Great host and he lives with great people that really open their home to you. Be ready for a little hike up the stairs/hill to the house :-P

  Comments: The stay with Axel was great. His house is very nice and at the top of a calm and safe favela. From the terrace you have a great view over Rio with the sugar loaf in front of you. The house is not far away from the restaurants and bars of Santa Theresa. To Copacabana it is about half an hour by bus. Axel is also very friendly and helpful. I can definitely recommend this place.

  Comments: Living there (I stayed for 5 weeks in the front corner room, second floor) was such a wonderful experience! The view is beyond amazing. The life in/on top of a favela was very interesting and really something special (experiencing the day to day life around you etc) and never in any way dangerous. The house, the place is full of life. You´ll meet wonderful people, maybe find yourself in the middle of a samba party or will be able to experience many cool Rio things the owners of the place will bring you along with. The owners are very nice, very concerned about your well-being, about making this place your home. They will assist you if you need help or some cool tips where to go to, what to do in Rio. Of course, this is not the Hilton (thank God!): There may come a day when it´s a little loud (music in the house or some party in the favela), or when the kitchen may be a little all over the place - but this is temporary and makes it all feel even more like living together with friends instead of staying anonymously in one of the hotel towers in Copacabana. I personally never felt unhappy with conditions or situations. Best proof of my happiness at Casa48: I´ll come back next year :-)

  Comments: Axel and Rafael were great hosts! The place was clean, the service was very good (ie: breakfast) and the view was stunning. The area they live in (on top of a little favela, but easily accessible by road passing by the top) felt very safe and secure, and most of all friendly. We would definitely stay there again!

When making the reservation, I made a mistake on the days that we were going to be there but Axel was extremely flexible and was able to move some things around in order to accommodate us on dates close to NYE when reservations have already been secured. He also made sure to check in with me before the trip to ensure that all my questions were answered. When we got there, Axel made sure we were comfortable and provided us breakfast which we didn't expect, so that was a great surprise! Since he's also a tour guide, he gave us great tips on places to go and check out. He also took us to check out the local Brazilian samba party scene and introduced us to his visiting friends. I also had 2 friends who stayed longer that didn't have a reservation, but Axel was able to help them secure a place to stay! Overall, I would definitely recommend his place to stay - great view, good location, and awesome host!

Many good tips on where and how to go to different places in Rio, we got invited to parties (most amazing New Years Eve in a favela nere Leme), sama school practice and nice BBQ:s french/brazilian style. :) The house is great but a bit dirty, the view is fantastic and the fact that it is situated in a favela in Santa Teresa is absolutely nothing to worry about! Me and my two friends had a great time at Axels & Rafaels Casa 48. I would recommend it!

  Comments: We had a great stay at Axel's.... If you want to see Rio in a different light.... then this is your place! The view, of course, is incredible and staying here is an experience we won't forget! Basic accomodation but perfect for the young adventurous traveller! Axel was very helpful with informing us on what to do in the city and how to get around. He also helped us with Carnvale tickets and took us to some great parties which we really appreciated. The place was full when we stayed which created a really nice atmosphere, would definately recommend to anyone visiting Rio! :)

  Comments: Wow! Axel's casa is located in the beautiful Santa Teresa, with the most amazing views of Rio, day and night. Axel is a wonderful host, particularly as I caused a few problems in arriving late and then being the victim of a robbery - Axel, unasked, loaned me money while I got myself sorted out, and was very caring. His casa is only a hair-raising, death-defying 10 minute bus ride from the centre of Rio, so perfectly located. The streets of Santa Teresa are beautiful, well worth walking around, and Axel's casa is within easy travelling distance of the tourist attractions of Cristo Redentor, Copacabana beach and all the city buildings. Sadly, many of the buildings are closed for repair for World Cup 2014 and the Olympic Games 2016, but there is still plenty to see. A little warning: Axel is currently undertaking renovations at his casa, so you must be prepared for some building work to go on around you - but all the guys are really friendly. If you need 5-star quiet, your own everything and cleanliness - Axel's is not the place. If, however, you want to see the real Rio, live in a favela (safety is not a problem), have a wonderful host and meet lots of people of all different nationalities (there were 5 different languages being spoken a few nights ago!!), then you will love Axel's casa. Thank you Axel for a wonderful 10 days - I think your casa is fantastic and it will be absolutely wonderful when you have finished your renovation. Melinda, Olinda, Australia

  Comments: D'abord, la maison d'Axel est idéalement située. Dans les hauteurs de la ville (il faut aimer marcher!), après une journée dans la chaleur, la foule et le bruit, il est bon de s'y poser, au frais et au calme, avec une vue SPLENDIDE. Un bémol toutefois: il faut s'habituer au survol des avions! Ensuite, Axel est un hôte prévenant, à l'écoute et attentif à ce qu'on lui demande. En plus d'être un gentil hôte, il est également guide, et ses compétences professionnelles valent la peine d'être utilisées pour découvrir Rio autrement. Nous précisons que nous sommes la première famille à aller passer un séjour chez lui. Nos enfants de 9 et 10 ans ont adoré, tout comme nous, ces réveils et ces soirées sur cette belle terrasse et dans cette pièce lumineuse et spacieuse, où colibris, papillons divers et même toucan - promis! passent de temps en temps. Nous n'avons jamais eu peur ni ne nous sommes sentis en insécurité, ni chez Axel ni dans la favela! Bref, c'est une adresse que nous recommandons à tout ceux qui aiment la nature...

  Comments: I had a great time staying with my boyfriend at Axel's place. Axel is a very cool and fun host! He shared with us his experience about Rio and gave us a lot of great tips! Besides, we had the opportunity to do a tour of two different favelas with him, and on another day he brought us to a beautiful, wild and natural beach in Rio from where we watched then an amazing sunset. I highly recommend to stay at the Casa 48, you will definitely not regret it. Staying in a favela was such an interesting and positive experience. We enjoyed living in an authentic way, close to local people, in the lovely Santa Teresa. The description and the photos on AirBnB reflect very well how the house is, and the view over Rio is really breath-taking! :)

  Comments: Maison idéalement située pour la vue panoramique. Tout confort, internet wi-fi, bonne aération, pas vraiment besoin de climatisation (toiture renouvelée isole contre la chaleur), pas de moustiques. Très bonne ambiance entre les locataires, accueil impeccable et chaleureux. Loin de la plage mais excellentes liaisons de bus vers tout autre partie de la ville, aussi la nuit. En plus, Axel connait sur Rio plein de choses qui ne figurent dans aucun guide touristique. Bref, j'y retourne dès que je peux. Merci, Axel!!

  Comments: Axel's guest house is a fantastic place, the best one we could expect to have an authentic experience of Rio : the building is at the top entrance of a small and totally secure favela with a breathtaking view of the bay and Pao de Azucar ! So great favela neighbors, great mix of people inside Axel's building with a good atmosphere among the various inhabitants.   Comments: Hi Everyone! First time in Rio and start my first days at the casa 48 was the best decision ever! Axel is a very kind ans sweet host. The view from the Casa 48 is so amazing! Axel always gives you very good and helpful tips to visit and spend good nights listening brazilian music, dancing and so on.... The favela is safe, I was feeling so good and people are very nice. You have absolutely to visit "Projetto Morrinho"! You can go from Axel House in the favela and also test the curry club organised by Tom (one of the roomates of Axel) every wednesday at the Casa 48. To sum up from a french woman who lives in Paris : not going to Axel House in Rio is the same as not going to visit Eiffel Tower or The Louvre Museum when you go to Paris! So enjoy your stay guys!   Comments: This was one of the best places I have ever stayed in, the view never disappoints and the apartment is really cool and spacious. The area it's located in was so interesting and everyone around us was so helpful and nice. We were invited to local curry nights, and Axel and his friends always invited us to join them on a night out. Seriously if you're looking to stay and do something a little different than the usual touristy things stay here!! You'll gain some cool new experiences and be surrounded by great company. Axel provides us with heaps of cool info about the city and where to go what to do etc. santa Teresa it's self is a really beautiful suburb to stay In as well. Stay here !!

  Comments: We spent an amazing week at Axel Home . The view from the apartment is even more beautiful than pictures. In addition, Axel allowed us to experience the real life of favelas. The apartment is ideally located for visiting Rio. Buses for center run every 10 minutes. Interaction and meetings with people passing by casa for a drink made the success of our stay. If you are looking for an idyllic place with all the comfort and tranquility, look for elsewhere. This house is coherent with its environment. If you want to feel a little "carioca", this is the right place.

  Comments: I'm unsure how best to review this property. We really enjoyed our stay with Axel, him and the other housemates are very friendly and helpful, the view from the house was amazing and the favela it's in is very safe. However, we were disappointed to find out upon arrival that there was a lot of building work going on. Axel said he was unable to tell us as the internet wasn't working two days prior to our arrival but I don't understand why we were not told around the time we made the booking, we exchanged several emails and it was never mentioned. There was quite a lot of work going on so I doubt they expected it all to be finished. The building work meant that we were unable to use the main floor of the property or enjoy the terrace (we were allowed but it wasn't that enjoyable being surrounded by building tools and with the sounds of drilling or hammering in the background). It would have been nice to have been warned in advance or even to have been offerd a slight discount as it probably wasn't worth full rate in that condition. Otherwise though, the house was great, I'm sure it will be amazing when all the work is done. Our room was lovely, We especially enjoyed the full length window in front of the shower in the ensuite with the view over the city. The kitchen was quite basic and I saw a few mice but we were able to cook just fine, and they had most appliances we needed. Some mornings Axel made us breakfast which was a lovely touch. I would recommend this property but I would urge you to check that there is no building work going on first as I'm not sure if we would have stayed if we had known.

Une expérience où quand vous rentrerez chez vous, vous en parlerez pendant des heures à vos amis? En y postant sur (Hidden by Airbnb) des photos incroyables? Et bien vous ne serez pas déçu par la Casa 48, où j'y ai passé 5 nuits très agréables. Je ne suis absolument pas d'accord avec les commentaires négatifs précédents, c'est sûr qu'en venant en haut d'une favela à un tel prix, il ne faut pas s'attendre à avoir un petit déjeuner 4 étoiles, sinon aller au Copacabana Palace. Celui était très correct, tout comme les sanitaires et la cuisine fonctionnelle. La WiFi fonctionne même mieux que chez moi. J'y ai passé un séjour très agréable, les travaux étaient minimes, l'accueil était chaleureux et sincère, Axel m'a donné pleins de bons plans et m'a permis de vivre une expérience inoubliable à Rio, grâce à ses conseils. Il s'est montré très disponible et toujours de bonne humeur. En plus, on y rencontre d'autres touristes et locaux, on y partage ses expériences. La vue est splendide sur le Pain de Sucre, l'accès est simple, le quartier est vivant - c'est le vrai Rio, loin du côté superficiel qu'offre d'autres quartiers - bien situé (bus en bas de la favela, ensuite 15 min de copacabana). Hello dear future hosts of the casa 48 (hopefully for you) , are you ready for a great carioca's experience? An experience where when you get home , you talk for hours to your friends? By posting amazing pictures on (Hidden by Airbnb) ? Well, you will not be disappointed by the Casa 48 , where I spent 5 nights very pleasant. I'm not absolutely agree with the previous negative reviews, it is certain that from the top of a favela at this price , don't expect to have a "breakfast 4 stars" , otherwise go at the "Copacabana Palace" ! . He was very correct, like bathroom and kitchen. WiFi works even better than my home. I spend nice holidays here, build was very minimal, the welcome was warm and sincere , Axel gave me a lot of goods plans and allowed me to live an unforgettable experience in Rio , thanks to his advice. He was very helpful and always cheerful . In addition , we meet other tourists and locals , there sharing his experiences. Great views of the Pao Acuçar, access is simple. This is the real Rio , away from the side surface offered other neighborhoods - location ( bus down the favela then 15 minutes from copacabana ) . Absolutely an experience here , in all humility and simplicity. You will not be disappointed. Obrigado Axel !

  Comments: Casa 48 was exactly what I was looking for when searching a place to stay in Rio through airbnb. I lived ten days in Axel's place and had a great time. The house and the view (!) were exactly like in pictures. Axel and his housemates were friendly and helpful. The neighborhood was really nice and safe. Even as a single female traveller I never felt unsafety while walking down to the downtown (Laranjeiras district) through the favela. I cannot understand why so many travel guides recommend turist areas like Copacabana when you have options like this!

  Comments: Staying at Axel's is a generational thing. As a Boomer, I was the oldest person in what I'd characterize as a youth hostel. If a hotel room cleaned by a maid, air conditioning, and personal privacy is your thing, Axel's casa probably isn't your gig. However, the young people there couldn't have been nicer. Six or seven of us strolled down the street to a terrific restaurant in the Santa Teresa neighborhood. I would never have gone there own my own. I also took the public bus downtown, truly an experience not to be missed. But the highlight was Valentin and one of the guests taking me down the steep hill into the favela. I felt perfectly safe, but for travelers who are skittish about poor neighborhoods, this may not be your preference. All in all, Axel's place is for hearty travelers who don't mind some inconveniences. If that's you, look forward to a great time.

  Comments: Axel est très accueillant et connaît vraiment bien sa ville et la région. Un caipirini à la main, il est une source infini d'informations précieuses pour apprécier Rio et pour s'en échappé le moment venu. La grande salle commune de la maison invite aux échanges, les chambres sont telles que sur les photos et confortables et la vue est à rêver. Rester plus longtemps aurait rendu notre séjour parfait! :)

  Comments: The view from the veranda and the location are amazing! Valentim left some breakfast, fresh fruit, coffee, water and milk. He was also really helpful: gave us a map and some indications. The house is well set. The rooms are simple but most of them with big windows and great view. Really nice to chill on the veranda in the evening. We definitely recommend it, especially for big groups (the living room has a big table that fits easily 8 people).

  Comments: Nous n'avons pu passé qu'une nuit à la casa 48 mais nous aurions vraiment aimé rester beaucoup plus longtemps. Le cadre est beau, l'ambiance est chaleureuse et la vue de la terrasse est magnifique (idéal pour prendre un petit déjeuner ensoleillé). Axel et Valentin sont très agréables et ont de très bons conseils pour vivre à Rio. En bref tout est génial, on vous le recommande. Merci à vous deux.

  Comments: Staying at Casa 48 is a unique way to experience Rio and will give you access to much more than what is in your guidebook! The house is great and the view is breathtaking. The rooms are comfortable and everything is very clean. Everything explained in the ad about the location is 100% accurate: all the animation in Santa Teresa is just a short walk away, and the small favela by the house feels totally safe, like a village. Casa 48 is indeed more than just a view. The ambiance is very relaxed and your can share great moments with the hosts and other guests if you want. Finally, Axel is an excellent guide who knows the city like the back of his hand and you will learn a lot if you decide to go on a tour with him. Overall a great experience for your stay in Rio.

L'ambiance aussi dans la Casa 48, on se sent très vite bien, comme à la maison... En plus, Axel est vraiment un hôte super ! Nous ne sommes restés que 2 nuits à Rio, il nous a conseillé sur les choses à voir, et comment y aller, les bons restos... Du coup, on a vraiment pu profiter au maximum ! Je suis sûre qu'on retournera à Rio, et ce sera sans hésiter à la Casa 48 ! On vous le conseille vraiment.

  Comments: Nous avons été très bien reçues par Valentin! Il faisait part aux locataires tous les jours des bons plans sorties du jour! Nous avons eu la chance de loger dans une chambre avec salle de bain et terrasse privée donc royal! La maison est située dans le quartier de Santa Teresa, un village dans la ville, et à 15min en taxi du quartier très animé de Lapa! N'hésitez pas à passer quelques jours dans cette maison. Vous ne regretterez pas!

  Comments: Super schöne Aussicht von allen Zimmern. Hatten das Zimmer mit privatem Balkon und haben unsere Zeit dort sehr genossen. Die Zimmer sind sehr sauber und schön.   Comments: This is a superb Airbnb property. The pictures do not do the view justice, it really has the wow factor for a bargain price. The staff are really helpful, the breakfast is excellent, the bedroom was simple, nice and again an unbelievable view of sugar loaf and the city. The living space is modern and extremely comfortable too. It was the perfect place to wind down our trip in South America. Make sure you go to the local restaurant in the favela, superb food for next to nothing prices. The view is not to be grumbled at either! We highly recommend staying here.

  Comments: A very cozy living, at the very top of a small favela. The view is as everybody else are telling, VERY cool. I liked it very much, because I could really feel the REAL brasilian atmosphere by living up there, instaed of Copacabana for example. It is easy to either go down the favela in 5-6 minutes to get to one part of the town, or, very close, take a cheap bus. The breakfast is totaly okey and I enjoyed it mostly by sitting on the big balcony! I recommend Casa 48 to mostly people, and will surely come back if I am returning to Rio!

  Comments: Спасибо за гостеприимство, уют и комфорт! Особенно нашу любовь заслужила прекрасная трехцветная киса и кайпиринья от мэтра. Ребята были готовы помочь во всем, посоветовали что и где посмотреть, как добраться. Сам дом - отдельная песня. Полностью соответствует фото, иногда даже чуть лучше. В общем, берите, не пожалеете.

  Comments: Thank You Casa 48 My partner and I had an amazing stay. The views are spectacular and the breakfast is great too. Vicente was an amazing host providing us with all of the local tips upon arrival and even escorted us to a nearby restaurant for lunch. Valentin was also helpful. We are already recommending our friends :)

  Comments: Une situation exceptionnelle dans Santa Teresa. Un accueil aux petits soins avec Valentin. Une Pousada superbement aménagée et décorée. Ambiance très décontractée et bien sûr une vue à coupée le souffle sur le Pain de Sucre . Bref, une super adresse ou je retournerai!
