Comments: If your looking to view the east rift zones recent lava outbreaks near kalapana then this is the place. Located directly on the access trail to the lava this is a beautiful newly constructed container home with everything you would need.

Comments: Uncle Kalani's place is stellar. The accommodation is spacious and clean with amazing nightly views of the stars and glowing lava landscape. Most visitors are only allowed to view the lava between between the hours of 5-9PM, but since we were staying at Uncle Kalani's place, we were able to see the lava flow anytime we liked - both at night and at sunrise. Uncle Kalani and Aunty Dee were excellent hosts. They were kind and generous in taking great care to explain how to use and operate the house, and for convenience sake, they posted instructions around the house should anybody forget. It was real treat to stay at this airbnb, and I would definitely stay there again. Mahalo nui loa!

Comments: Super convenient to see lava overflow. Best location and very lovely place. The owners are responsive and very helpful. This is the place to stay if you want to watch lava at night or in early morning.

Comments: Beautiful place on the lava, great place to stay!

  • Reviewer: Jenelle

Comments: This is an awesome place to stay if you're in search of lava. The home is beyond the security gate that separates public parking from "resident" access. Since you are staying at the home, you get to drive beyond the gate and park at the house. If you plan to rent bikes or catch a shuttle (as far as they're allowed to take you), you can leave your car parked at the house and walk (less than 5 minutes) to the tour companies. Very convenient. The home itself is great. The shipping container is well designed and very nice. The queen sized bed and twin sized bunk beds are on opposite ends of the same container, so there is definitely not complete privacy in that sense--but a cute room divider makes the queen bed area feel separate and cozy. Couch, table, and chairs are all great. Outside of the container living space, the kitchen area and full bathroom are both located in the covered lanai. We were pleasantly surprised to find that the shower hot water headed-up almost instantly. We had no problems with electricity or water. The upstairs loft is neat, with long, narrow peek-out windows on either side. We could see nighttime lava glow from the front of the house (upstairs and downstairs). There is one little house right next door, and a few others nearby, but you really get the sense of privacy and remoteness. It you are looking for surface lava flow on the Kalapana side, this is definitely where you want to stay! Such a spacious, unique, pleasant place! The location can't be beat. Kalani was a great host, too, with a fast response time whenever we had questions.

Comments: If you want to watch the flowing lava at night... Stay here! It will get u access to the residential road blocked to tourist cars, after the bike rental place. House is comfortable with a nice breeze at night.

  • Reviewer: Karen

Comments: Perfect location for people wanting to check-out the newest lava flow areas. It's very comfortable for a couple or family with kids.

  • Reviewer: Andy

Comments: What a location and unique space. We loved staying here and it made our trip to the lava a fun and enjoyable experience. The communication was great and super helpful and we had everything we needed. The space is both open (very cool kitchen/living room and upper lookout area) and closed) a secure container house section for the bedroom (lots of windows and doors you can open to get the open feel -- just nice knowing it was warmer on the cold night, secure (to lock stuff up, etc). We rented bikes and walked them back to the house (not far) and then went out in the early AM for a hike to the lava (we've been out before and I wouldn't suggest going out in the dark if you haven't -- do a day or sunset hike instead). Lots of laterns and such are provided, but it is solar powered so come with some battery backups to charge your cell phones, etc.

Comments: Everything was great! Pretty cool house (container design and installations) in a unique location (right on the lava field). Communication was perfect, check in smooth and everything easy to understand (explanation labels). If you wanna see the lava don’t hesitate to book your stay here.

Comments: Great place to use as a base or to hang out. We had a wonderful experience and the ambiance and creature comforts were fabulous. Hoping to stay here again. The view of the glow was amazing.

Comments: Beautiful place and a great price! HIGHLY recommend.

Comments: My first time book the Airbnb myself and lesson learned. I should contact the owner through text than calling. The place is clean and lovely and close to the lava trail. The only issue I had with this house is it doesn’t have outlet or the outlet is not easily accessible because it’s hidden behind the refrigerator and I couldn’t charge laptop to get some work done while traveling.

Comments: This is a wonderful mixture of simple living and quality. It is a very open house ... simple veranda type with kitchen and here to a lookout sitting room at first floor. The actual room is a very stillfully equipped cointainer covered in wood walls and beautiful simple furniture. Good beds .. a double ( not US size though) and a broad bunk bed. Both with good mattresses. The shower didn't work, but the bath did. It is placed near by the active lava flow and in a relative new flow where people have started to build new houses huts. It is in safe distance though. It is a good place to start a tour to the visible flow. An advice ,, rent a bike to go there ... it is rather far as by now .. January 2017,

Comments: The Grass Shack Lanai was just what we wanted. We had a few options near the lava fields, but chose this home because of the outdoor space. Our son hoped to put up his hammock, but that wasn’t possible. He was happy to sleep on the bed outside, so all went great. We found the home to be clean and comfortable, the hosts responsive, friendly, and patient with my own Airbnb newbie failings. The water is very hot, so be careful. It does provide for a wonderful hot bath! The coffee the host supplied was really good, but if you want real cream (not powdered), bring your own, they do not store perishables in the refrigerator. A large cooler is available, and a local convenience style store where visitors can purchase ice, sandwiches, beer and wine, fruit, snacks, etc. is not far. There are also food trucks and bike rentals a short distance from the Grass Shack. The Pacific breeze is constant and provides the best cooling system ever! We stayed in January, so overall temperatures were milder than summer. Our family was visiting the area for a sunset lava hike (which was awesome!). We were grateful to have our home away so close to that activity. The road in front can get busy as it is the only way to the lava viewing sites, but it is also restricted so most people are on bikes or foot. We did not find the activity intrusive, even while using the kitchen (which is outside).

Comments: We loved our stay at Kalani's and Deneen's. The space itself was beautiful--most of the common area it's open to the air so you get a nearly 360 view of the surrounding area. The kitchen area, bathroom, and loft were all very well-maintained. The supplies for the kitchen were more than adequate. There were utensils, plates, basics like oil salt and pepper, and a small hot-plate for quick small meals. There was a nice grill that we didn't use (but i wish that we had!). There's a lot of common space--it would be fun for a group of 4 friends or family. The loft especially provides a very nice view. We could see the glow of lava at night like some others have said in their reviews. The location close to the lava viewing area was great as well. We rented bikes to ride out to the beginning of the hike to the active lava flow. We did the hike at night and I would highly recommend it. Make sure you bring extra flashlights and keep an eye on your location so you can find your way back! We would definitely come back with a bigger group!

Comments: This place is a gem. Amazingly designed and built from container. The sleeping space is nice and cozy, the master bed is super comfy and we slept like princesses. The cooking and dining area is sooo big and awesome! We enjoyed the evenings sitting on bar stools and observing people returning from lava viewing point. Then there is bathroom. You can find there beautiful bathtub about which we always dreamed.. Old, classy, with legs <3. And if you go up the stairs, you can enjoy breakfast with perfect view of all surroundings. We enjoyed our stay on maximum. You are off the grid, but still in comfort. And btw., the night sky is unbelievable. I never saw so many stars in my life. Even overflying IS station is visible just by eye. And Kalani is great host, answering questions superquickly and always being kond. Thank you so much for unfergottable experience.

Comments: We truly enjoyed a very peaceful stay on the lava. The house had everything we needed, from LED lamps, hot showers, kitchen amenities to cook warm breakfasts, fridge, binocular. beer opener etc. We could see the lava from the outlook upstairs on our first night! :) The hike to the flowing lava was strenuous about 5.5 hours, but was totally worth it! We recommend to drive the road 137 between Ahalanui and Kalapana - the most beautiful jungle you will ever see! :)

Comments: This place was really cool, loved the rooftop lanai. Everything was as expected or better. If there was more to do around here we would have stayed for at least one more day, but it was perfect for going to see the lava and viewing the lunar eclipse.

Comments: This was a wonderful 3-night stay in a super location for exploring the Kalapana, Pahoa, Puna, Volcano areas. The bike rental is less than 5 min walk from the house which is located on the main road right near the entrance to the neighborhood. Bike for about 3 miles to the end gate and then hike for about an hour over the lava field (no path) towards the lava glow. Bring one or all of the lanterns supplied in the home (very convenient) for the night hike back. Electrical outlet is outside near the fridge for charging of phones, cameras, and the internet supplied jetpack. Bathroom water supply was great. I didn't cook though hot plate and bar-b-que supplied if you wanted to (no microwave). Slept very well in the double bed and enjoyed both the many, many stars at night and the lovely sunrises in the morning from the lanai. Only two suggestions for adding to the fabulous stay at this beautiful tiny home: (i) some directions explaining where the jetpack and bathroom key are stored and how to use the jetpack would be helpful, though after a text to Kalani and quick response all was figured out; and (ii) adding more curtains in the home and bathroom since the location of the home is near the road and other homes. There are many dips in the dirt road once the paved road ends so I was glad to have the Jeep. Enjoyed the convenience store near Uncle Roberts for supplies as well as the dining options in Pahoa (about 20 min or so drive from neighborhood). An hour drive to the volcano park and the Red Road Drive can start at the painted church not far from leaving the neighborhood on 130. Would highly recommend this home.

Comments: Hands down made our trip to the big Island. Sad we couldn’t stay longer...Kalani made the effort to come meet us and show us the ropes and give some local tips. Really cool dude that built the place himself...such a cool space. You can see lava from the main bed and most common spaces. Already trying to figure out how to get back...book with confidence.

Comments: Even if you have only 1 night to enjoy the wonders of lavaland, the GrassShack Lanai was a perfect choice for this adventure. A newer shipping container home has all the components of being practical, luxurious, eco-friendly, along with added historic Hawaiian touches. The open kitchen with a large deck and porch swing were so enjoyable, and the upstairs observation deck can't be beat!

Comments: We were seeking a unique experience, and we certainly got it. We arrived in the dark after a very long day of traveling from Florida then driving from Kona. It was pitch black and a bit difficult to figure out which house was the one as the side lights on the house weren't lit...and we were so tired. We awoke to such an incredible view and could even see the glow of lava from the porch at night. We loved the place and would definitely recommend to everyone.

Comments: Great place to stay if you plan to hike/bike into the lava viewing area. House had everything we needed to make our stay comfortable. Kalani and Dee were very quick to respond to any questions we may have had and checked in with us throughout our stay to see if we needed anything else. If you're looking for a unique place to stay this is it on the big island.

Comments: Upon our arrival, we were welcomed by such a beautiful space we had a hard time leaving for our lava adventure! We easily rented bikes and hiked in to find amazing flowing lava, it was a first for us and quite an experience! Eager to get back the cabin, we found it very easy to cook a full dinner, take a warm shower and rest very well:) the chocolates were very much enjoyed! We woke up to a beautiful sunrise and delicious coffee. All the sweet little touches were very much appreciated. Would love to stay here again in the future!

  • Reviewer: Jennifer

Comments: This place is awesome. The opportunity to stay on a lava flow is a once in a lifetime experience. The layout is unique and we were able to see lava glow in the distance both nights. This does have a little bit of a glamping flair due to the more limited resources but it was well worth it.

  • Reviewer: Jennifer

Comments: Wow!!!! What an amazing and incredible place to stay! If you are looking at this rental don’t waste anymore time and book it right now!! The location has to be number one for the lava hike! You are literally on the trail to it and no public can get in that far until you rent a bike or get in a shuttle. We walked off the steps and got right on a shuttle to the end of the road where we started our adventure to the lava. If your not a hiker and want to see the lava there are amazing views right from the front lanai and upper room!!! At night we could see the river of lava coming down and the glow of the crater!! There were six of us (4 adults and 2 kids) and we all fit comfortably. All amenities were thought of and we felt right at home. It is like indoor outdoor living at its best! Kalani and his wife were so amazing and kept in contact with us prior to our stay. Everything we needed was ready for us upon arrival including local macadamia chocolates and snacks. We only wished we would have stayed longer!! Warmest mahalo Kalani!! Can’t wait to come back! Jenny & Krystal (Kona) Sara, Ryan, Jack, & Drew (St. Louis)

Comments: Great location and nice open layout. Close to bike rental and road to get to lava flow. Could see the orange flow from the kitchen. Place is off grid but had plenty of lighting and basic necessities for cooking. Had some wonderful macadamia treats for our arrival.

  • Reviewer: Eve

Comments: This was a unique, off-the-grid experience. The Grass Shack Lanai has its own power & water systems, and they all worked beautifully. The location is really special. We could see the glowing lava from the lanai at night. Definitely not something we get to do everyday. We also appreciated the thoughtful extras like chocolate-covered macadamia nuts and the bubbler of bottled water.

Comments: Perfect place to stay for your visit to see the lava and area black sand beach. The breeze through out the open Lani is amazing. The views of the flowing lava and stars at night is wonderful! Highly recommend renting the electric bikes to ride to the end of the road for your hike up...it makes going back to the Lani a breeze!

Comments: Your place is absolutely amazing. We spent the evening sitting on your lanai gazing at the stars and tiny glows of lava. We took a walk around your backyard and neighborhood. The lava rock is so fascinating to look at. We loved your stairway up to the rooftop bedroom. The view from there was great. We loved the "open feeling" of your home. Thank you for all the goodies and box of macadamia nut chocolates. We definitely would love to come back and stay longer.

  • Reviewer: Ryan

Comments: Great stay. No issues at all getting past nighttime security to the house. Could see lava (long ways off) at night and more so in the morning you could see the steam coming off the cooling lava. Did not make the trek down the road on bike/foot as we had kids not quite ready for that yet. Would be the perfect jumping off spot to do so. Accessing the house was very easy with excellent directions provided.

Comments: Great place to stay if you want to hike to see the lava flow. Kalani was super helpful and responsive when I had questions prior to our stay. The Grass Shack was a fun off-the-grid experience for our family. We wish we had stayed in the area more than one night. The snacks and water provided were nice extra touches.

  • Reviewer: Jacqui

Comments: It was great! Just as described. We loved that it was off the grid, and a bit in the middle of nowhere. If you think of it is high end camping, it has everything you need! Liked being able to walk out the door and wander through the old lava fields. Could see the glow of the caldera at night (but remember to get to it is an hour drive). Make sure to go snorkelling at the Kopoho tide pools (30 min away). Kitchen had everything we needed, and we cooked every night (BBQ, small fridge, running water, cooking utensils etc.). Check in was easy, lock box code and use the key. It's more noisy around there than you would think (roosters in the morning, crickets, rain on a metal roof) so you might want to bring ear plugs if you're a light sleeper. Closest store is a 20-30 minute drive away, so stock up before you arrive. Adventurous travellers will love this place! People who are bothered by a gecko in their bathroom may not appreciate its charm. I have recommended it to a bunch of friends already, and would definitely go back again when we're on the big island.

Comments: What a wonderful, off the beaten path place to stay on Hawaii. A friend and I stayed for a few days and would’ve loved to stay longer. Sleeping in open air was amazing & the close accessibility for a biking/hiking tour to the lava flow was unbeatable. Make sure to read the house manual, as it was clear the hosts live by this (I read it but missed one thing. Reaching out to the owners was easy and fast, but their reply led me to believe they prefer not to be bothered.) Overall, a great stay and would love to come back

Comments: This location is really special. It's on top of a recent lava flow and the wide open views are amazing. The house has a unique style, really different architecture in that it is extremely open which is charming and special. It's like either sleeping in a tree house fort or on a luxury train. The kitchen is more like a bar. It's really fun.

Comments: We loved our stay at the GrassShack. Dee and Kalani were great hosts! We reached a couple of mins before checkin time and Dee kindly showed us around the house and all the amenities. This container home that they have built is amazing with a lot of personal and thoughtful touches. Definitely recommend staying here. The location and view of lava fields is fantastic! (Also highly recommend reading their instructions before getting there).

Comments: The GrassShack Lanai is an absolutely wonderful space. Though constructed partially from a shipping container and labeled a "tiny home," it didn't at all feel like either. There was ample space for the three of us and the outdoor kitchen was totally awesome. We successfully cooked both dinner and breakfast, enjoying a warm breeze throughout and utilizing the picnic table to dine. Kalani and Dee left snacks (which we thoroughly enjoyed) and potable water (though we almost went through all of it in our one night stay). As noted in the listing, it's still a hike to the lava flow, but it's nice even just to walk around or rent nearby bikes. We did hear the neighbors at night—they next home is in very close proximity—but that wasn't a dealbreaker and it was otherwise very peaceful and beautiful. We all really loved the mix of indoor/outdoor space and the experience of being on the lava rock. Mahalo for a very lovely and memorable stay!

Comments: If you want a unique experience, stay here! Stylish, lots of space, super clean, off the grid, one of a kind house! Off the grid but the bathroom is one of the nicest bathrooms I have ever seen! Great common area, large kitchen and just lots of space to chill and enjoy the naturalness that surrounds you! Has everything you need, amazing location, clear skies at night and Kalani was an excellent host. Great communication and was very accomodating- would stay here again for sure!

Comments: Don’t pass this place up! It is quite unique and was a highlight of our 2 weeks on Big Island. Our only regret was that we didn’t book it for longer- it was even nicer than we had expected. Very comfortable, very clean, fantastic outdoor living space as well as roomy indoor space- had everything we needed. Hosts were wonderful, kind, good communication. We would definitely stay here again!

Comments: This is a great property on the lava fields. The view of the volcanic glow is spectacular and the house is perfectly equipped. It had an off the grid feel but it is not more than a few minute drive to great restaurants and amenities.

Comments: What a great experience we had at Kalani's place. the house is just perfect to see any lava activities and it's located where it is easy access on the main road. Being there makes you feel home away from home because it roomy, clean, and they even have telescopes. On top of all that, Kalani response very fast in case you have any questions.

Comments: If you’ve ever stayed in an off-grid home they can be challenging. This one on the other hand is so well-prepared you barely can tell you were staying off-grid. It was comfortable and very stylish and the hosts are extremely accommodating. I highly recommend this to anyone staying near Pahoa.

Comments: A really fum place to stay in a remote, but fantastic location. Groceries and restaurants a short drive away, but spend as much time at Kalani's as you can and enjoy the incredible area.

Comments: The house is unique and off the grid. Had amazing experience staying on the lava fields. Beautiful house and everything is thoughtful. Very comfortable and has all amenities we wanted. Kalani has two cycles and we went for a small tour around the lava field. Though didn’t have luck viewing lava because of change in lava flow in Hawaii (madam pele wants us to visit again). Will visit again! Highly recommended!

Comments: Awesome place and sustainable! The setting is just amazing. Just an FYI -great way to disconnect from the world but you still have good access to Wi-Fi. Highly recommend it.

Comments: The shack was sitting around the dry lava. It was unique and special place. The sunrise and sunset were amazing. You could easily see thousand stars with your eyes without telescope at night. You will have all you needs plus more in the shack. Is remote but not far from all the essential in town. Very comfortable place. The hosts were very accommodating and very helpful during our stay. Highly recommended.

Comments: What is their not to say about Kalani’s place? The Grass Shack was by far my husbands and I favorite place on the whole island. The space is big, and there are so many thoughtful touches, you don’t want to leave. Beautiful sunrises and sunsets. I loved opening up the garage doors to let the breeze in. Upstairs is a fun spot to soak in the sunsets. To top it off, As we were leaving a double rainbow sent us off to our next destination. This is a whole new meaning to living off the grid and we cannot wait to come back. Mahalo

Comments: If you are considering and comparing this Airbnb to others you can just stop now. This is the place to stay. It's right on the edge of amazing and surreal. It's a place to stay and an experience all wrapped up into one. The panoramic views are incredible. We were a little apprehensive when we first pulled up, like what did we get ourselves into? (This was our first time using Airbnb, and second stay on our Hawaii trip.) After settling in we begin to see what a special place this is. There is so much attention to detail, every little thing is well thought out in the Grass Shack. And the outside views are the icing on the cake. So much to see! There's even bikes available for a bike ride through the lava flows. We had a fantastic time at Uncle Robert's Market - real Hawaiian culture there, not another show. Check out Suisan's Fish Market in Hilo for fresh poke or to purchase fresh fish to bring back to the shack for grilling. If we ever come back to Hawaii we'd love to stay here again. Incredible value for the money.

Comments: Kalani and Deneen are excellent, responsive hosts who provided such nice touches for the stay (snacks and candies, bikes and beach towels we could borrow, nice soap and shampoo and body wash). The house is down a partially unpaved road (you will have 3 small stretches of unpaved parts to navigate through potholes) but we didn't have any problems with a little Nissan Versa sedan (but also for sure most people around here looked like they have 4WD :) ). It is in a small area with other similar (off grid) houses so while you are definitely not close to a town, you will have other people driving by and such. Not at all a problem for us, but in case you were hoping to be the only ones around, you will hear and see cars going past. The house is really cool. Off grid, but with the conveniences of home like running water in the sinks and shower and toilet, and electricity and wifi. We had no problems getting anything to work (though the shower temp can fluctuate so you will want to be a little careful of that). We cooked a couple of breakfasts via the small propane burner as well as made burgers on the grill. There are plenty of pots, pans, dishes, etc and also some salt/pepper, oil, and other spices that were all really appreciated. It did rain a lot while we were there (it's winter, so we expected it) and it can be louder than you might be used to because of the roof; it didn't bother us. We slept in the container part and didn't use the upstairs loft much except to get a few photos. We went into Pahoa a few times for food (Ning's and Kaleo's) and to get groceries; it's about 15-20 minutes to town. The new black sand beach at Isaac Hale is about 30-45 minutes and it was 1 hour to Volcanoes National Park. We enjoyed our stay!

Comments: House is soooo amazing! We have never been in place like this. We had everything what we needed. It was unique experience to live on lava. I wish I could stay longer.

Comments: This place was outstanding and was built right on top of the lava fields. It was sparkling clean and had everything we needed (including beach towels, bicycles, extra towels, loads of snacks, dart board). We had a blast there and would not hesitate to recommend it to others. We stayed on the property for 10 days, and Kalani and Dee even came around after 4/5 days to clean the place and leave us even more snacks. Kalani was very responsive to our questions (we had many, as this was our very first off-grid experience and we didn't want to break stuff). There was nothing that we would critique.

Comments: The host was prompt in responding when needed. Very welcoming as we arrived late, they went ahead and opened the house for us. Place is bigger than we expected. Everything was clean and there as stated. They had everything we needed. Loved it! Amazing place! Highly recommended for off the grid experience.

Comments: The place is a lot bigger than we expected. It provides unique off grid living experience and yet home is well equipped ( hot water, charging stations, wifi etc) . The house sits on top of solidified lava. It has a sleeping area downstairs and in the loft. There are bikes you can use and candies and bars to munch on. We enjoyed magnificent views of the night sky. All in all a wonderful experience.

Comments: The Grass Shack is simply amazing. The views when you wake up are remarkable. They Grass Shack was well maintained with amenities and was the perfect spot to be away from the noises back home in Illinois. Would recommend this to anyone that comes to this side of the island. If I ever have the chance to come back down, this would be the first place I look up.
