Neighborhood Overview:

Notes: Please take note: Hawaii charges a 10.25% Transient Accommodation Tax as well as 4.166% GE Tax on all short-term rentals. The taxes will need to be paid prior to or upon arrival as Airbnb does not collect them for the state of Hawaii.

Transit: The public transportation is poor here. The bus only loops the island on the main highway once or twice a day, so having a car is pretty essential for exploring and getting to the farm. Hitchhiking is not uncommon, but not ideal for reaching less traveled spots and getting about in a timely fashion, so we don't recommend it as your sole means of transportation.

Access: If you enjoy animals you will love hanging out with our milking goats, sheep, ducks, and chickens, as well as our two loving dogs and cats. You are more then welcome to walk around the farm and explore the abundance of tropical farm living. Please remember this is a working farm so there will be farm noises (i.e. roosters in the morning) and activity around.

Interaction: We are more then happy to interact with guests and provide recommendations and answer questions. We are also happy to give you your space if you wish.

House Rules: SUSTAINABLE LIVING & AWARENESS We ask that you are aware of the resources used while on the farm and encourage the use of organic, non-toxic and biodegradeable products. QUIET HOURS: 10:00PM-8AM We ask that you please keep the noise before 8am and after 10:00pm to a minimum. KITCHEN USE If you are not renting the entire house the kitchen may be shared with other guests staying with us, so please be respectful of this space. SMOKING Cigarette smoking is discouraged on the farm. LIABILITY The farm will not be held responsible for any injury or loss, resulting on the land to you. If you get injured you must have insurance, and pay for any medical and other costs involved. Everyone should be careful and act safely. Again, if you are injured, it will be your sole responsibility medically and financially.

Comments: My Girlfriend and I had a wonderful visit. Steve and the others where wonderful hosts and the house and farm was beautiful... fresh fruits, nuts, veggies, and goat cheese... hard to beat. Along with the beautiful view and the amazing outdoor shower.

Comments: The farm was AMAZING! We had such a great time. Steve and the interns were so welcoming and made us feel right at home. We had the opportunity to learn about sustainable agriculture/ farming and help out with the animals. The house was beautiful... especially the outdoor shower! Thank you so much, we can't wait to come back.

Comments: We LOVED Steve's place. Steve's crew were so nice and inviting and super helpful with Island info. His place is in a very cool area, with the best coffee shop down the road. You are central to lots of attractions; Place of Refuge, Two Step (snorkel beach), Captain Cook Monument and the Ethnobotanical Gardens. And the best burgers at Annie's. The goats, chickens, ducks, cats and dogs were lovely and all the fruit was a bonus! The outdoor shower is amazing at night to see the stars! Thanks Steve!

Comments: We were planning a trip to hawaii to purchase a sustainable farm. Our first choice was Worldmark who we are members, lucky for us they were booked. Steve and his staff were friendly, and attentive without being to attentive which allowed us privacy and the enjoyment of soaking in all the place had to offer. The farm animals provide plenty of entertainment and the ducks will quack you up with their antics. and were a pleasure to watch. Sipping fresh Kona coffee on the lanai in the morning while looing at the panoramic coastline view....WOW!.

Comments: The host was gracious and interesting. The farm was as advertised. It was nearly impossible to sleep the first 2 nights as the coqui frogs were deafening. Once exhaustion set in you get used to them you can get to sleep...until 4:30 when the 200 roosters start crowing. It is a matter of conditioning...city dwellers never hear the endless traffic or the sirens and country folk never hear the (Website hidden by Airbnb) I only mention it as a word to the wise. Otherwise not a bad experience. Loved the variety of fruits available.

The hosts were open to sharing informaton and time, aswell as their great energy! The interns were also a real joy to meet! The animals, always special. The sheep mama had two babies during my stay, Awesome!! I had wished I had more time to spend there and learn, next time. I highly recommend the experience! Love and Light to that place! Steve, Melinda, and the farm interns were very welcoming. We enjoyed their hospitality and conversations. Our recommendations: Eat a farm fresh meal or two-You won't be disappointed. Shower outside-Well, it's just cool! Sleep on the lanai, if you get the chance. Visit with your hosts-They're great people. Thanks for a fabulous time! Jamie & Mercedes Helena, MT

Comments: We got to the farm at night, which was a tiny bit tricky to find in the dark, but no big deal. Our hosts graciously greeted us. We spent two nights there. Most of our days were spent at the beach, but the farm was a beautiful place to come home to and to wake up in the morning. And especially with tasty coffee, fresh eggs and a view. Plus, there are tons of cute animals to cuddle with and pet--Leilani the pup, various cats, goats, sheep and baby bunnies!

Comments: We had a perfect time at the luxurious farm. Steve and Melinda are awesome and the community they had between the farm help and the other guests was awesome. Our room was clean and the lanai is dreamy. I loved falling asleep to the frogs and showering outside in the amazing shower. I cannot wait to return again and wish I could have stayed a few more days.Thank you both so much!!

Comments: very well kept home and such peaceful, zen-like environment. i really felt relaxed and slept so well during my stay there. there's a great vibe about the place and was centrally located - easy to get to various diving/snorkeling locations including captain cook, the famous kona, and down south or to the volcano. steve and melinda were very helpful and hospitable and made really delicious and healthy food. this is different from other vacation rentals because they are actually sharing their home with us, and we enjoyed every bit of it.

Comments: I had the time of my life on this farm! Steve and Melinda are two of the most kind and considerate people I've met on the Big Island and I will always remember my time with them as one of the best experiences ever. Their home is beautiful and the animals are all amazing!!! Thank you both, again, for a fabulous time !!! I'll never forget you :o)

Comments: The hosts are gracious, considerate and knowledgeable. The inspirational and very well maintained farm is in a stunningly beautiful location with close access to superb snorkeling. We loved it!

Comments: What an amazing place, a true little paradise. The house, the view, the hosts, the neighbors, the fruits, the vegetation, the smell and sounds, the pets, the outdoor shower, the nearby snorkeling and beaches made this a wonderful and memorable stay. Steve and Melinda are the best hosts imaginable and made us feel most welcome. If all that is not enough, their home also features the most comfortable bed in northern america! we know because we've tested them all :-)

  • Reviewer: Rob

Comments: Even without my own transportation I had a great time at the farm. Steve & Melinda were helpful and accommodating all the time. If you want to get away from the tourists & be surrounded by nature it's the ideal place!

  • Reviewer: Susan

Comments: Steve and Melinda's home was just the experience and setting we were looking for in Captain Cook! They were very gracious hosts and wonderful to get to know. The house was very comfortable and the view of Captain Cook really could not be better than from the big lanai. Lani, the dog, identified us as friends after meeting us once and made us feel like we belonged there and the cats helped us to miss our own kitties less. There are animals everywhere (but not in the house) and if you stay there, you will feel you are truly in the heart of a real farm. We had a wonderful breakfast one morning and generally enjoyed everything about our 4 day stay. We will happily stay with them again when we return to the Big Island!

Comments: Steve and Melinda were gracious, friendly, excellent hosts! Not only are they wonderful people, but their farm is a beautiful place to spend time while you're around Kona. One note - make sure to get clear directions in advance, because (Hidden by Airbnb) maps misses their address by several miles. It's not hard to find once you know where to look!

Comments: Steve and Melissa have created a truly amazing place to stay on their huge farm. We were stunned by the view & all the fruits and animals on the farm. Everything was very tidy, clean and neat. They made us feel very welcome and their instructions of how to get there were easy to follow. At night we were serenaded to sleep in our beautifully furnished room by hundreds of chirping tree frogs. A memorable stay.

Comments: Beautiful location! Unique experience! Steve & Melinda were as gracious as can be. Excellent advice on where to go and what to do! Farm breakfast was delicious! Only wish we could have stayed longer! Have recommended to friends and would definitely stay again.

Comments: Melinda was an absolutely perfect host: warm, welcoming and full of radiant energy. She felt like an old friend the minute we walked in the door and made us feel perfectly at home on her and steve's beautiful farm. The room and outdoor shower were heavenly...perhaps the best shower I've ever had!

Comments: My wife and I spent 3 days at the farm and we loved it. We would have stayed more if it had been possible but there was no more availability. The place is exactly as described in the airbnb ad: no bad surprise. Actually everything was better than we had expected. The property is big and well located, with incredible views over the ocean. Every room is furnished and decorated with style, in a kind of oriental way. Steve showed us the farm around and was just wonderful. Actually everybody on the farm was great and we became friends very fast. Gabriela and Matias prepared us the best breakfast with products of the farm. We also loved the contact with the animals, Lani the dog, the cats and others. We also loved the huge outdoor shower. Now we are back in Europe still very jetlagged. I don't know if my head is clear enough to really describe how nice it was.

Comments: Life-charging opportunity to reset and recharge the soul. My stay was a stay in Paradise, to say the least. Great people to be around who received me with the most loving heart. The food at the farm is deliciously organic, the animals extremely docile, and the learning experience in doing the chores around the farm as well as learning more about Sustainable Farming were all some of the highlights of this Retreat! I had no idea my mind, body and spirit would be this much nourished. I called this trip a Rebirth. Thank you for the opportunity to be ONE with Honaunau Farm.

Comments: This was already our second stay at Steve and Melinda´s farm, this time we came with my parents. Unfortunatly we didn´t meet them during our stay since they were in holiday themself. But their helpers gave us a warm welcoming and helped us whenever we needed something. We enjoyed our stay at the farm again very much. We like the atmosphere and their lifestyle. If you order, they prepare a super delicous, fresh and healthy breakfast and although it`s a bit pricy it´s totally worth it. Aloha Ozzy & Chantal

Comments: The sustainable farm by Steve and Melinda was an awesome place to stay on the Big Island. The place was beautiful and very comfortable. Their friends were awesome to even invite us for New Year partying around a camp fire.

Comments: We had a wonderful time at the organic farm. The location is excellent, close to great snorkeling places, eating (be sure to check out the coffee shack) and with a spectacular view from the veranda aka lani. The house is beautiful, spotlessly clean and our room with a private bathroom just across the hall had a very comfortable bed, close and everything we needed. The farm itself is a wonderful place, with lots of different animals, from chicken, roosters and ducks to little baby goats that were just born the night we arrived. The owners were on vacation over the holidays and the argentinian couple that worked as organic farming volunteers on the farm showed us around and they were just amazingly friendly and helpful, mahalo Gabs. Both thumbs up for this oasis on The Big Island of Hawai'i

Comments: Steve and Melinda have a beautiful and luscious farm that they have graciously shared with guests. The house is very nice and big and quiet, with dramatic paranomic view of Kona coast. You just get lost in the nature and the sunset. Walking around the farm, we saw adorable animals and lots of fruit trees. We could easily find lilikoi falling from the trees that taste delicious. Everyone in the farm was very nice and friendly. We highly recommend this place to everyone exploring the Kona coast.

Comments: My husband and I stayed at this gorgeous farm on the southwestern side of the Big Island. We were there for a combination honeymoon + friends' wedding trip. We are so glad that instead of staying at a hotel or a resort, we decided to stay at Steve and Melinda's. We stayed in the smaller guest room with the shared bathroom. We loved that from our window we could see the flowers and plants behind us, the animals on the farm, and a bit of the coast. It also felt very private even though we were in the main house at the same time as another (wonderful) couple. Some our favorite moments were feeding the baby goats, having dinners with the other awesome couples, and eating breakfast on the veranda/patio. None of the hotels' ocean view rooms can compare to the ocean views we had, while feeling like we actually lived there. We loved their beautiful dog and adorable cats who were just too cute for words. We came away having learned and discovered so much and we recommend their farm to anyone else considering doing something off the beaten path. For my husband and I, it was truly paradise.

Comments: I just spent 10 beautiful days at farm (half with a friend and half with my husband) -- my only complaint was that it wasn't long enough! Highlights include: a beautiful room with "jungle view" (and very comfy bed), a fantastic lanai with majestic view and the best outdoor reading/relaxing/chilling-with-the-kitties couch EVER, learning to make fresh, delicious macadamia nut milk, an outdoor shower in the late-morning sunshine surrounded by red hibiscus and the occasional peeping-gecko, bottle-feeding the adorable baby goats, and falling asleep to the sounds of crickets and frogs (which I loved so much that I recorded them for home!). The other highlight was the people, who were so friendly, interesting and passionate about their work and the farm. I would (and will!) recommend the farm to anyone, and hope to be back one day too!

Comments: My partner and I had a wonderful four-night stay at Steve and Melinda's farm. Their house is beautiful and relaxing, with a great view of the bay. Loved the animals, especially their friendly cats. Our room, bathroom and the rest of the house were clean and tidy. The hosts were very welcoming and helpful, and recommended places to see and eat. Location is great - very close to two incredible snorkelling spots (Two Step and Kealekakua Bay). Great value for the price.

Comments: We are grateful to have met Steve and Melinda. It was so fun to learn about their ingenious farm and inspiring way of life. Buy their sheep and goat cheese, and especially their tree tomatoes! It tastes like a guava, pomegranate, tomato smoothie.

Comments: Host was great, location was perfect; would stay again in the future

  • Reviewer: Jodie & Travis

Comments: Steve and Melinda were wonderful, as was their farm. They were both warm and engaging, with great conversation about farming, permaculture, and just life in general. The site was beautiful, the place was clean and full of fun and interesting folks (and great cats and chickens and ducks!). Our visit was very enjoyable and their home was a great, community-focused base for us. Just know that this is a working farm, and that Steve and Melinda are both (rightfully) very busy with their interns and the work. Steve and Melinda definitely went out of their way to engage us and spend time with us-inviting us to dinner and to a party for their intern-but the traveler/resident divide was ever present. That said, this place is best if you like being around great folks when they're available but otherwise are self-sufficient and ready to explore the Big Island on your own.

Comments: A lovely working organic farm with a great view of the ocean. We had an awesome breakfast prepared by Stephen, not the owner, who we happend to know from his being the chef at one of our favorite LA restaurants. Talk about farm fresh gourmet breakfast, it was amazing. Highly recommend it. The farm is a super laid back working farm staffed by happy young WWOOFERs. (Hidden by Airbnb) them. There is one small down side to this property though. Its noisy. You may want to consider ear plugs if you are a light sleeper. The night noise are the frogs, the 4am noise are the roosters. This is in no way a deal breaker, it is just the reality of a farm in Hawaii. The upside is that you get to hang out on a super cool farm. We never met Steve and Melinda, they seem to have been away. We were happily attended to by the other farm staff, who were lovely. There are great places for coffee and snacks just at the bottom of the road. There is very nice snorkeling and diving just 15 minutes away. I would recommend staying here. Two thumbs up!

Comments: Steve and Melinda's farm/home up in the Captain Cook area of the Big Island was a peaceful and lovely stay. We arrived late and Steve and Melinda were gone for the other night of our stay so we didn't get to chat much, but when we did they were warm and super informative in helping us plan our days. Their farm is lush and full of chicken and kitties, a great peek into sustainable living in a tropical paradise. The room we stayed in, the Trumpet Room, was clean and well-decorated, with plenty of hangers and closet space too. We had a shared bathroom that was also very clean and pleasant. Their home has amazing views of the Kona coast and wish we could have explored their property a bit more.

Comments: Steve & Melinda's farm is a great place to stay! If you're looking for an exotic alternative to big resorts and crowds that may be your place. Their place is very charming and super clean! And the deck with ocean view perfect for sunsets with a glass of wine! We didn't get to see much of the hosts, but the room had a little folder with plenty of recommendations for food and attractions. Perfect to start exploring the Big Island!

Comments: Wonderful location. A short drive down the hill is a wonderful place to kayak and snorkel. I went snorkeling near '2 step' with dolphins playing around. Captian Cook monument is a great place to kayak and snorkel. Good coffee places near by. The fruit and mac nuts on farm were good.

Comments: Steve and company were very accommodating, and the pictures and description do not do justice when describing how immaculate and wonderful the farm turned out to be. If you're looking for a true getaway and a host with a warm personality, I'd highly recommend taking advantage of the Farm/Eco-Stay.

Comments: This place was a perfect place to land in the evenings after spending all day exploring the island. It's close to amazing snorkeling, and you can head out and return here for a quiet, relaxing stay. Booked a massage with Melinda, and it was wonderful!! The farm was everything I hoped it would be! I look forward to returning to Kona and would definitely stay at Honaunau Farm again. Mahalo Steve and Melinda.

Comments: Paul & I had an amazing time at Steve & Melinda's farm. Their place is absolutely beautiful. It's hard to put into words! The view from the farm in the morning and at dusk is breathtaking. Some of our most memorable moments on the island were spent with all the little critters on the farm! Steve and Melinda were both so welcoming and made sure we were well taken care of. One of our favorite spots on the farm was definitely their outdoor shower. We don't get to take many of those back here in Seattle!!!! It was so refreshing being underneath the warm water and out in the fresh air. It is also very special to us because Paul proposed in the outdoor shower! Such a romantic setting and very unforgettable for the both of us. We loved Honaunau Farm and would definitely recommend it to anyone traveling to the Big Island.

Comments: The experience on Honaunau farms compliments the breathtaking view overlooking the ocean that cradles the Captain Cook area of Big Island. Waking up to the crisp magic air in the morning primes your spirit to fully embrace the abundant life and energy the island offers. Steve and Melinda's place is a very grounding environment making it perfect for early morning meditation and yoga. The atmosphere is one that allows you to drop all your mental distractions so you are able to focus on whatever you choose. The different plant and animals on the farm bring you back to a well rounded relationship and help to redevelop respect with not just the earth but the lifeforms we share it with as well. I don't just like the permaculture system they use for their farm, I love the care in which Steve and Melinda have integrated it so that we can experience the great majesty of life on a small scale that is literally easy to digest and compellingly captivating. Wait till you try the dried bananas and Macadamia nut milk they make on the farm. Amazing! Equally amazing are the individuals who staff the farm and the care in which they tend to the duties of such a vibrant existence. It seems that even the other guests are somehow called here to contribute to this farms existence reaching out to say hello to the world with such a welcoming and loving embrace. There are so many good things to mention. This place is a wonderful place to spring board off of to see the rest of the island and when you head back home, it will share with your friends and family the radiance as you tell your stories of all of these wonderful things that came together, at Honaunau farms.

Comments: Our stay at Honaunau Farm was awesome. All the photos could not express the real beauty of your cozy place. We enjoyed it very much. The house and kitchen where very tastfully equiped. We are usually quite critical with almost everything, but you shocked us. I looked to Anja,.... and,... there where nothing to argue!! Great!!! Thank you! We will recomend your place to our friends.

Comments: Steve and Melinda are very generous with their home and farm. It is a neat place with a lot of great energy. The remote location on the hillside made for a gorgeous view in the morning and the farm fresh eggs were delicious. The room we had shared a bathroom and there is little privacy in the place, but well worth the price.

Comments: My stay on Steve and Melinda's organic farm was nothing short of amazing. What they are doing, on the Big Island, is so inspiring, and it will stick with me, even after I checked out. For starters, the location could be hard to find, BUT Steve and Melinda's directions are spot on, and if you follow them, you will not get lost. Steve was there to greet me when I pulled into their driveway. He gave me a quick tour and overview of the property, and then set me off to go play with BABY SHEEP and BABY GOATS! Cuteness overload! This, of course, was not required of guests, but I was dying to hold the baby animals. ;) The fresh macadamia nuts and the postcard-like sunsets from the lanai added to the perfection of this listing. If you ever stay here, be sure to use the outdoor shower as it as pure magic. I highly recommend Steve and Melinda's farm for anyone who wants to experience the non-high rise resort side of Hawaii. You will not be disappointed!

Comments: The Eco-lodge at Steve and Melinda's was like a dream come true. What a stunning place to visit. Before you even enter the house the property is packed with lush vegetation, flowers, fruit, herbs, trees and shrubs, decorated so thoughtfully with an eclectic grouping of statues, pots, shells and comfortable furniture to lounge in.... AND THE VIEW ahhhh it will take your breath away! Make sure to wander the grounds to get a full appreciation for what they have done here, and to play with all the wonderful animals meandering the property: ducks, chickens, rabbits, sheep, cats and the sweetest little old dog you've ever met. CAT ALLERGIES? Not to worry. My husband has horrible cat allergies and the cats are NEVER allowed in the guest quarters, but do be aware that they are all over the lanai, and if you have allergies I to probably stay clear of any outside upholstery.. but seriously my husband never had a problem. The guest house is just fantastic!!!! Two guest bedrooms, one with a private bath the other with a shared bath. A beautiful well stocked kitchen and comfortable dining and living room area for lounging, do be considerate about using your hosts kitchen products - this is their private home so if you are doing cooking (beside spices set aside for your use) make sure to bring your own food. They did have coffee & farm fresh eggs available for purchase. Our room was thoughtfully decorated and VERY comfortable and VERY private... we really didn't want to leave. We also highly recommend using the outdoor shower, it's clean, private with beautiful views of the property - it takes a minute for the hot water to get running but once it is works like a dream. I'm a big outdoor shower fan.. and didn't once take a shower indoors Melinda is also a very skilled massage therapist. My husband and I booked a 90 min massage each and did not regret a minute of it. I recommend you take advantage of her skills during your stay. We plan on returning again and staying with Steve and Melinda - and probably for a lot longer next time.

Comments: Great farm airbnb. Clean, amazing views, share stories with travelers from around the world. Amazing avocados, eggs, and mac nuts. Steve is a wonderful host.

Comments: We had a short, but wonderful stay at the Farm. Loved the opportunity to stay and explore a sustainable, working farm, that was nonetheless comfortable, well-appointed and equipped. Standouts were the *beautiful* lanai and view, and the outdoor shower was such a treat. Wish we'd had a chance to meet Steve & Melinda (who were on vacation during our visit), but the rest of the farm community members were friendly, helpful, and easy-going. Definitely recommended!

Comments: The farm is amazingly beautiful and the house has a great view of the ocean. It is definitely worth taking a stroll through the farm to get a view of all the animals & trees. There are two great take-out food spots on the highway within a block of the highway entrance: Super J's and Big Jake's Island BBQ: both are highly rated on Yelp and Trip Advisor. Get to Big Jake's sooner rather than later because with all their customers, they can run out some menu choices. At the house, for evening entertainment, you can watch your own Netflix on their big HD TV. One of the most noticeable attributes of the house is that it is beautifully decorated, very clean, and has plenty of hot water for a group to get in a few showers in succession. Steve is a great guy and I really enjoyed meeting him, getting a tour of the farm, and his helpful advice for the area.

Comments: Steve and Melinda's Eco retreat B&B at Honaunau was simply amazing, unique, peaceful and memorable. The house was slightly up the mountain in a beautiful area just south of Kona. Just far enough away from the touristy hustle and bustle of Kona but still close enough. We didn't get to meet Melinda but Steve was an awesome nice guy who runs an Eco farm and small B&B. The house was good size, very clean and felt like a home. Have to admit we got lucky cuz nobody else was there so we had the whole house to ourselves! Our favorite parts was the outdoor shower, beautiful large lanai & seclusion. So, if you don't need the pampering resort or five star hotel feel this place is definitely for u!

Comments: This is the third time we've visited the farm. It is a really beautiful piece of land in a gorgeous region of the island. The view from the lanai is incredible. The hosts are very calm and healthy people and quickly respond to requests. I want to go back again already. It is also conveniently located near some of the greatest swimming areas of the island, good healthy restaurants, and adventures in every direction. I highly recommend a stay here for anyone interested in sustainable approaches to living.

Comments: We spend 3 delightful nights at Steve and melinda's eco-resort. We shared their 3 bedroom guest house with various interesting and thoughtful guests, even an informal party one evening. Views are spectacular, beds comfortable, kitchen adequate for cooking meals, and farm and animals a delight. Steve and his workers on the farm were interesting and helpful. Location is excellent for seeing south Kona area. Be sure to arrive in the daylight as it is tucked away on a lush hillside and would be tricky to find at night.

Comments: Wow! What a magical spot! I highly recommend staying with Steve and Melinda at their retreat! A beautiful, clean home with sensational sunsets over the ocean can be admired on the porch, super cozy bedroom with a great sense of artful design, and a great kitchen with homemade organic food available from their farm. We were impressed and inspired by their wholesome lifestyle, and made friends with the other like minded travellers who are attracted to this kind of experience. A true Hawaiian sanctuary!

Comments: The pictures don't do justice to how beautiful and relaxing Steve and Melinda's place really is. They accommodated us at short notice and even upgraded us for the Christmas holiday. We did not have the opportunity to meet them, but their farm crew made sure we had everything we needed and showed us around the farm. This is a great Eco friendly place to stay in a beautiful location!

Comments: Very nice place, and very unusual. The hosts are nice, and everything is well kept. It's a very tucked-away place, however, and not findable by my GPS, so one tip is to get there before dark (it's harder to find after dark).

Comments: Steve and Melinda's Farm was the best place we stayed during our stay in Hawaii. Beautiful views, farm, and comfortable sleeping. It would be my first choice to stay there if we decide to visit the island again.

Comments: If you're interested in activities in the South Kona region of Hawaii, or just establishing the area as your home base for exploring other parts of the island, this is a beautiful place to stay. This farm on a hillside offers gorgeous panoramic views of the bay below. The guest house is beautifully furnished with ample space for cooking and dining. My only disappointment was not getting to meet the hosts (I met Melinda as I was checking out) or getting an opportunity to learn more about their farm.

Comments: From the moment we entered the front gate and wound up the driveway past citrus and welcoming ducks, we happy to be at home. Steve was a friendly host who gave us space to make the place ours for the time. It is a beautiful Asian-inspired home, open, airy and relaxed. We loved hanging out on the sheltered porch and comfortable living room. The kitchen is well-organized and equipped with plenty of space for refrigerated and dry foods and we enjoyed the fruits the hosts provided for sampling. I never used the indoor shower as the outdoor one is spacious and has a beautiful view up the hill and into plants. The bed was easy to sleep in with plenty of fresh air and ceiling fan. We loved our time on the farm.

Comments: We had a blast, as usual. There was fresh fruit in the kitchen from the farm upon our arrival, and I love lilikoi, tamarillo, oranges, and avocados. The farm is really interesting, particularly how they integrate the care of goats and sheep into the fertility the land. The milk is delicious! The view and sunsets, incredible. The hosts are dedicated to the health of the land, people and whole community around Honaunau, and it really shows. Also, the location can't be beat. It is near bunch of good restaurants, close to some of the best swimming and snorkeling on the Big Island, and just up the hill from important Hawaiian cultural sights and heiau. I've been three times and can't wait to visit again. You can have a lot of fun, learn so much, and enhance your health without ever leaving the farm and surrounding areas.

Comments: Great affordable place to stay with a wonderful view and cozy surroundings. I enjoyed interacting with the other guests and we even went out for breakfast together at the Coffee Shack which was a treat. Good location for exploring south Kona, especially Place of Refuge and 2 Step for snorkeling with the spinner dolphins.

Comments: Steve and Melinda are kind and gracious hosts. You can be as involved as you like in farm activities and classes, or not, as you choose. The property was wonderful to walk, the house is excellent with great views. Nicely equipped kitchen - though bring your own spices. The pictures don't do it justice. It was great to watch fantastic sunsets from the spacious covered deck. The cool mountain breezes were wonderful for sleeping at night. It is the perfect spot for access to some of the best sites south of Kona. You are 10 minutes to two of the most fantastic and special places on the island: Two Step beach is next to the second most sacred ancient Hawaiian site, The Place of Refuge, or Pu'uhonua o Honaunau and the bay there is great snorkeling with very good reef life and healthy coral. It is next to Kalekekua Bay which is a marine reserve, you will need to read up on access, but snorkel or kayak tours, or kayaking on your own are well worth it. Both bays are where Spinner Dolphins often come to sleep during the day. If you snorkel at Two Step and find the Dolphins, please let them decide to interact, respect their need for rest after hunting all night. It is a magical experience to be chosen by a dolphin for interaction, but do not pursue them. Honaunau is 90 minutes from Volcano National park and is also an easy drive into Kailua-Kona. I highly recommend this wonderful sanctuary.

Comments: Our stay at the farm was so lovely! I am truly grateful for the experience. Our host and the community were very welcoming and kind to share their homes with us for the week. The land is absolutely beautiful, it was nice to be a part of and to be surrounded by the diversity of life. There were so many different plants it was really amazing and fun to go around and check out, and we also got fresh fruit that were so delicious. The animals were adorable, I loved loved loved the goats and sheep - I definitely would recommend the goat and sheep milk too! We could not have been happier with the environment, it was beautiful and peaceful. The house and the view were stunning, I really enjoyed the meditation space. We were also fortunate to join in on a communal dinner which was quite the treat! The farm is in a great location, easy to get to places and good to retreat back to after a long day. Overall, we had a very pleasant experience during our time on the farm and would definitely come back and recommend to anyone! Steve was very welcoming and kind to give us some suggestions as to what to do and where to go, and whenever we needed anything was able to help. We are happy with the time we spent here, we loved every minute, and plan on visiting again.

Comments: We had a wonderful stay at Honaunau EcoRetreat. The view from the lanai is absolutely spectacular and rejuvenating-- our second morning we sat there watching the most beautiful rainbow arch from mountain side to ocean. The guest house has everything you need to feel comfortable and at home, not to mention being spotless and beautifully appointed. The outdoor shower was lovely. Steve and Melinda were busy, and very welcoming and kind when we finally caught up with them. It's super inspiring to see the farm in action and fun to watch the ducks waddle around. We were pretty surprised by the sound of the coqui frogs, but it's a fascinating part of the changing ecosystem of the Big Island and miss them now that we're back on the mainland. Highly recommend!!!

Comments: Amazing, peaceful place. We were welcomed right away by Steve showing us around the beautiful home. It is decorated beautifully. The kitchen is well equipped with anything you may need, just bring groceries, fruit is plentiful throughout the property so if you forget anything don't worry! We took a couple permaculture classes from Steve and the wonderful organic picnic that Melinda and the lovely care takers made for us on the balcony overlooking the beautiful ocean. This place is amazing for those looking to explore the world of sustainability. Whether you are new to the practice or fully involved this place is for you. I would highly recommend this farm for anyone who wants to get away from the town hustle and bustle but remain close enough to everything to make easily accessible. Thank you so much Steve and Melinda, we enjoyed your home and your time. Hope to see you again very soon!

Comments: Peaceful and lovely retreat center located on the mountain overlooking the sea. The lanai has amazing views and we loved falling asleep to the hum of the forest. This is a three bedroom house with a full kitchen and two bathrooms, plus a yoga/mediation room in the back. The host lives in a different house on the property. We had a great time! Would recommend.

Comments: We arrived on a day when the hosts were gone, but they left clear and explicit instructions for us on access. They also provided information on local restaurants and attractions that was very helpful. This is a lovely place! We enjoyed exploring the farm, and the house was clean, serene, and quiet. Our room had a very comfortable bed and was screened by a jacaranda tree. The view from the lanai in particular is stunning. We had trouble tearing ourselves away to do other things.

Comments: Honaunau EcoRetreat Farm exceeded our expectations. We loved our stay here!!! It was such a peaceful setting, situated on a hillside with an amazing view and happened to be located in the middle of our planned snorkeling activities. The ocean view from the lanai was spectacular. We had farm fresh eggs and fruit each morning, and enjoyed watching the animals roam throughout the farm. We received a vary warm welcome from Steve and Melinda when we arrived and got to chat with them a few moments during our stay. When we make it back to the Big Island, we will definitely stay here again!!

Comments: Steve and Melinda has an amazing farm up on the mountain. The house is nice and the lanai with a spectacular view is awesome. There are some animals on the farms that are fun to see. There are nice beaches, some restaurants and a good grocery store close by. Steve and Melinda live at the same farm but I only met them briefly. They seemed very nice and helpful. Because of the higher altitude it's a bit rainy and the frogs are loud at night, so this is maybe not for everyone, but it was perfect for me.

Comments: We arrived to this oasis without the hosts on the farm. We figured things out and they had binders located in the rooms and communal areas that listed basic info including their wonderful services to show the farm, tea ceremony, and healing work. The lanai (wrap around porch) had an epic view and we spent many hours lounging on the lovely spaces out there. I was impressed with all the little touches, elegant and homey. We stayed 2 nights and never met our hosts which was nice for privacy reasons but would have liked contact. I guess you have to leave the lanai, haha! I would definitely enjoy staying here again.

Comments: A lovely retreat. I was traveling solo, looking for some R&R and Steve & Melinda's fit the bill perfectly. Relaxing on the lanai, eating fresh fruit from the farm, enjoying a wonderful massage.

Comments: This organic farm is my wife's favorite place we have stayed. We loved the privacy and awesome view deck. The cricket and frog serenade in the evening is a very relaxing way to fall asleep.

Comments: My husband and I loved our stay at the main house. We stayed in the Queen size room and our window looked out on a very private and lush garden, so we were able to keep our window open at all times. We loved relaxing on the Lanai on a sunny afternoon, or during a tropical rainstorm, after our day adventures. The kitchen was well equipped, and our last morning there Emily made us a breakfast that was amazing (had I realized how great it was going to be I would have had it every morning). She gathered fresh food from the garden and made sunny side up eggs, chard and mushrooms, purple sweet potatoes and red potatoes, avocados, fresh tangerine juice, star fruit, bananas, and a fresh mint tea. The views from the Lanai are wonderful: tropical forests, the bay, and sunset. The afternoon sun hits the porch. The location is close to the best snorkeling and dolphin hangouts on all the Hawaiian Islands: Keleakakua Bay, Ho'Okena, and two step Honaunau.

Comments: My husband and I stayed four nights, but wished we could have stayed longer. The guest house is beautifully furnished and clean. Words can't accurately describe the beauty of the views from the Lanai. I booked a permaculture class and farm tour with Ashley and Jeremiah...they are very knowledgeable and gracious. Ashley even offered to stay in touch and send me more info. Silvana' was very quick to respond to our messages and is a talented massage therapist! TOP NOTCH!! Look forward to staying at Honaunau again!

Comments: People were lovely and so helpful and the property an adventure for my nature-enthusiast partner. Fresh farm-picked fruit was a great treat. It's a tropical farm, so be aware of mosquito exposure. The common area was stylish and beautiful during the day and sunset - breezes and view. Would enjoy staying here again.
