Malama Market (grocery store) down the street (and drug store) that has everything we needed, or Hilo is just a short drive if you want Safeway, Target, etc. We ate dinner one night at Kaelo's Bar & Grill in Pahoa - it has great food and drinks (you may want to make a reservation because it's always pretty busy). If you get a chance visit the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden ($15 to get in but well worth it). Afterwards you are just a short drive to Whats Shakin' a fabulous place to get real fresh frozen fruit drinks and lunch. These are both on Old Mamalahoa Highway in Pepeekeo just outside of Hilo off Highway 19 (4 mile scenic route).

Comments: I would recommend staying in this place! It is peaceful, comfortable, clean. Check-in and check-out were easy. The immediate area is beautiful-- sunrises over the ocean every day! And you are so close to lava flows, beaches and good food in this part of the island.

Comments: My husband and I stayed for 10 days to celebrate our honeymoon. The amenities were perfect and so comfortable. The stargazing was amazing, and the location was great, close to Hilo and Volcano, but Pahoa is a fun town to explore too. I would recommend this place to anyone that wants a beautiful place to call home while on the island. It was absolutely perfect!

Comments: Jacklynn's place is an incredible, secluded getaway. Take some time to soak in the beauty of their Pahoa forest retreat. There is a nice trail around the property and star gazing from the lanai is not to be missed. The cottage was comfortable, well kept, and well stocked. Kudos to Jacklynn's decorative taste--the cottage was notably adorable (including the landscaping). The cottage retreat was an unforgettable one for us and we can't wait to make it back!

Comments: If AirBnB would offer a 6th star, this place would get it from us. We stayed a week with Jacklynn in the Lavender Cottage, and enjoyed the place very much. It's quiet and beautiful, neat and practical, with a groomed garden surrounded by a wild forest of many species of flowering trees and plants, with birds to sing to us all day, and coqui frogs to lull us to sleep at night. It was so easy to relax ourselves. The only regret: We should have stayed even longer! Centrally located near Pahoa, tide pools, and of course the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park (which alone is worth visiting for several days), we can only recommend to all Big Island travellers to choose one of Jacklynn's cottages as basecamp for excursions.

Comments: Unique place and much different than your typical Hawaii rental. Very secluded out in the rainforest. Was a perfect way to slow down after an action packed trip. Wifi was in and out but that helped us unplug. Lots of stuff to see in a 10mi radius. Bring your snorkel gear for the tide pools.

Comments: What a fantastic, gorgeous slice of the rainforest this is! The Lavender cottage has just the right amount of what you need to be comfortable in an area that is a bit remote. Do be prepared to venture out for sightseeing/activity spots, as the Big Island certainly lives up to its name! Jacklynn was great to communicate with and the on-site/nearby support team were happy to assist with any additional needs. Comments: Beautiful cottage, quiet, clean. Check in is pretty smooth, communication is effective. The full kitchen is wonderful. What need to mention are there is no microwave in the cottage and wifi is backhauled by satellite, which is not stable. However, these are not problems for us, we enjoyed the stay really much. Absolutely will stay here next time.

Comments: The cottage has a unique location in the middle of the jungle. You also positively get in touch with the nature. The rooms are efficiently protected via insects and functionally equipped. The internet is very unstable which can be annoying if you need WiFi for your trip (e.g. booking trips, searching for restaurants). Breakdowns for hours are not unusual. The overall cleanness of our room was good but partly improvable (e.g. bedsheets and silverware). We do not expect the latter to be a comprehensive problem and would recommend the accommodation.

Comments: Jacklynn's set of cabins is beautiful and serene. We stayed in the Lavender Cottage and it had everything we needed. It is in a very secluded area which meant it took an hour to drive to Volcanoes National Park which was longer than we planned but that was our fault, not hers. We also failed to plan for our breakfast, but luckily we went to Pele's Kitchen in nearby Pahoa which was awesome!! I would recommend staying more than one night if you can!

Jacklynn was very helpful and provided all the details we needed to check in the middle of the night. The cottage is really nice and well equipped and super clean. The only visitors were the cute cat and some geckos. We were only two persons but I think it fits four people easily as well. Comments: This is really an absolutely perfect location for traveling around the south side of Hawaii Island, within a short drive of Volcano NP, and tide pools, beaches and all of the unique flora of the Pahoa area; plus Pahoa town is a short 5 minute drive where there's food and drink and plenty of shopping opportunities. The cabins are clean, new, well equipped and provide a restful and quiet location for sleeping "under the stars".

Comments: Nice and cute tiny house far away from roads, traffic and noise. Easy check-in and good communication. The living room has two extra beds. Be aware that the ones staying in the master bedroom always need to go through the living room if they want to go to the bathroom or to the kitchen. So it is a nice place but I recommend this place for 2 people or a small family only.

Comments: A nice private space with fruit trees and beautiful space. Highly recommend that you take a walk and pick the ripe fruits - they are delicious. The shower is great and the bed is really very very comfortable. You wake up to the sun peeking through your bedroom, and you can do star gazing at night. Lava viewing is only about 15 drive away, and hippy Pahoa is only less than 10 min drive away where you can get your supplies, have coffee and food. Tips - If you need your wifi to stream movies and be connected all the time, this is probably not the place for you. The wifi is spotty and limited (was disconnected even though had rebooted the device a few times). The shared sink for the kitchen and toilet is interesting and needs some getting used to, do read the listing description as it has given great details. We knew about the set up and thought it was no big deal, but still felt kinda of inconvenienced and bothered about food and human waste sharing the same space. That could be just us.

Comments: Jacklynn's place is a great place to escape and experience nature. This house is a retreat cabin style unit next to a few others just like it and they make up a rainbow color. You can see a beautiful sunrise- when we went in December, I think the fruits are not ripe yet but the landscape around the house is like you are walking through a well groomed forest. There is a small kitchen and fridge but no microwave and the internet and cell service is not super reliable which could be a pro/ con depending on what you want. In our case, we needed directions to go to volcano national park so we just drive out of her property toward Pahoa until we found service again to get the directions. I think it rains here very often but fortunately during our stay we didn't get rained on!

Comments: This is literally close as you can stay to the currently active fissure (fissure 8). If you want to experience the beating heart of the Lower Puna eruption, this is *the* place to stay. At the time of this writing, there is no legal area from which to view the lava directly, but there may be one soon. Despite its proximity to the active fissure, it's totally safe. We came with our baby daughter. Air quality was good thanks to the trade winds, and most of the truly noxious stuff gets generated at the ocean entry point (and then blown off to the west along the coast). Furthermore, Jacklynn has a sulfur dioxide detector, which has shown safe levels the entire time, but the cottage also has an air purifier if you’re still worried. Even if you can’t see the lava directly, being less than 3 miles from the fissure is incredible. The volcano is continuously generating its own clouds which reflect the bright light of the lava back down to the ground, causing a wide swath of the sky to be filled with an eerie red glow. After baby bedtime, my wife and I sat out on the patio and just stared at the shifting crimson clouds for almost an hour. The coqui frogs make it pretty hard to hear the eruption itself, though occasionally we caught little sounds that may have been lava sloshing in the distance. On the retreat property, there are also (as of this writing) a number of steam vents where hot steam is constantly billowing out of cracks in the ground. These are all downwind of the cottages, so their slightly sulfurous odor won’t affect you unless you go exploring. Another cool thing: At least when we were there, the entire area from Pahoa down to the retreat had a unique smell that is hard to describe. It’s more sweet than sulfurous, and I miss it now that we’ve left. An alternate place to stay would be somewhere in Nanawele estates. You’ll probably get a broader swath of red sky from Nanawele. However, I still think Jacklynn’s place is better: the view from the cottage balcony is amazing, and Jacklynn is a great resource for tips on exploring the area if she’s around.

Comments: We rented out the entire estate for the week and all our families/friends dispersed among the cabins/main house. My husband & I rented out the Lavender cabin for his family and we stayed in the green one. This property is breathtaking and such a special place to stay and visit. The rainforest surrounds you and it feels like you are far away from all worries, there is so much natural beauty to experience here. One of my many favorite perks was the outdoor tub full of rainwater that is heated by the volcanic steam vents, it's like a nature jacuzzi. The private walking trail is a must, we even walked it at nighttime with a big group of us. There are wild pigs that occasionally pop up, butterflies, moths, and the coqui frogs are always singing at night. The stars sparkle and shine so bright here and they blanket the night sky for miles. I did not want to leave and all of the guests in our group felt the same way. Jacklynn and her family were so accommodating as well, a huge thanks to them for allowing people to use this beautiful space.

Cell reception is limited, and I had a bit of trouble with the wifi, but this is a space to unplug, and I was grateful for every moment from the rain and frog sounds to the beautiful and magical volcano energy that is saturated in this wonderful space.

Comments: What a unique experience! Cottages were quaint, well taken care of, and had everything we needed. The property offers a once in a lifetime experience, with the vents from the volcano and the hot tub and bath that were heated naturally. Elijah was a wealth of information, but only if desired, and Jacqueline was so welcoming! We would not hesitate to stay here again.
