Neighborhood Overview: Bedford Stuyvesant is a diverse, vibrant, and wonderful mash up of culture, color, age, and economic level. The neighborhood has been predominantly African American since the 1930's. Before that, the area was a mix of Germans, Irish, Jewish, and Italians. Recently, there has been an influx of immigrants from the Caribbean and Mexico, and from other Brooklyn and Manhattan neighborhoods. These brownstone lined streets are shared by the rich and the poor alike, with a mutual respect for each other. We are living in a dense urban environment, with all of its pros and cons. All around us on Hancock Street are working class families, Wall Street types, writers, artists, social workers, city workers, and professionals of all kinds. As I write this, kids across the street are playing a pick up game of basketball. The music of Brooklyn. This is a real neighborhood with real history. As more people move into the neighborhood, more shops, restaurants, and bars are opening to join the ones tha
Notes: Bedford Stuyvesant borders the always hip neighborhoods of Bushwick and Williamsburg. The B46 bus will take you into the heart of Williamsburg for a fun night out! Also nearby is Crown Heights and the Brooklyn Botanical Garden.
Transit: The subway (A and C) is about 8 minutes away, and the A train will get you into Manhattan in about 20 minutes. The A train also has service to and from JFK airport. We are also about 10 minutes to the J train in Bushwick. The B46 bus will pick you up at the corner of Hancock Street and Malcolm X, and will take you into Williamsburg, or just use UBER! We can also provide you with the most reliable car services that we use ourselves.
Access: Guests may use the backyard. Feel free to enjoy your morning coffee, cigarette, or evening cocktail outside at the table. In the summer months I try to have many flowers in bloom. Smoking is allowed outside only. Also, sit on the stoop in the front if you want to take in our lively and eccentric neighbors! Sadly, I must insist that jumping on the trampoline is strictly off-limits.
Interaction: David, myself, and our two children live upstairs. One of us will be available to you to answer any questions and to get you comfortably set up downstairs during your stay. The doors to the apartment lock for your privacy. We seldom go downstairs into the common area hallway, so you could go days without seeing us.
House Rules: We want you to enjoy your stay with us at Hancock House, so please enjoy your cigarette outside. Please no smoking of any kind inside. Keep front door gate locked tight day and night whether you are at home or out. Keep back door locked when out or at night. Hot water in shower is at the "beginning." Please recycle. Refer to the helpful stickers on inside of the recycling can. Please flush only the toilet paper provided. All feminine products, Kleenex, baby wipes, etc can be disposed of in the trash can. Please no burning of incense or candles. Please do not allow anyone into our home who is not on the reservation.

Comments: Nicci and David were fantastic hosts! They were incredibly helpful and friendly right through the booking process, answered our queries promptly, greeted us with a smile and gave us tips on what to go see during our stay. They were there whenever we had questions but left us to enjoy our stay otherwise. The place itself is absolutely gorgeous, beautifully fitted out and decorated and with a comfortable bed. The couch arrived on our last night so we can't give feedback on the fold out but it looked good! Finishing touches such as bottled water, coffee, tea and some snacks to get us through our first jetlagged sleep & breakfast was very generous and much appreciated after a long flight. We didn't really explore the immediate area around the flat but we always felt safe and welcome in the neighbourhood. The subway is close by and makes it super easy to get around Brooklyn and Manhattan. We feel lucky to be the first ones to stay here and had a fantastic stay! Highly recommend it, would definitely stay here again!

Comments: Nicci and David went to great lengths to make us feel welcome and Hancock House was a lovely, functional, and comfortable space. It was truly a home away from home, located conveniently close to public transportation on a quiet block and within walking distance to some great restaurants and shopping. The space itself is balanced and thoughtful- the wonderful hosts had everything we needed to make tea, water, wine (:+)), and snack! The shower water pressure is amazing, the mattress superbly comfortable and beautiful sunlight in the morning. Nicci was a truly gracious host, and Hancock House is absolutely a gem.

Comments: Great space. Nicci was super helpful and gave us loads of information and help with various things. Beautiful apartment only a few blocks from the subway. There was four of us and there was plenty of room. The snacks and milk etc was amazing as we arrived late at night. Thank you so much for a great stay.

Comments: David was very welcoming and explained everything we needed to know about the apartment! He was in touch and super helpful throughout our stay. The apartment itself is cozy and warm, a bit smaller than the pictures, but it was absolutely comfortably sized for the three of us! I'm sure it would also be glorious in the summer months when it's warmer to spend time on the patio in the backyard. The sofa bed and the bed were comfortable and the kitchen was super functional with a great sized stove in case you feel like cooking!

Comments: Nicci and David were incredibly hospitable. The place is very well stocked. I stayed here with my husband and two children. We were very comfortable and had plenty of room. We felt truly at home. The neighborhood is quiet and has several wonderful restaurants within walking distance. The walk to the train is fairly short and the A train takes about 15 minutes to downtown Manhattan. Take a walk down Stuyvesant avenue often. It goes right by Stuyvesant Heights which has beautiful architecture.

Comments: Nicci & David contacted us before our rental period started and arranged to meet as at a convenient time. A friend of their's showed us around the property. They had provided us with a lot to make the stay as comfortable as possible - fresh towels, extra blankets and sheets that could be used for the pull out couch, DVDs to watch on the TV in the lounge, and even wine, sparkling water, and food items and cooking supplies. Nicci had also left a book with all the details for local cafes, restaurants, bars, and the local grocers. My husband and I were very comfortable and we really liked the flat. It for the most part fit what we imagined based on the photographs and description. Throughout our stay Nicci was a gracious host and even helped to lend us their iron when asked. I would recommend their listing.

Comments: We had a wonderful stay at Hancock House. Our hosts Nicci & David were warm, friendly, and very thoughtful. Our garden apartment was charming and immaculate. All the details from the lovely bowl of fruit to the selection of teas were well thought out and beautifully executed. The bed was quite comfortable and the linens were fresh and cozy. Having a kitchen was a pleasant bonus for us, and while we just ate breakfast there, it was outfitted well enough to cook a full dinner. The neighborhood is walkable with a number of interesting restaurants and bars. We will definitely return and would highly recommend this home to our friends.

Comments: The Hancock House was the perfect little getaway immersed in Brooklyn culture. It held all the comforts of our own home. Nicci and David were the perfect hosts and were available to us via phone if anything came up. The location was accessible to all our necessities (Subway, groceries, restaurants) and was very safe. We would definitely recommend staying here, and also look forward to coming back ourselves!

Comments: this apartment was really nice and very clean with great character. David let us in and gave a little tour. he was very friendly. the weather was very cold, and the apartment was chilly at night, but as soon as we asked them for some more heat, they really cranked it. Its really out there in West Brooklyn, but the neighborhood was fine and parking was way easier than if you were in park slope or even further west in Bed Stuy. all in all it was a good experience. i would visit again.

Comments: Nicci and David were both wonderful hosts. They accommodated our early arrival and they kindly showed us around the place. They also left us a booklet filled with places to eat within the area. Nicci left us a bowl of clementines and the fridge had a few items in it incase we got hungry. The apartment was clean, cosy and very beautiful. We had everything we needed; fresh towels, a dresser for our clothes, a TV and some movies too! The heating seems old so expect a few unexpected sounds! I suppose it added to the old charm of the place. Nothing a fellow city dweller can't get used to. Thanks again xo

Comments: Had a great time at this apartment, very clean lovely little home. Would 100% stay here again and would recommend this place to anyone! Nicci greeted us in the evening on the first night and showed us around the apartment and explained how everything worked. The apartment was very kindly stocked with water, food and even a bottle of wine, a very nice touch, we also had a later flight on our last day and Nicci kindly let us check out later, this really helped us not having to carry around big cases all day, the apartment also has great connections to JFK so was ideal to get there via subway. This part of Brooklyn is very residential and quiet with some lovely restaurants and wine bars around, only a ten minute walk to the subway it is very easy to get around Brooklyn and NYC. Again would highly recommend this apartment.

Comments: We had an exceptional stay and Nicci and David's apt! They are both friendly and responsive. The listing is very accurate. The apt was clean and comfortable with so many nice touches that made us feel right at home! We even extended our stay by 2 days! We appreciated the white linens that were all soft and warm. Fruit, waters, coffee, teas, 1/2 & 1/2, wine, and basic cooking neccesstities supplied. I like that there were no scents like air fresheners or candles around and that many items were organic. They recycle too! Subway A train is within walking distance and a quick ride into Manhattan! This is an up and coming urban neighborhood but we always felt safe and the street is filled with families and beautiful brownstones. There are some great neighborhood restaurants close by as well.

Comments: Lovely home, lovely hosts. We were greeted on time, shown around the space, and best of all there were fruit , soda, coffee, and other necessities stocked in the fridge and awaiting us. We were starved and didn't feel like trekking out, so it meant a lot. Very comfortable bed and sofa. We cooked a bit in the kitchen and found everything satisfactory. The neighborhood seemed safe enough. Nicci and David answered all of our texts promptly and came down to assist us when we couldn't get the TV to work. They allowed us to stay a few hours past checkout time in order to accommodate our flight. All in all, an excellent experience in our first brownstone. I would recommend staying with them.

Comments: This is a very nice appartment. The kitchen is really nice, although we only used it for toasting bread in the morning. The bathroom is clean and the bed is comfortable. You can just sit down and relax after a busy day in Manhatten :-). Nicci and David were very friendly and ready to help whenever needed.

Comments: Nicci and David were exceptional hosts, from arrival to departure, they were available, friendly and very helpful. They have created a beautiful, warm, and tastefully decorated garden apartment which mixes timeless vintage touches with the comforts of modern living. The neighbourhood is tree-lined, with beautiful brownstones on both sides of the street. It is less than 10 minutes walk to the MTA Station for connections to Manhattan and other Brooklyn neighbourhoods. The listing photos of the apartment are very accurate, the neighbourhood is friendly and close to stores and restaurants - we tried Peaches Cafe for modern soul food and Saraghina for Italian food - both were exceptional and only a short walk away!

Comments: Nicci and David were great hosts. Nicci met us with the keys and gave us a good tour of the apt. along with some things we needed to know, where all the light switches were and lock up process. The apt. was spotless and the furnishings beautiful. There were drinks in the fridge and fresh fruit in a bowl for us, a very nice touch. Check out time was 11:00AM but Nicci text me it was ok if we were a little later. Great weekend in a beautiful home!

Comments: Our hosts Nicci and David were great - communication was quick and accurate and they were super nice. They checked in with us over the weekend to make sure we had everything we needed. David met us on arrival and showed us the apartment. Location is great - really close to all the good neighborhood restaurants, grocery store etc. I liked the apartment, but it did lack a door to the bedroom, which I failed to notice in the pictures. (My fault) The bedroom is located between the living room and the kitchen and it's really small. The bed was a little low, and only a full size, which we aren't used to, but very nice linens and comforter. There is an outside area with a table which we didn't take advantage of, but it is a nice space. The hosts provided a bottle of wine, fruit, coffee and half and half, and some breakfast stuff in the refrig, which was much appreciated, since we got there about 7PM on Friday night. I loved their vintage kitchen! Really cute, lots of pots and pans for cooking, great stove. All in all it was well priced and a convenient location. It's a ground floor apt, so there isn't a lot of light with the curtains closed, which you really need to do since you are on the street level. If you don't care about a large space and a big bed, book it! Great hosts!

Comments: Loved staying in Hancock House! Nicci was so helpful from booking to departure - giving travel advice & directions, recommendations and always responding to messages. We greatly appreciated that there were drinks in the fridge, and tea & milk as we had flown from Scotland. When it became extremely hot in New York Nicci kindly thought to bring us a electric fan. Nicci & David were very relaxed hosts; we met them on departure and they were lovely! The apartment itself is beautifully decorated & furnished - there are lots of original features, and everything is of a high standard. The bed was lovely & the mattress very comfortable. They have extremely good taste and the flat was a pleasure to be in - well laid out and impeccably clean. The area, Bed-Stuy, is great and a lot of fun! We found it convenient for Manhattan & other parts of Brooklyn - you can walk to the nearest Subway through brownstone lined streets, and the residents are very friendly and greeted us often. Bed-Stuy is a very lively area - when we stayed in June, lots of folk were out on the streets having a good time. There seems to be a good sense of community. Nicci & David recommended a great coffee shop, Brunswick, and pizza restaurant, Saraghina - food was delicious at both & staff were very friendly. All in all, staying at Hancock House really enhanced our time in New York and Bed-Stuy feels authentic and is an experience in itself. We'd definitely stay here again. Thank you Nicci & David!

Comments: Nicci and David were great hosts and we had a very good experience in Hancock house. The apartment is beautifully furnished, very comfortable and nice and private. Hancock street and the general area around Bedstuy is full of colour and because we were staying with in a distinct community it felt more authentic as an experience. Sometimes hotels can have an impersonal feeling where as staying here gave a strong sense of place. There are also some very nice places to eat close by.

Comments: Just wow. I recommend Hancock House 110% Nicci & Dave were absolutely the ultimate hosts. They were quick to respond, helpful, professional and so welcoming. Down to the smallest detail everything was perfect. We couldn't have had a more pleasant stay at Hancock House. The stunning apartment is beautifully decorated and immaculately kept. It looks exactly as pictured. The entire house was spotlessly clean on arrival. The garden terrace outside was our perfect haven for a morning coffee or a cold afternoon beer. The kitchen is well equipped to cook at home and Nicci was kind enough to stock the fridge with the essentials for us, including a lovely welcome bottle of wine. The location is great and has some great spots to eat and drink nearby, on our hosts recommendation! Bed-Stuy is a vibrant, fun neighbourhood. Utica Avenue subway is only about a 10 minute walk and connects you to C and A trains to Manhattan. We would love to return again to stay with this wonderful family!

Comments: My 17 year old daughter and I went to New York to celebrate her high school graduation. I wanted a place where it was comfortable and safe. Staying here was like staying at "home". And that was the number one thing I wanted when looking for a place to stay? It was comfortable and very cozy. Everything you need to prepare a meal was available in the kitchen. Nicci made it a point to have some fruit, half and half, butter, English muffins in the fridge. And of course the two bottles of were a nice treat after waking all day in New York. All the basic things one would need are available at the apartment. The queen size fold out bed in the front room was good and my daughter stayed in the adjoining bedroom. If you are staying on a hot time of the year, make sure to have the AC in the front room and the fan in the kitchen running during the night. It keeps it perfect. Everything about the apartment meet our needs and it was very clean. If you are looking for a place where you can make a meal and head out the door for the day and return for the evening for a meal and restful place, then this is the place to stay. Walking to and from the subway was about an 8-10 minute walk to the Utica station. If you want to catch some of the local eats, Nicci has a book on the kitchen counter that proved helpful. We suggest Manny's and Emerline's for breakfast. The food was very good at each. For an evening of Italian food, Nicci has Sereghina's listed. Excellent choice for Italian food. My daughter and I highly recommend treating yourself to the Tiramisu for dessert. It was superior. Walking through the neighborhood we felt safe. As with anywhere, be ware of your surroundings. Now about Nicci, What an angel! And I mean that. She was so kind enough to wait up for us for a midnight arrival. And before we even arrived, she was in constant communication with regarding the accommodations and the numerous questions I had about the area. During our stay she would periodically check on us to make sure everything was going well. Just a true blessing to us. She is part of the reason we will be coming back to her place. Forget the high priced New York hotels. Stay here because it like staying at a cozy home. Also, the area is going through revitalization with new restaurants, businesses, and remodel of apartments. This area will be the next "place to stay" in New York area. I am most definitely bringing my wife and mother to stay here or any time I am in the area for business or pleasure. Loved the apartment and loved Nicci.

Comments: Nicci and David were so easy to work with and their house is gorgeous. I had rented it for my parents as they were coming to visit from Ohio. I wanted them to stay in Brooklyn for this stay and I think Nicci and David's place was exactly what we were all looking for. The space was as clean as could be and, even though Nicci and David were out of town, they were extremely hospitable with checking in on the daily to make sure my parents were ok and they were comfortable. If you're in Bed Stuy and need a place to stay, I'd highly recommend The Hancock House.

Comments: My fiance and I came down for a wedding nearby and were so happy we found the Hancock House! It was our very first AirBnB experience and it was a great one. We would 100% stay here again. Nicci and David made you feel right at home and completely comfortable and were very accommodating. They were very responsive from booking to check out, even helping us know which subway lines to take. It was super close to the subway station which was convenient for us as we were carrying a bit of stuff. The house is exactly as pictured - super clean, spacious and beautifully decorated. The fridge had the essentials in it, which was greatly appreciated. The patio out back was nice to sit in at night with a bottle of wine. There are a lot of great restaurants close and the book they have in the kitchen is great to help you find them. We felt safe walking around, even late at night but as with anywhere in the city, be aware of your surroundings and where you are walking. Looking forward to coming back some day and hopefully for longer!

Comments: Nicci and David were the perfect hosts. Regardless of our unorthodox check-in/check-out time, both Nicci and David made themselves available to greet us at the door. They were always easy to get a hold of by text or email. My wife and I have a tendency to be more private and stay to ourselves. That being said, Nicci and David managed to still be very helpful. They left more than enough linens and essentials for us to use. They were even kind enough to leave us an extensive book of recommendations for dining and shopping within the neighborhood if we were so inclined. The listing was EXACTLY as listed. Not a single thing looked out of place. It was clean and all the amenities (wifi, A/C, etc.) worked as advertised and kept us comfortable. During the day, the neighborhood was bright and lively. You felt safe walking everywhere. I would caution that walking home at a very late hour (4 AM) might feel a little less safe but this could be said of almost any neighborhood in the world. Regardless of the time of day, we felt perfectly safe and sound when we stayed within Hancock House. The security to the house seemed like more than enough. If we visit NYC/BK again, we will be sure to stay with Nicci and David again and would HIGHLY recommend them to everyone we know!

Comments: We can really recommend this apartment located in a charming and pleasant street in Brooklyn. It is relatively close to public transportation that can take you into Manhattan. But there is also much to see in the immediate area. New and nice restaurants of different variety, such (Website hidden by Airbnb) which is absolutely worth a visit. The hosts to the home, David and Nicci has many more tips on restaurants and bars, and they will gladly tell you. We had a wonderful week and can most trust to recommend others to rent this apartment. The apartment is cozy and in very good condition, private entrance and with the possibility to use the patio for example, eat breakfast or just relax for a while. The hosts were very helpful and easy-to communicate with. Anders & Ulrika

Comments: Het e-mailcontact verliep erg goed.

Comments: We had a brilliant stay at the Hancock House. The flat was great, lovely sized living room and a kitchen stocked with essentials which would've been great to cook in had we not been so busy eating out! Nikki and David were fantastic hosts with excellent communication and some great recommendations of local haunts (don't miss the cocktails at Casablanca!). We felt so at home living in the flat for a week...we didn't want to leave! We'd definitely recommend staying here and would book again if/when we return to NY. Emily & Nick

Comments: My wife, two kids, and I stayed in this lovely apartment for a weekend trip to New York. Nicci kindly met us at the door despite our very late arrival and was very accommodating with letting us return the keys late on Sunday. The apartment is very nicely decorated and comfortable. The book of restaurants in the kitchen was helpful and accurate. We were able to find parking on the street without trouble. The walk to the subway takes about 15 minutes with kids, 10 without. We enjoyed our stay.

Comments: Nicci and Dave made sure that everything was arranged upon our arrival. Communication was great and LOIS super friendly and welcoming. When we entered the cozy cute apartment it was very clean and tidy and lovely decorated. We really loved the personal welcome note for Liam and also the fact that basics such as bagels and even a bottle of wine was provided. On our check out nite I could not reach a taxi and Nicci was so kid to order one for me. Thank you so much for that.

Comments: The flat was really cosy and Nicci & David were extremely helpful. Our stay there was very comfortable and we enjoyed relaxing evening in the flat after the long walks through NY. Concerning the neighbourhood, it is probably not the nicest area of Brooklyn but it was totally uncomplicated for us. The subway is about 8 min by foot and the lines A and C bring you directly to Manhattan in 30 - 45 min.

Comments: Nicci and David had the bnb setup in a manner where I felt welcome upon entering. We didn't necessarily want to run out and find food immediately upon arrival, so it was wonderful to see a few items around that we could snack on (actually they lasted throughout our week's stay) before getting a formal meal. There was also an assortment of cooking odds-and-ends that were in the kitchen area (olive oil, salt and pepper, etc) that made being away from home easier. The area of the bnb is a neighborhood called Bed-Stuy. It's a beautiful and historic neighborhood, a neighborhood that has a great vibe, but it's also a neighborhood in Brooklyn. It's not in Midtown Manhattan or a popular tourist area for first time NYC visitors. We absolutely LOVE the area, it's near where we lived in Brooklyn in the past with our kids, but be aware of the neighborhood before you jump into the bnb. I'd encourage you to stay in Bed-Stuy, but only after you realize that it's a bit more "rough around the edges" (it's not an unsafe location of course) in how it appears to a tourist than popular areas in Manhattan. That being said, if you're looking to stay in a real Brooklyn neighborhood, you can hardly do better than this spot. The house is in amazing shape. It's been beautifully maintained and has great decor throughout the bnb. This is no shabby tourist hotel! You'll be staying inside a beautiful piece of history built in the late 1800's. David and Nicci are warm and helpful when any assistance is required. They have great recs for the neighborhood (places to go, etc) and keep a great space for their guests. Also, as far as transit you'll be close to multiple helpful bus lines and have access to the express A train, which is helpful in getting around town.

Comments: We had a great 4 weeks at Nicci and David's apartment. It was comfortable, tastefully decorated and a good size for such a long stay. The bath was also a big plus for us as we did lots of walking as was the comfortable bed. Friends joined us for the last week and it accommodated us all easily. The large kitchen, the use of the outside area and two sitting areas meant four of us had plenty of room. We all found it very homely. We really appreciated Nicci and David's flexibility in terms of check in and check out to accommodate our flights and the advice on taxis. Nicci and David are great hosts - very friendly and hospitable and they were responsive to our needs, They are also good company and we enjoyed spending time with them talking about the area and life in the city, watching the girls having fun on the trampoline. Certainly that made the place feel very much our home for the month. The apartment is close to 2 subway lines and it has 2 bus routes on its doorstep. This made it very convenient for getting around and it was a relatively quick trip on the A express train into Manhattan and back at night. The area is safe to walk around at night and we found it interesting particularly as it is changing due to re-gentrification. Mannys' nearby has the best coffee we found in NYC and good food as does the restaurant Saraghina with good bread at their bakery. The little grocery on the corner opposite Saraghina is also good for fruit and veges as well as other staples. Oliviani has a good wine selection. The bar Lunatico has great music at night. We enjoyed being able to go out in the neighbourhood after a day in Manhattan and also spending the warm nights in the quiet of the back yard. So great hosts and an apartment with everything you need in a location that isn't upmarket but is safe and interesting.

Comments: Large, clean and beautiful apartment with a super well equipped kitchen. Nicci was an excellent communicator and was able to accommodate our arrival even though our flight was delayed by more than 7 hours. The neighbourhood can appear a little edgy, but nothing that a dose of self confidence can't overcome.

Comments: The best! I can't recommend David and Nicci's place enough. What a good find in NYC. This is one of the nicest Airbnb's I've ever stayed in. The apartment is in a beautiful condition having been recently lovingly renovated and the area is great. Super quick (and easy) to get there from Manhattan and near all of the cool stuff in Brooklyn. Loads of nice amenities nearby and the best healthfood Deli ever on the corner right next to the apartment. Nicci and David are super nice and friendly. They were in constant communication and really easy to get hold of. They were so flexible about when we arrived and left, even though we messed them around a bit and the apartment had everything you need in it. Right down to breakfast muffins and little cosmetics in the bathroom cupboard. Made it such a comfortable and convenient stay. I'll definitely be back if I come to NYC again.

Comments: We stayed here for 4 nights and could happily have stayed for even longer. Nicci was really helpful offering recommendations for meals and a drink, and the apartment was very clean and comfortable and had great historic details and style. We slept well every night- the bed was comfortable and cozy. The bathroom shower was very nice and felt more like a hotel- nice towels, great water pressure and very clean and new. We enjoyed morning coffee in the back room (it was a bit rainy otherwise we'd have enjoyed the backyard!) and felt at ease throughout our stay. I would recommend this apartment to anyone looking for a nice slice of Bed-Stuy, well within easy access to the subway and great cafes and meals within walking distance.

The apartment is just a little walk from the train station "Utica" that takes you easy to Manhattan and around Brooklyn. Comments: Nicci and David's place is a lovely classic brownstone in Brooklyn. My wife and I arrived on a late flight and was guided by text from them to the house. The suite is on the bottom level of the house with its own entrance. It was very clean and well laid out. There were snacks in the fridge and a bottle of wine waiting for us which was much appreciated because we were hungry after the flight. With hot weather the nights were muggy but fortunately they had a fan and an air conditioner that made for a comfortable stay. We enjoyed having our morning coffee (also provided) while sitting in the backyard. We'd venture everyday out to Manhattan on the subway which is about a ten minute walk away. I wondered how safe this neighbourhood would be late at night but every night we'd return in the AM on the subway and felt very comfortable .The people in the area are friendly and community minded and it's quiet at night. There are a number of stores, cafes and restaurants with a good selection. Nicci and David are great hosts and very helpful. We enjoyed staying there and would recommend it to friends.

Comments: Gorgeous apartment. Nicci & David generously stocked the fridge and cupboards with some extras and provided a useful, well thought out list of locals restaurants, bars and amenities. Would highly recommend! Bed Stuy is great for a more lived-in New York experience. From what we discovered, there's more of a young, edgier crowd that's started to slowly move in. It's at the stage where there's a lot of lovely local spots popping up but it hasn't gotten close to being over-saturated (like a lot of heavily gentrified areas in Brooklyn). Also it's where they shot Do The Right Things, so what's not to like!

Comments: Wow, wow, wow, you won't be disappointed when you stay at Hancock House. Not only is spacious, beautifully furnished and spotlessly clean, hosts Nicci and David truly are the hosts with the most! Extremely friendly and welcoming they anticipated our every need, just when I thought we could do with clean towels Nicci messaged me asking if we need clean towels! One morning we woke up and it was pouring rain and at our door were two umbrellas! Seriously this woman is a hospitality goddess! At first the neighborhood and trip to Manhattan can be a little intimidating however we found both to be really quite fine. The neighborhood has a lot of great little restaurants and bars like Chez Oscar (a gorgeous little french place where you must try the truffle fries and the cheese plate) there are also a handful or laundromats who will wash, dry and fold your washing for about a dollar a pound. We used Marmies on Malcom X, they were quick and friendly and everything came back lovely and clean in a vacuum sealed bag. Getting to Manhattan is also very simple, do your self a favor and and get an unlimited Metro card, we got one for $33 for 7 days, this will allow you to ride both the buses and the subway. Buses stop on Malcom X regularly and will take your right down to Utica station where you can get the A or C or to Kosiosko station for the J and the Z lines into Manhattan, the bus will also take you right down to Williamsberg. I can't speak highly enough of our stay we loved New York and we loved Hancock House.

They have included all the amenities you will ever need. We arrived when it was starting to warm up, but it stayed cool and fresh in the apartment, and having the fan available to use made our stay very enjoyable. During our last day there, it looked liked it was going to rain, and they had extra umbrellas in the closet that we could use, thank you so much for that! They had fresh fruit out, and even coffee and bread for us. Nicci and David are the nicest people ever! Thank you for hosting us and checking in on us during our stay! Nicci was always available to answer any questions we had. Another plus is the subway is located a short walk away, which takes you anywhere you need to go around the city. There are also many great restaurants around the neighborhood. Nicci recommended we try Manny’s down the street, and we ended up loving that place! Thank you again for your great hospitality! :)

Comments: This place in the Bed-Stuy area is an endlessly charming garden apartment in a beautiful brownstone. David and Nicci have retained a lot of the classic charm of the unit (beautiful wood floors, embossed ceilings, a wide deep kitchen sink, molding along all the walls) and updated it with really thoughtful design, lighting, and details. The days I was in New York was a stretch of particularly hot, humid, stanky days like only NYC has, so I was endlessly grateful for the air conditioner that my hosts had installed in the front sitting room of the space. It definitely worked hard, and kept the place pleasant. Check in and check out were smooth and easy, and during my stay, I saw David several times, and he was a paragon of friendliness. That kindness extended to Nicci's thorough book of advice for nearby food, drink, groceries, etc. They even had a loaf of brioche in the fridge as a welcome! I prefer sleeping with plenty of pillows, and the bed had piles of them that I really appreciated. As I've come to expect in New York in the summers, the trains running to and from Brooklyn were more unpredictable than at other times of year as several lines were serviced, so each day involved researching the most reliable routes around the area. I would definitely stay here again. A great retreat for a single traveler with work or plans in Brooklyn.

Comments: Nicci and David's apartment is perfectly comfortable, and is an easy distance away from the subway, plus numerous stores, bars and restaurants. A couple of the better restaurants we went to during our NY stay were very nearby (Chez Oskar and Trad Room)! As hosts, they were in regular touch to make sure all was okay, and were quick to offer suggestions for the area. It can take a bit of time to get into Manhattan for a day of sightseeing, but it's an easy enough trip, and the upshot is being able to get back out to somewhere a little quieter at the end of the day. I can highly recommend this as a base for people looking to explore New York, or even just to get to know Brooklyn a little better.

Comments: Nicci was very friendly and most accommodating. Hancock House is beautiful! We loved the space, the warmth and comfort it had to offer especially after our eventful days. The location is only minutes away from public transport which is very frequent. Manhattan is only 20- 30 minutes by train. The 7 day metrocard pass (unlimited buses and trains) was beneficial and cost effective. The neighborhood has great places for food and coffee. We especially enjoyed coffee at the Trad Room (also a restaurant), Halsey Traders Market was great for essentials and more... There's also a Vegan cafe next to the market. There's a few laundromats all in short walking distance. We used The Laundry in BK - great customer service, top of the range washing machines and dyers. They have all your laundry product essentials as well as money change machines for your convenience. Overall we loved our stay at Hancock House and would recommend to anyone visiting Brooklyn for the local experience.
