Comments: Old Schoolhouse Hospitality is a dream stay. Everything had attention to detail and was very comfortable. I especially loved the peaceful feel inside and outside. I encourage everyone to stay here.

Comments: This is an awesome place, new modified level with an incredible art design from every room. The beautiful indoor pond with water fall and outdoor pond, tastefully decorated with every need thought of, well supplied kitchen made cooking at home easy. The area is not in a common location but if you are looking for a quiet area to relax, enjoy the typical scenery out of the traffic. This house was a pleasure to stay in, the host Jim and Ted are very welcome to their gussets and made every thing easy.

Comments: The hosts, house and grounds were truly amazing. It is what one images Hawaii to be beautiful and relaxing. It is about 16 miles into Hilo but I was looking for a private getaway and found it at their home. The hosts had built this home and the attention to details are to be appreciated. The lava rock fireplace, kitchen area where you can enjoy a meal while looking out to their private oasis and many other personal touches that will make your stay a true pleasure.

Comments: A beautiful and peaceful property. This home is a gem! Family friendly environment and "hip" enough for the singles. Jim was a very friendly host and provided us will all the amenities that we needed! We were able to cook dinner and breakfast due to the fully loaded kitchen. The back yard was defiantly one of the highlights of this Gem. The home has a great character to it and we will be back to stay for another weekend in the future!

Comments: Jim and Ted were amazing hosts! They go above and beyond in making a stay with them enjoyable. They provided valuable feedback and answered our questions before and during our stay. The accommodations are beautiful and comfortable. They undoubtedly made our trip to Hawaii the best possible experience possible for our family. They encapsulate what Airbnb is all about. We hope to host them on the mainland some time. ;)

Comments: Jim location is a must go if you are in the area such a wonderful and caring host and also his home is a great experience in its own. Loved and enjoyed every minute and the history is just amazing.

Comments: Jim's place is a tropical paradise. Beautiful koi pond in the backyard that my 2 kids (10 and 9 y.o) could not get enough of the tadpoles, micro frogs, toads, variety of fish. He also has a variety of great games that my kids enjoyed, did not miss having a TV. Place is clean and lovely, and fans provided nice breeze since no AC. Also no dryer but clothes line with the fans dried our clothes well. Location of the house is terrific for all locations near Hilo, and going to Akaka falls, botanical gardens, and volcano national park. Couldn't have asked for a better location and stay, Jim even provided fresh fruits and veggies and sent us off with freshly baked blueberry scones. Thanks again Jim!

Comments: We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and certainly plan to return if Jim will have us back. The Old School Hospitality is a paradise within the paradise of Hilo/Keaau and was so comfortable. We absolutely loved the indoor waterfall and the fabulous spacious bathroom and outdoor shower! Though there was no kitchen oven, only a gas stove top and microwave, we found it very easy to work around it. As the setting is so serene, one of our favorite things were waking up each morning and enjoying our coffee and/or mimosa's on the patio while taking in the wildlife and beautiful fruit trees and soft breezes. We seriously can't to book again! ❤️

Comments: We really enjoyed our stay. Beautiful home and landscaping. Jim was an excellent host and we enjoyed learning about the local history of the house. The space is large and has all kinds of extras - everything you might need.

  • Reviewer: Meredith

Comments: Before reserving, Jim promptly answered all my questions. His property is lovely and the space is clean, comfortable, and quiet, just as described. The bathroom is wonderful. What made the experience special was the aloha hospitalty. Felt welcomed as a friend, was invited to share a few meals and he helped with questions about the local area. At the same time, there was plenty of privacy. If you want to be in this area, this is a terrific choice.

Comments: Loved every aspect of our experience with Jim. The scenery was breathtaking and accommodations were over the top! There's no other place we want to stay except right here!! Amazing time!!

  • Reviewer: Raphael

Comments: This is a remarkable place. We were overwhelmed by Jim's hospitality and the charming house itself. Our three days were way too short to enjoy all the cozy corners of the apartment and its surroundings. It's a good place to stay clear but still close enough to Hilo. Volcano National Park is only a 40 minutes drive away. If you want to have a relaxed place to stay in the Hilo area outside of town - stay at Jim's!

Comments: Beautiful scenery, quite place, lovely cats, great host :)

Comments: Your villa is a fashion, beautiful, clean. The garden in front of the is very sweet to grow a lot of fruit. We have just arrived at the villa, the landlord sent all kinds of fruit, kinds; papaya; banana ; hu you;oranges and so on. Everything needs to be satisfied. All of them are first-class. We really enjoyed the time here. We`ll come if we have time. Thank you for bringing us good memories. Thank you for your own cake. It`s very delicious. Merry Christmas!

Comments: This place is AMAZING! Jim and Ted are amazing hosts who went above and beyond with their generosity. The rooms were spacious and charming as seen in the pictures and the house was clean and welcoming. The pool table was really fun and we loved the view of the backyard (watching the koi and neighborhood chickens). This is the perfect place to relax and unwind. My only regret is that our time there passed so quickly. Out of our whole trip in Hawaii, this place was the family's favorite. Will book again :)

Comments: We had an amazing stay at Old School Hospitality. The house is beautiful and rich in history. The backyard is well kept and allowed for exploring. The kitchen had everything we needed including fresh fruit and flowers from the yard. The shower was a highlight, you could look up and see the trees and sky. We felt secluded but were close to all things volcano and to the black sand beaches. Jim went above and beyond to make us feel welcomed. We would stay here again in a heartbeat!

  • Reviewer: Irene

Comments: This place is a gem in the jungle! It's is spacious, stylish, clean, quiet and simply beautiful. The hosts, Jim and Ted, are fantastic and very prompt in communication. I would recommend this place to anyone travels to the Big Island. Irene

Comments: A bit out of the way if staying to see the Volcanic National Park, 30-45 minutes, but the back yard is so lush and beautiful. They allowed us to stay one night and we made our reservations rather last minute. A most unique place with lovely colors, wood floors, pool table and the bathroom is to die for especially the shower.

  • Reviewer: Racy

Comments: Jim is a very kind host with true aloha spirit. His place is truly unique with the indoor waterfall and waterfall like shower. It is in a semi rural setting and at night you will be serenaded by the tree frogs and birds. Thank you again for your hospitality!

  • Reviewer: David

Comments: This is a great place to stay for a couple of nights or more. The grounds are beautiful. The inside is well constructed, beautiful, spacious & super clean. The shower was a pleasure.

Comments: Прекрасная база для тех, кто хочет исследовать восточную часть острова. Огромные апартаменты с прудом и двором, невероятно гостеприимные хозяева и дом с уникальной историей. Рекомендую. I would recommend to stay in Jim&Todd’s place for everyone who wants to explore East side of Big Island. It was unforgettable to live in their unique house. There are plenty of space, huge backyard with a fish pond, lots of nice and sweet details like fresh fruits and flowers, coffee and tea in the kitchen, classy furniture and floors and a unique bathroom made of lava. And there are orchids blooming right on your backyard (Website hidden by Airbnb) Jim and Todd hospitality exceeds any expectations. Jim did all to make us feel very welcomed, he gave us lots of recommendations and even took us to the local event with Hawaiian music. Thank you so much guys, we hope to see you again! Masha, Kosta and Max.

Comments: Amazing surroundings, postcard location, gorgeous accommodation. We have stayed in the same estate previously and Jim’s place offers everything you could want. We travelled with our 3yo and he loved he place also. Thx Jim

  • Reviewer: Liesl

Comments: We had a lovely stay at Old Hospitality. The place is very big - two full bedrooms, living room, large dining table under the sun/rain room, kitchen, and the amazing bathroom. It rained every day we were there and the fountain would trickle water whenever the pond above got full enough. We ate breakfast looking out over the lawns at the large pond, eating fresh fruits grown on the property. It was lovely.

Comments: Wonderful host and a beautiful home!

Comments: My wife, myself, and one of our friends stayed here for two nights and loved it. It was close to Kalapana and the Lava, easy to get to Hilo. The place is great, well decorated and clean, nice kitchen that was easy to cook in, and we enjoyed the pool table and stereo for some light music. Shower was beautiful, and the indoor waterfall/pond thing was very cool. Loved the outdoor koi pond. Beautiful place and we’d highly recommend it! The kind of place we took plenty of pictures of, to remember the great place we stayed during our trip! Jim was also very nice and responsive. Went above and beyond to help us enjoy our stay

Comments: Old hospitality is just as advertised. The space was absolutely beautiful. You feel cocooned away in your own little paradise. It was a central location to all the place we went and to our friends who lived on the island. Jim was a great host. He made sure we checked in and had everything we needed. The waterfall is an awesome feature, and the shower was so nice. He even gave us some lemons. We will definitely be back soon. Thank you Jim and Ted.

Comments: Jim’s old school hospitality lived up to is name! Wonderful hosts, a lovely apartment, lots of space to hangout In the back yard and enjoy the koi pond. Should the Puna area be what you are looking for this is the place to stay. Hilo is 20 minuets away, Pahoa is 15 minuets in the other direction. lots of good food in both areas. Loved the time we spent here!

Comments: We have nothing but great things to say about our brief stay at Jims place. It's better than advertised. So serene. It's like a mystical jungle with great , very clean amenities. The indoor waterfall is great and the open air shower is fun too. Book for sure, you will not be disappointed.

Comments: Magical... what an incredible place to stay and an absolutely fabulous host. Thank you Jim! :) Words cannot express how amazing of an experience it was for all of us to stay here. Our only regret is that we didn't get to stay longer. If you want a true "aloha" experience - this is a place you will find it. Mahalo nui loa ~

Comments: What a beautiful home! Jim and his partner built an extraordinary home. Jim’s hospitality is second to none. You are surrounded by tropical life and sounds and beauty. Amazing experience!

  • Reviewer: Eileen

Comments: Jim’s place is gorgeous, it really is a special place, very tropical and lush. The home is immaculate, the shower is awesome and if you forgot anything, it’s probably already there! One thing to note is that the WiFi is not the strongest - enough to spot check weather and email but probably wouldn’t work if you were doing business. Fortunately for us we left work at home. Oh and Jim made us delicious scones on our last day!

  • Reviewer: Mario

Comments: We were a group of 3 friend staying at this wonderful property for 4 nights and loved every moment of it! The host was very responsive from the very beginning of the booking and arranged for his kind neighbour to check us in on our first day. The property is incredibly spacious (even bigger than it looks in the pictures), spotlessly clean and full of lovely details, you will feel like home in no time. The location is ideal for exploring around Hilo and secluded for a peaceful rest after a day out hiking and enjoying the area. The garden with the pond was a great touch and we enjoyed all the night sounds from the surrounding nature. Jim was very welcoming and offered to help with anything we may need for our stay. We loved it and would surely return!

Comments: Highly recommended! Two large bedrooms, lovely living room and a very beautiful garden with a pond. Pretty clean. I wish I could spend a whole day there without going out.

  • Reviewer: Carrie

Comments: This is a piece of paradise! You can hear birdsong and enjoy the great scenery from any room! Bright and airy. Kids loved the huge backyard where they could feed koi and tadpole in the morning. Board games and the pool table were a hit at night! Host was quick to respond to any questions and requests. Close to the tidepools and the Maku'u market (love it!). It's a bit far from restaurants and shops (30 min each way) but the kitchen has everything you need to make an easy meal. It's a huge place for the 4 of us! Just note that they don't have a dryer. But they have a clothes line ropes and most of our items dried within a day.

Comments: Jim's place is such a serene tropical paradise. This place stimulates all senses like scents of the flowers around , sounds of birds, animals, rain and thunder, sight of chickens and birds, lush green tropical, koi pond and the well lit backyard by lightning, touch the hard and porous lava rocks, feel the velvety backyard . We couldn't spend much time as planned but we took lots of pictures , had some fun playing pool table and sitting in the sun/rain room. Loved the shower with all amenities. Thank You for sharing such a serene space with travelers like us !

Comments: This is a beautiful and unique place in a very rural community. I LOVED falling asleep to the sound of the frogs (but the frogs are loud, so if you're sensitive to noise that may be a problem. They come out only at night). The indoor/outdoor shower was amazing. Jim let us feed the koi fish in the backyard and that was a treat. No TV and very little cell phone reception out there, but I didn't mind. House was clean and quiet. Jim was a great host.

  • Reviewer: John

Comments: The accommodations were beautiful. We enjoyed the pool table and the Koi pond. The grounds are meticulously well maintained. Jim is a very gracious host. The location is close to Hilo providing a good selection of excellent restaurants should you decide not to use the kitchen facilities. At night you can hear the coquis, frogs and toads that in habit the Koi pond. Though having most of the modern conveniences it maintains a certain amount of rusticity.

Comments: We stayed at this rental for 10 nights. Jim's place truly lives up to its name, Old School Hospitality. There are plenty of resources and amenities. The kitchen is well stocked with everything you need to cook a decent meal (gas cooking, too). The bed linens are soft, beds comfortable; sparkling clean everywhere. We didn't have to buy shampoo and soap like in other rentals, because a generous amount was provided for the four of us. The fish pond with waterlilies in front of the patio is gorgeous, and one can hear the coqui and bull frogs at night with their enchanting concerto. A good place for snorkeling nearby is Richardson Beach Park. The beach is rocky, but there is live coral reef close to shore with a decent amount of fish, including schools of yellow tangs. We have also seen sea turtles galore at the same place. For places to shop and dine, you can either look online or use Jim's info for guests (look for a blue binder) which includes very useful local tips. Overall, we were very pleased with this rental and would stay there again. Thank you Jim and Ted!

Comments: the only problem with staying here is it will spoil you for other places. this house was hand built by jim and ted, who are professional builders and there is so much attention to detail. it’s important to note that those pictures are for your private space, not common areas. it’s huge, has an internal water feature, great kitchen, pool table, and glassed in dining nook which is great for experiencing rain storms without getting wet. jim and ted were so generous with their time but left us to our own devices when needed. it’s like staying with family but without any emotional baggage . really hoping our paths cross again
