Neighborhood Overview: Hamakua Chocolate Farm is located in Papaikou- a small village just 8 minutes north of Old Town Hilo- on the Big Island of Hawaii. Comments: Berndt and Dan were really fabulous hosts and even invited me to have dinner with them one evening. The mornings were really gorgeous from the sunrise coming up over the ocean at the foot of your bed. The room was immaculate and the bed was really comfortable. They both exceeded my expectations during my stay and I would definitely stay here again if I had the chance. The property has some really lovely architecture and Berndt and Dan are both really great people who are passionate about what they do and sharing their experiences with their guests. All-in-all I had a fantastic 4 day stay here for a work trip and was able to relax and unwind everyday.

Comments: This is not a typical place you imagine finding in Hawaii. The design is modern and somewhat minimalist but spectacular. The views of sunrise from the ocean room every morning were incredible with a view looking down the hill at the chocolate as the pods are ripening from green to cherry red on the branches. There is a pair of red headed Cardinals that seem to think it’s their home and have the outdoor run of the place and they love to say hello multiple times a day jumping around your feet as you sit at the table outside as well as peeking into your window at times to say hello ....then there are the ubiquitous day geckos that are cuter than panda bears peeking out to say hello from corners of the building and on bushes by day and the other cute mourning geckos very loved by Hawaiians at night on the outside walls by the lights. If you’re interested in birds you can sit on the porch and watch many species come by including many native species. it’s lots of fun to watch nature there It was wonderfully quiet being a bit out of the city but a very short drive to Hilo which also was pleasant Dan and Berndt were excellent hosts at every corner for every whim have extremely an interesting backgrounds and are Master gardeners but I have experienced a lot in their lives worldwide. They were also fantastic at giving recommendations for everything imaginable Immaculate premises Beautiful grounds and even better chocolate! no comparison hands down five stars

Comments: Berndt and Dan are very nice people and responsive hosts. The property is beautiful and it’s really cool to walk through their cacao orchard, take a dip in the steam and check out the treehouse. The room you stay in is extremely stylish and very comfortable. The whole experience was special and we would definitely come back.

Comments: Great out of the city place to relax, enjoy great views and the soothing sounds of nature (both babbling brook and singing wildlife). Easy access to Hilo. Felt very welcome. We could have stayed even longer and really chilled out with more chocolate!

Comments: Stay. In. This. Place. I'm going to recommend this place to many many people, so book it up fast! This was my favorite Airbnb stay in a while, and I've stayed in many many Airbnbs. Berndt and Dan were exceptional hosts and their home is one of the most beautiful on the Big Island, I'm sure of it. Do yourself a favor and ask them all about how they came to run a chocolate farm in Hawaii - their life stories are fascinating and I would quite happily have chatted their ear off for hours. Meeting them was an absolute joy. The farm is lovely - with a stream, interesting fruits and spices, as well as the chocolate plants, and even a treehouse that they used to live in while they were designing and building the house. The chocolate farm is just getting up and running but we gratefully sampled chocolates left at the side of our bed and smell the beans roasting in their workroom The sea view room has a huge window that you can leave open without blinds and watch the stars. It has a private entrance and private en-suite so it's definitely more of a guest suite than a private room. You also have access to a kitchen which they use for chocolate prep. Everything is very well designed and stylish, with high end features that shout to Dan's artistic profession. They even left us fresh papaya and avocados just picked from the garden for breakfast - which were so huge we couldn't possibly eat all of. Hilo is much closer than we thought, as are waterfalls, hikes and snorkelling spots. Just ask Berndt or Dan for recommendations - they are big advocates for the responsible tourism and enjoyment of the local area. Mahalo for the stay!

Comments: I was not to visit the Big Island in the first place. The pictures of Berndt and Dan’s chocolate farm, the stunning ocean view, their lovely house in Klein blue and the nice taste interior design, however, made me make the best decision during my holidays in Hawaii this time. Their wonderland is the place to be. Their advice and (the always timely) response lead you to the most beautiful experience here. I will surely be “back” here with my beloved family and friends.

Comments: I just can’t say enough. Our stay at Hamakua was absolutely incredible. Dan and Bernt are wonderful hosts with a wealth of knowledge to share and an inspiring passion for their craft. The room was impeccably clean, the view was to die for, and the grounds were a lovely place to take in the majesty of the big island. I wouldn’t stay anywhere else near Hilo. Highly recommend.

Comments: A beautiful, modern, clean room in a cocoa farm with an ocean view. We can’t asking for more than that. Dan is very generous host, take time to show us his chocolate farm and offered valuable tips for our Hilo stay.

Comments: My girlfriend and I had a great time staying 2 nights in the cacao room at the Hamakua chocolate farm. We love everything about the experience. Book the stay as soon as you can before this place gets too popular. Here is a quick summary of what we like about this place: 1. super new&clean room with ocean-view: while we were looking for a place to stay that is close to Hilo, a lot of the hotels seen old and some Airbnbs look too remote (no bathroom attached). The cacao room really stood out as the room itself is excellent with oceanview. Already missed the feeling of waking up by the morning bird songs and enjoy the sunrise from the cacao room. 2. Modern design farmhouse: The building is a piece of art. It is so interesting to hear the story of constructing the building from Dan and saw the amazing blue lighting while driving back to the farm in the night. 3. The host Dan is friendly and thoughtful: Dan welcomed us to his place with a small bite of chocolate (of course, we are staying on a chocolate farm). We are amazed by all his small but thoughtful surprises: champaign in the fridge (we are celebrating 2 year anniversary), some fruit juice and experimental chocolate flavor popcorn. 4. Chocolate farm tasting experience: we decided to go on his chocolate farm tasting tour. It was great to learn about how chocolate is made, walked around the property, and tasting some delicious chocolate. There are a cool tree house, a swinging bridge, and a river right on the property. Make sure you check that out.

Comments: We had a wonderful stay at Hamakua Chocolate Farm. Dan and Berndt are super hosts! The accommodations are well designed, clean, and comfortable -- incredible attention to detail. Very helpful tips on restaurants, activities. The setting is stunning: a cacao farm on a rushing river. Dramatic beauty is everywhere (including an 7 foot tall heliconia arrangement in our room cut fresh from the garden!). At night, the tropical critters sing their songs, providing a sweet lullaby. We look forward to returning someday.
