Neighborhood Overview: This is an older, upscale neighborhood, next to the University of Hawaii. Very peaceful and calm. Shops, bus, schools, and library are all walking distance away. There is a beautiful Japanese Garden on the grounds of the University, just 5 minutes walk away.
Notes: PLEASE don't disturb the neighbors! You MUST find the house number - 2636 - ON THE HOUSE before you knock! Our house is two stories, and is the only GREEN AND WHITE house in the vicinity. Look for the red curvy concrete stairs going up to the second story porch. Thank you for keeping peace with our nice neighbors! Note: A dog and some birds live in the main house. Not suitable for people who are hypersensitive to animals. It is almost impossible to eliminate bugs from a cottage in the rainforest. The house is professionally cleaned every other week, or sometimes more often. Check in is at 3pm. Tax ID: W-(PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN)
Transit: Bus stops are about 1.5-2 blocks away, about 5 minutes walk. Easy access to Ala Moana Shopping Center and Waikiki. You can catch a bus to anywhere on the island from Ala Moana Shopping Center. Just know that traveling by bus usually takes 2-3x longer than driving by car. Uber of Lyft is available, and there is speedishuttle service to/from the airport. I don't recommend taking the bus if you have luggage in hand, but for day travel it is fine.
Access: We just ask when you book, to please state your expected arrival and departure times, so we can coordinate cleaning and greeting. We are very flexible about that, unless there are back/to/back bookings. Normally check out is at 11am, and check in is at 3pm.
Interaction: We basically respect your privacy and space, but are happy to answer any questions you may have. . I have been a local in Hawaii for over 60 years (born and raised here). Happy to chat if you would like to chat as well.
House Rules: Aloha, House rules are simple: 1. Just show respect, treat the house as if it were yours, respect other people's property and space 2. No smoking on the premises. Also be courteous to neighbors with cigarette smoking. Best to walk to UH. 3. Washer and dryer is located outside, that may be used by others at times. 4. Office contains a printer that may be used by others at times. 5. Sauna room is located in the main house and is open to be used by anyone at any time. If necessary, you may wander the house for a bathroom to use in emergency (except for cottage or master bedroom bathrooms, which are for private use) 6. Kitchen upstairs is open to be used. We can clear a space for you if you like. 7. Please park on the grass in the front to avoid tow away. The street parking is free, Sat, Sun, and holidays, but there is a school tow away M-F 7:00-8:30am and 2:00-3:30pm. *** Please park properly on the lawn… up to 5 cars must be able to park at all times! Parallel park with the front or back

Comments: Finally made it back home to Oklahoma... Much Mahalo to Lucky and Edgar for their Aloha and Hospitality! Truly enjoyed being back in Honolulu and especially in tranquil Manoa Valley. This is a must place to be if you want to be away from the Waikiki scene. Quiet, peaceful, convenient, and just comfortable. Cozy Cottage as describe!

Comments: We have enjoyed staying at cottage. Reasonable price, good location, beautiful natural environment as it was surrounded by mountain. One thing my mother felt unsafe was the type of bed, which was not regular matress we usually see. We were satisfied with overall aspects of cottage though. Thank you!

Comments: This was a friendly, warm and homey place to stay. University neighborhood was nice and easy to walk to restaurants and stores. Host was friendly and welcoming. The rental was just as advertized -- a cozy cottage, 2 BR and access to sauna.

Comments: We chose Karen's cottage because of it's proximity to an event we were attending. It was perfect for what we needed. We did not spend much time on the property so it worked great. Karen was a wonderful hostess and we felt very welcome. The beds are air mattresses which were comfortable. The kitchen was not set up for cooking full meals, but fine for light food prep. The access to washer and dryer were wonderful. The place seemed a little dirty and in disrepair. If you want a place to lounge in that is more a vacation cottage this is probably not what you are looking for. The koi pond was a nice touch. There is no air system and we got very hot, but fans were provided.

Comments: host welcomed us. However, place was not quite similar as photos what they posted on airbnb website. My family couldn't sleep at all because uncomfortable mattress(2 air mattresses and one futon), bed sheets were not clean. Smell was really bad. Also bathtub seemed not clean. Because used water and some hair in there.

Comments: This is a great little place to use as a central spot for going about town. The neighborhood is quiet, and the many birds and roosters nearby act as a nice natural alarm to get you moving in the morning. Lucky's housemates welcomed us and were very accommodating. The house and furnishings are older and well-used, but it is clean. There are a few windows without screens, so you see a bug every once and a while, but we weren't bothered by much. There were a few ants in the kitchen, but they stayed there and we didn't need to use the kitchen anyway. The futon bed was pretty thin, but my housemates made no complaints about the air mattresses. Overall, a nice place for a few nights of sleeping while seeing the sights.

Comments: Lucky's cottage is exactly as advertised. It is very clean with large air beds, updated furnishings, and wide louvered windows. The spacious kitchen area has an island for eating. The sauna is very nice, and having a washer and dryer available was a big help. Lucky is a gracious host who provided lots of helpful information. The cottage is in her backyard, in a quiet neighborhood close to the university and to a local shopping area. We highly recommend it.

Comments: The host was extremely horrible very unfriendly. However one of the workers named Edgar was amazing he was very nice and kind and made us feel welcome. Karen "lucky" never came to introduce herself we only met her the next day after we complained that the place was filthy. The house was absolutely disgusting it smelled the floors were so dirty that our feet would turn black and feet would stick, there was so much dirt, dust, and cobwebs that it seemed the place was never cleaned in years. The bathroom was worse than a public restroom it was so dirty that we did not want to take a shower in there, there were globs of hair in the bathtub that made it clog up and there was dirt and just disgusting stuff caked up in the bathtub and around it. The beds had crumbs and the pillow covers had stains and smelled, the sheets were dirty and the beds very uncomfortable and kept on deflating. I have traveled a lot in my life and have never ever encountered a place as filthy as this. The only positive thing was that Edgar was a very amazing person. Our host Lucky was very rude and lied about us being able to use the main house. She would not even say hello as we passed by. She is a very dirty person with a very rude attitude. The place had no air condition and the kitchen was so dirty along with the dishes that it felt unsafe to eat or cook in their. They also BBQ right by the back window and when they do this all the smoke comes into the cottage making it black and unbareable to be in their. Please beware and do not waste your money or ruin your vacation by staying at her place it will make you feel disgusting and ruin your vacation and the fact that Lucky is soo rude with bother you even more. Her towels smelled the washer was filthy and over all it was a horrible experience. The only thing is the Edgar was a amazing person. Other than that I will never ever stay at her place. As a host you expect people to be polite and nice and have a clean place ready for you I don't think she should be in the business because she does not possess the skills needed to be host. Please beware of her place. Also there were bugs in the place and that was due to the filth of her cottage. There were roaches, flying tiny gnats and bugs because the place was so very dirty. Please consider my review before deciding to stay at her filthy place.

Comments: There were 5 of us on our trip to Honolulu. We enjoyed our stay at Karen's place. Edgar was also there and was entertaining and blessed us with his golden voice. The cottage was very comfortable with everything we needed. At night even without air conditioning, the cool breeze and rain was so pleasant and were able to rest well for our next adventure! Overall, two thumbs up and I highly recommend the cottage for groups or families traveling to Honolulu.:-)

Comments: Our stay with Karen was perfect. Edgar was great at check in. The beds were comfy, the room was clean and it was in a beautiful, quiet location yet near to downtown & Waikiki (if that's you're thing). She put together a great informational package with maps to local destinations. I'd definitely stay here again.

Comments: The transactions was great! 1. When booking, we received a response within a few hours. Things went very smoothly 2. When we arrived, our plane was delayed 3 hours, so we ended up arriving at 1230AM vs 930PM. Edgar (who was hosting during our stay) made it very easy for us by leaving the place open, and to our surprise he was still awake to greet us and welcome us. 3. Edgar was a great Host. Very friendly, sociable, and easy going. He gave us a very warm welcome and made sure we knew all the resources that we had at the place, then he respectfully gave us our space while making sure that we had access to him whenever needed via phone. 4. The place was as listed. I really liked our room. Its unique in that when the glass windows are opened, it almost feels like you are outside. 5. Edgar and Karen were very gracious in letting us stay until 7PM on the last night, as our flight out was not till later in the evening. Thanks for a great stay, would highly recommend!

Comments: Lucky was very welcoming. The cottage was sparkling clean and comfortable. I was dreading not having AC but found out that the cottage has many windows and the breeze was wonderful. She also had several fans available. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. On a personal note, I'd like to say that Sunny (Lucky's pup) is one cute doggie!

Her cottage is extremely comfortable, with two roomy bedrooms with comfortable queen beds. Central living area with couch, eating area and full kitchen.

Comments: Clean and convenient. Quiet residential neighborhood. It's behind the main house where the Quantam Institute for Hollistic Health is run so there were lots of towels for our large group staying the night before our flight back to the mainland. I wish there was air conditioning but it wasn't too bad with the fans after sunset. Thanks, Karen, for accommodating us!

Comments: Initially, the absence of AC made our group wonder if we had made the right decision, but all of our doubt was washed away by Lucky's charm. Her warm hospitality, generous amenities, and authentic atmosphere makes her place the ideal stay to enjoy a real Hawaiian experience. Also, the guest house has plenty of windows that allow for a refreshing breeze throughout the day. Overall, this is a decent place with an even better host that will ensure that you enjoy your trip.

Comments: Working with Karen was easy. She made personal contact immediately when we arrived and also before we arrived email contact was quick and easy. The house is nice and comfortable. The master suite was particularly nice. Please note that the house has two bedrooms and a sleeping couch in the living area, but is more deigned to accommodate 4 people. All rooms had windows that allowed a breeze throughout the day and there were fans. We enjoyed the location as it was close to a shopping centre for groceries and breakfast and dinner options. The neighbourhood was very peaceful and quiet. Bottom line, we enjoyed our stay and would recommend the rental to family, friends and strangers alike, but up to 4 people. Thanks, Karen, for accommodating us.

Comments: Great place to land after a long flight with tired kids. Even on a hot summer night this place is very comfortable due to excellent fans and breezy valley location. No curtains, so be prepared to wake with the sun. But that's what you should do in Hawaii, so just run with it. :) Would definitely stay there again. Lovely host. Mahalo!

Comments: We thoroughly enjoyed staying at the Cosy Cottage. We particularly enjoyed the feeling of being 'at home' that it generates; having all the bits and pieces around us that we might need made for an easy holiday with two young children. The area is great; next door to the Uni campus with plenty of opportunities for walking and picnics, walking distance to a good shopping centre, excellent Thai (Bangkok Chef), good sandwich shop (Andy's) and the fabulous Boulangerie (try their Wagyu sandwich - yum!). We enjoyed feeling part of the local community rather than one of the teeming tourist crowd in Waikiki. We would stay here again, and will recommend it to our friends. Oh, and the beds were really comfortable and we enjoyed a lovely cool breeze during our stay.

Comments: I didn't get to meet Karen in person but her communication was very friendly and welcoming, and she was flexible with check in and check out times which is always appreciated. I recommend doing the walk to Manoa Falls which is in the area and is very lush and beautiful. Karen's cottage is not 'new' or ' trendy' so if that is what you looking for then this would not be the place for you. If you are after basic accommodation away from the bustle of Honolulu but still within a short drive then Karen's cottage does the job.

Comments: Karen was very friendly and accommodating. She provided ample information and great communication before, during, and after our trip. The location was very convenient and the cottage had a great cozy feeling. It was a bit hot (mid November) and there were a lot of bugs, but both are to be expected with the geographic location of the listing deep in manoa valley.

Comments: The house was very cozy, tidy, and quaint. There were extra towels and blankets for us, and the owner was kind enough to have left some essentials for our use in the refrigerator and cupboards. She also offers us the use of the shower in her own house for our convenience. The location is great, in beautiful Manoa valley but a short trip to downtown, Waikiki, and the airport. Overall, the house was too small for our group of six, but would be great for 2-5 people.

It is a very clean, well maintained and comfortable place to stay in the best neighborhood on Oahu.

Comments: We had such a wonderful time in Lucky's Cottage. here are my take aways from our experience: 1) Location was ideal. Close to the motorway that took us everywhere we planned. 2) The Cottage was very clean, well maintained, well stocked with all needs (and more), very bright, and very peaceful. One thing to note is that we encountered a few bugs and a lizard that came out to greet us the four evenings we were there. Although it is understandable given the location is really close to the mountains and nature. It would be difficult to repel all critters. 4) Karen was terrific in communication and we felt we could have asked anything and would be looked after for if needed. 5) When we get the chance to visit Hawaii again, we would definitely request to stay in the same location. This is a hard gem to come by and would recommend anyone to lodge in this location. Thank you Lucky!

Comments: I really enjoyed how there was an open door policy at Cottage. We showed up late but walked right in to this charming cottage, with linen and even food in the fridge. We had access to the front house s kitchen and bathroom if needed. People were checking in and out smoothly and friendly. We were rehearsing our lines and competeing for shows at the university s for Kennedy Center Theatre Fest. we had other actors visiting and we even rented Popeds she has parking in front of the house on the lawn. She is warm and genuine I enjoyed the whole Island Vibe.

Comments: This is a little granny cottage behind a home in a residential district. You will need a rental car or a scooter to go to the beach and other areas. The cottage is small but comfortable. There is everything you need in there for an extended stay, including a stove, microwave and a full size refrigerator. The kitchen is fully stocked with plates, silverware, etc. There are plenty of towels and extra blankets if you need them. The unit is spacious enough if you have kids and can accommodate a family comfortably. It's an older home so don't expect luxury accommodations but it's perfectly nice for the price and the hosts (Karen and her son) are very attentive if you need anything. The main benefit for us was that there is a washer and dryer on site that we can use right outside the unit, and Karen is nice enough to provide laundry soap and everything else you need at no charge. There is also a clothesline outside if you want to hang your towels or swimsuits to air-dry, which we did several times. Between going to the beach every day and all the sweaty days, we did laundry three times and it was a blessing to have clean clothes the whole time we were in Oahu.

Comments: Great location, away from busy Waikiki and the city, but still a close drive to many of the places you are likely to go to on that side of the island. The place itself fit 7 of us comfortably. She had two extra air mattresses for us to use, though we only used one (blowing up two would have taken up a lot of space). There is no A/C (so far, a common theme in the Hawaiian Airbnbs we've stayed in so far), but it is very cool in the evening, night, and early morning. We were about there island during the hot times of the day, so no A/C was no problem. The cottage is on the same property as the two-story house, so while the cottage is private, it is a shared property. Still, we never saw any of the other guests on property except when parking. I would have no problem staying here again.

Comments: This cozy cottage was perfect for my 4-day, 5-night stay in Honolulu. It was clean, well supplied (plenty of fresh towels, dishes, etc) and the bed is comfortable. I loved falling asleep to the intermittent Manoa rain, and waking up to the birds. The cottage is situated in the backyard, which is a lovely location--you'll be surrounded by green! The neighborhood is absolutely beautiful. I loved to take walks in the morning and evening in this quiet space. The cottage is a 7-minute walk from the Manoa Marketplace, which is a perfect spot to stock up on some groceries, get a slice of pizza, or take advantage of the amazing farmer's market on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays. With guidance from Karen's informative binder, I even walked from the cottage to the Manoa Falls. When I wasn't exploring the neighborhood or surrounding area, I was at a conference at the university. I was so excited to realize that I could access campus across the street from the cottage! At first I didn't even realize campus was *right there* since it's such a quiet area. I highly recommend Karen's cottage, especially if you need to be on campus and want to avoid the high-traffic tourism near the beach.

Comments: Booking with Karen for the 2nd time and there will be for sure a 3rd time. This house is just perfect for everybody who needs to be close to UH , but still not too far away from Waikiki or other "important" places in Honolulu.

Comments: Our stay at the cottage was wonderful. Lucky is an awesome host, she's helpful an if you need or have any questions she's a call or txt away. The cottage itself is very local kine Hawaii. Centered out in Manoa behind UH. Still close to tourist attractions if that's what you're looking for but tucked away for quiet, peace & tranquility. Birds chirping in the am light showers. Along with super comfy beds. We loved an enjoyed our stay. Can't wait to return :)

Comments: Karen's cottage was perfect for my family of 5 adults and 1 child, plenty of sleeping. Privacy and parking were big for us, as well as internet. Neighborhood was quiet, loved that it rained every night and had nice breeze flowing through. Grocery/coffeeshop were nearby. Neighborhood was perfect to go running or walking, with a popular waterfall less than 3mi away. She had all the gear for snorkeling and beach. Karen was available if we needed anything during our 10day stay.

Comments: My parents enjoyed Karen's cottage very much. There was even a duck family that visited the back of the cottage daily, which was really amusing. The cottage was very clean and equipped with almost everything necessary. The cottage is secluded in the back of the main house and is very quite except the sounds of nature. The two beds are very comfortable and could easily fit four people nicely. There are many places to eat and shop within walking distance. Although there is traffic during peak hours, Karen's place is at the beginning of Manoa Valley so you can get in and out quite fast even with traffic. Overall this is a great place to stay. Thank you Karen!

Comments: This is a very local place. Easy in and out and SUPER affordable. But maybe more for someone who has been to Hawaii. Bring your own soap and shampoo. Better if you have a car. Also has fans, but no central air. Spacious. No TV. We enjoyed it.

Comments: The place was older but still very clean kids loved the bright green lizards every where. And the sound of the pond outside was beautiful. Didn't have aircon but with the fans and all the windows didn't even miss it. Was a bit far for no car and three young kids but with a car would of been great.

Comments: This is a nice place if you want to stay away from the noise of the city. The marketplace is about a 10 minute walk away and the city is 15 mins away by cab. The beach is close to the city than it is to Pamoa Road. The host is great. There's a certain good vibe to this place

Comments: Very comfortable stay for all 5 of us. The house was equipped with everything we could've needed and the neighborhood was nice and quiet. Uber trips were relatively cheap for trips to the beach and close restraunts but renting a car for us ended up working better.

Comments: The cottage is just as described... Suited our Ohana of 6 just right. Peaceful nights, you'll wake up to birds singing, bright and airy during the day with lots of fans, convenient kitchen and laundry right out side. Location is fabulous...beautiful Manoa valley! No one bothered us at all, we felt at home:). Mahalo Lucky, you were a fabulous host! We look forward to another visit!

Comments: A cottage in Manoa Valley was the perfect alternative to the expensive & crowded Waikiki hotels. Manoa Valley is a wonderful neighborhood right next to Honolulu. Can't say enough about the location. The cottage has enough privacy and amenities to take out the worry of staying outside of the known value of staying at a a major hotel chain. If you are looking for a TV and being right in the heart of Waikiki shopping and beach then this is not for you. My only regret is not having more time to spend, but certainly not a knock against Karen's cottage.

It is a very quiet yet convenient location with lots to do and see. We are thankful that we were blessed with such a great place and people ( Thornton family) to help us! Highly recommend this cozy cottage! The Lewandowski Family

Comments: Karen was very accommodating for our large group. We arrived earlier than expected and she made sure the home was super clean before we arrived. Her home is located behind the main house so it provides a touch of privacy. The neighborhood is peaceful and parking is more convenient than it is in downtown.

Comments: This was a wonderful place to stay! The location was extremely convenient! It made it easy to get around and visit friends and favorite places. The garden space around the cottage was beautiful -- full of greenery and flowers! This also meant lots of birds and birdsong - which we loved! Communications before and during our stay were prompt and clear. The cottage had everything we needed to be comfortable. The only reason we did not write "exceeded expectations" is that we already had very high expectations, based on the ad. We hope to be able to return.

Comments: My 5 year old daughter and I rented the cottage for a few days while visiting family on Oahu. The cottage is large and comfortable and a great place for kids. My daughter loved looking in the fish pond and at the avocado tree. It was very easy to find, to check in, and most importantly very quiet for sleeping. Lucky is kind and super laid back and very responsive. If you want a nice place away from the craziness of Waikiki this is a fabulous option.

Comments: I loved this area -- Manoa is fantastic and fairly close to central Honolulu/beaches (10-20 minutes depending on traffic). Nice mountain (mauka) views. Karen is very kind and check-in was a breeze. She is flexible (early check in is possible) and is communicative. The neighborhood has many UH students but is quiet. This is a typical 'local' house complete with shutters and some clutter (not a deal-breaker for us but may bother those leaning OCD.) This is Manoa, meaning there are bugs/ants and you will need to put everything in the fridge and might need bug spray. (We didn't.) There are plenty of outdoor toys for kids, and a koi pond. If you have adventurous young child or are a free-range parent, know that there are breakable items in the cottage and some cleaning containers and the like are in an open area under the main house (the cottage itself is fine.) My 4-year-old was perfectly safe on the property and enjoyed the trees. I enjoyed the cottage, the rain (this is the rainforest area of Honolulu), the environment. I used the washer/dryer and it was great, even removed some stains.

Comments: Great location. Not far drive or moderate walk to Waikiki. Quiet neighborhood away from the busier tourist scene of Waikiki. Close to shops (Safeway, Starbucks, Gas station, restaurants and take outs) and local attractions(Manoa falls/Lyon abortoreum) (Website hidden by Airbnb) Cottage has all the necessary amenities and extras required for a comfortable stay. Nice comfortable beds. Running hot water. Access in and out of cottage was hassle free. Lucky was always nearby or there to help and assist. Adult group of five enjoyed our stay.

Comments: This was a perfect place for my 'young' adult children (19-26 yo) to stay while visiting family in Hawaii. Very welcoming. Everything you need groceries/pharmacy/café are all within walking distance. It's like staying with an auntie--very much a home. A car is very useful. We loved staying with Lucky and will return.

Comments: We absolutely loved Karen’s place. Having stayed at the hyatt, doubletree, embassy suites and the likes in waikiki, i can say we’d much rather stay at karen’s place. Unlike the draining atmosphere of a hotel, where the AC never quite works, the elevator shaft is on the other side of the wall, or the neighbors next door have a 4am departure and keep banging doors, karen’s place is serene, breezy, and at night you can listen to the rain and breathe the ginger fragrant air. For a family of 3-4 it is just perfect. Parking is very convenient and free (unlike the $37/day in waikiki) and you are in the sought after manoa valley, with a few restaurants, a nice farmer’s markey, and a starbucks and a bakery so many japanese tourists must visit and take pics of (why?! Because i did see them all the time doing just that, there must be some historical importance to the place). The towel supply is ample, the shower pressure strong, and karen is a lovely host. If you are lucky and the place is available, do not hesitate, stay there! We stayed in late July and were not bothered in the least by the lack of AC, because the place is so airy and breezy.

Comments: Life in the Manoa valley is beautiful - fall asleep to gentle rains every evening, and wake up to the sound of tropical birds each morning! Karen's home is right next to the University of Hawai'i Manoa, which meant the perfect place to go running each morning. While the street she is on is quite quiet, the home is also close by to a small mall full of great restaurants, too.

Comments: It was nice to have a functional space in Manoa, which was a quiet and comfortable neighborhood. The space was well-stocked with towels, dishes, etc., and the shared laundry was helpful. If you are bringing a lot of people on a budget, it could work nicely. However, the space was pretty run-down. The fold-out couch did not fold back properly and was terrible for seating. Veneer in the kitchen (and particleboard under the counter) were peeling and crumbling. A couple of louvers of glass in the lanai windows were missing. The fridge was old and rusty and tempermental about closing properly. There was a smoke detector mouting bracket, but the smoke detector was missing. The kitchen/living area lighting was a couple of overhead fluorescent tube fixtures. The chairs on the patio were indoor upholstered style and kinda moldy. These kinds of problems made the space unpleasant to hang out in when we weren't sleeping. On the plus side, the beds and the sleeping area were comfortable, and the garden outside was lush. And again, the space was probably capable of hosting many people in a functional way. But for the price we paid, it was disappointing to have a space that was poorly maintained.

Comments: I stayed a Karen's 10 nights in February. I had to work at the University of Hawaii which is a just a few minutes away from Karen's so the location in that sense was perfect. The space is very comfortable, has all the amenities I needed, and the garden absolutely delightful to rest on. I found Manoa also a very nice neighbourhood. I will definitively stay again if my travels bring me back to o'hahu.
