Neighborhood Overview: This area is a magical well kept secret on Maui. We are located at the dividing line between the wet side and the dry side, which means we get enough rain to stay green, and enough sun to stay sane! We get rainbows almost daily and are the perfect temperature (60's at night, 70's-80's in the day).
Notes: Please note that we have to add the 14.41% Transient accommodations Tax...separately from the airbnb charges. If we included them in the price, you would have to pay airbnb's fees on top of that and it would cost you more....I will send you a "resolution request" through airbnb that will allow you to pay the taxes without any extra fees. We have a HUGE, extremely friendly dog on the property....you will love him!
Transit: You definitely need a rental car. The bus stop is 2 miles away...the roads are relatively narrow and windy....
Access: You have access to the adorable cottage, wireless internet, shared BBQ and the full 8.5 acres of two adjacent lots that includes The Sacred Garden... We have off road parking on a gated property. You are welcome to help yourself to seasonal fruit.
Interaction: We will greet you and orient you to the property and live on the adjacent property so can be there in less than a minute if you need us...but we also respect that you sought our property for privacy. We are available to guide you, answer questions and give you a tour of the farm if desired.
House Rules: This property is a "drama-free zone" so please respect the peace and serenity concept.... Our biggest rule is that you respect the land, people, plants and animals on it...and yourselves as well! Please note check in is after 3:00pm and Check out is 11:00am. Changes to this need to be planned well in advance to coordinate with cleaners. Thank you. Otherwise, the cleaning crew will be showing up promptly at the check out time of 11. We welcome children but ask that parents monitor them while in the yard....this is "real nature" with a seasonal stream, slippery rocks, etc. and we do not want anyone hurt. Please take 100% responsibility for your safety and that of your children. Quiet hours are 9pm-8am. Noise projected beyond the property during quiet hours is not allowed. This is a working nursery and farm so please know that we do work and live here. It is very private however, others are on the property. It is a LARGE property.... Comments: We had a great time at your brand newly upgraded cozy, little gingerbread home! Eve and Steve (Jeff Bridges twin brother LOL!!!) are amazing hosts. This is a beautiful location, very lush, wooded garden with a nice river in the back of the cabin. Eve has an awesome sacred garden located on the property. It is very unique, peaceful, serene, excellent for relaxing and meditation. The gingerbread is close to a cool little beach town called Paia and the Baldwin Beach Park. Thank you for letting us enjoy your beautiful property. We definitely recommend the Gingerbread House for couples! P.S. Don't bring an alarm clock, the roosters will be happy to wake you up in the morning!

Comments: This was a great place to stay and a great experience. There are interesting grounds and the amazing plant nursery to explore, and there is also Eve's Forbidden Fruit Stand. The Gingerbread House is truely unique. It is very interesting and has been recently remodeled. A beautiful place inside and out. The grounds offer a variety of fruit trees and it is set in tropical rain forest. It was a most pleasurable base for our adventures on Maui.

Comments: Eve's enchanted jungle cottage was amazing! It was just what we needed! The seasonal creek behind the house was flowing, the tangerines were juicy and ripe, and the succulent garden was spectacular! Eve has really created a special place with her creativity and green thumb! The labyrinths arranged on the property were fantastic for clearing the mind so we even bought a book Eve wrote about labyrinths. Thanks for the beautiful accommodations! Bodhi the dog is super chilled out and cool to have around too. Very private but not overly isolated. Perfect place!

Comments: Eve's place is sweet, cozy and a complemented our Maui experience. Nestled next to a stream with trees laden with oranges, lemons and bananas, the Gingerbread House delivered all the comforts and ease of home, while providing great views of the tropical trees towering above us. Morning chickens would cluck near our door and the friendliest dog in the world, Bodhi, always gave us a nuzzle. The house is on property shared with Eve's plant nursery -a beautiful setting that completes the picture.

Comments: We loved this cozy little cottage! It was close to the airport, and only a few miles away from Paia, a happening little town. The Sacred Garden was pretty amazing. The grounds were quiet, and we loved the rain at night falling on our rooftop. It was a very peaceful and relaxing place. Thanks Eve for letting us stay. Hoping to come back and visit again one day. Mahalo!

Comments: Eve and Steve were really outgoing and helpful -- and the cottage was fantastic. The place is situated in a beautiful landscape with lots to explore. Inside it's cozy, clean and the sort of place you want to tuck away inside for a few days to relax. There's a great little kitchen and big bathroom so there's no "roughing it" about this place. Highly recommend this spot as Eve and Steve have clearly thought through all of the details to make it a great place to stay in Maui.

Comments: Eve's Gingerbread House really is adorable and the grounds around it is so beautiful. There's even a stream running close by which you can hear from inside the house. The place looks even better than the photos. Wifi and cellular reception can be spotty, but what a great location to explore this part of Maui! Makawao and Paia is a five to fifteen minute drive away with restaurants and hiking trails close by. I highly recommend staying here. The place is charming, comfy, and cozy!

Comments: As there are so many comments in English we decide to serve the German speaking customers with a comment in German: Die Lage von Eve's Gingerbread-House für die Erkundung der gesamten Insel ist optimal.

Comments: This was a wonderful experience! It was also our first time using Airbnb and visiting a Hawaiian Island and we would definitely do it all over again. Early in our planning we intentionally made the decision to avoid the big resorts and seek out something that felt a little more like the "real" Hawaii. Eve's rustic cabin provided just that. The cabin was clean and comfy, with a great amount of lighting and windows. One of my favorite parts of the cabin was the large window high above the kitchen that looks into the jungle across the stream. It almost looks like a framed painting every morning when you wakeup. The chirping birds in the jungle made it that much better. The property is close to Makawao and Pa'ia, both of which have great dinning and shopping and a great small town feel. We still visited the big resort towns for the beaches which weren't too far away. A baby beach protected by a reef is also just 10 min away! We found the cabin to be a great central location to see just about everything on the island. Tip: We bought the book "Maui Revealed" before we made this trip and used it religiously the entire time we were there. Kula Bistro is a must, Makawao fresh morning doughnuts in the white building with green trim and usually a line (it's quick I promise!) 808 Cafe has great food and is across the street from our favorite beaches. Drive to Hana takes all day if you go all the way around, but is so very worth it. Get out and see everything! Bring food! The Gingerbread Cottage is a perfect central location to everything on the island, but far enough from the hustle of the towns. Be sure to do the labyrinth walks on the property, it's a great way to prepare your mind to enjoy your vacation, also go sit by the river and read a bit, it's very relaxing. We will be back next year!!!

Comments: Me and my girlfriend had a wonderful time staying at the Gingerbread house! We wanted to be excluded from other tourists and the big hotels and this was exactly what we were looking for. The stream flowing in the back of the house is great,! The inside and outside is beautiful! It's at a high elevation so driving to or from other cities is awesome seeing the views! I would definitely recommend staying here!!!

Comments: Staying at the Garden Gingerbread House was the best decision of our trip. This beautiful oasis in the center of the gulch is where to find tranquility and peace. Eve was a phenomenal host who met us upon arrival to explain the ins and outs of this spectacular property. The smell of cedar permeated throughout and it had every amenity we could ever need. As we walked the grounds, we were able to benefit from the sounds of water running through the creek, birds chirping, Bodhi on his latest adventure and explore The Sacred Garden next door. The labyrinth is a must! Mahalo to Eve for all of her recommendations. We found healing in a very special place and will never forget this glorious experience. Hope to be back again!

Comments: We had a wonderful stay at the gingerbread house. Eve and Steve were wonderful and attentive hosts. They had great tips on what to do and where to go, and we spent the week eating lilikois from their garden. The cottage is just enough for two, comfortable with a killing shower. The cooler was a very nice touch and we carried it everyday with us. It is the ideal location if you want to explore Upcountry Maui and still be very private. That is if you can do with the upside of a forest getaway: bugs. Unfortunately for us I had a bad reaction to mosquito bites, but that's on us.

Comments: Eve is very helpful and sweet. The house is wonderful, a dream. Unfortunately I was afraid for spider and insects. The house is very clean and complete with everything but it's in wood and in the middle of a fantastic Garden. Eve understand immediately and give us other accomodation, as beautiful as that. We lived four relaxing days in her home so wonderful that was very difficult leave that place.. Thank you Eve, we lived a dream.

Comments: Our stay in Maui and in the Gingerbread House was nothing short of magical. The location was secluded and romantic, but still within a short drive to many towns and more busy areas. We felt at home right away. The kitchen was stocked with all of the appliances we needed to cook meals, and shortly upon arrival Eve (our most gracious host) handed us a packet of recommendations and directions, as well as telling us where the nearest local market was. We explored the whole island, and never felt like anything was too far since it was such a central point. We definitely had to apply the bug repellant liberally, even when going to bed, but that is what happens when you stay in the forest! Even though the property has other houses and a workplace on it- we never felt crowded or infringed upon. Also- right now the property has liliko'i (passion fruit) blooming like crazy and we were able to gather and feast on it daily! The gardens attached to the property are also very beautiful and worth a look. We were very sad to hear they were having a full moon walk on the eve of our departure! All in all I would HIGHLY recommend staying at any one of the properties that Eve and Steve run, but we will definitely be returning to the Gingerbread house the next time we make it to Maui!!

Comments: Eve was super helpful and suggested several locations to check out. The fruit on the grounds were delicious. Very quite and private place to relax. The stream was dry when we went so if it was running I'm sure it would have added another element of tranquility. Don't forget to check out the gardens on the property and walk the labyrinth.

Comments: My husband and I stayed in the Gingerbread house for 3 nights. It was a great experience, very quaint and quiet. We loved staying in Makawao we were within minutes of everything. We often visited Paia during this time. The nursery is beautifully kept and we felt like we were in our own private jungle. Loved the big bathroom and large shower. We definitely plan to recommend this location to others.

Comments: We spent 6 nights of our honeymoon at the Gingerbread House, everything is exactly as advertised, a real hideaway in the middle of the jungle, but not too far away from all the interesting places. The passion fruits are falling off the trees. We will defenitely miss that. Don't be scared of animal running over the roof at night

Comments: The host was there to please and every detail for living in this little cottage was provided for you. The cottage's architecture is wonderful and the house is surrounded by trees since in a jungle atmosphere. The cottage was overly too busy/crowded , however, with large beds and scatter rugs, pictures, mounds of pillows etc. for me. (I am much more zen but this is a matter of personal taste). It is very quiet with eating space outdoors which was lovely especially for morning breakfast. There is a musty smell so keep the windows open. The location is terrific within easy reach of a beach, towns, eating places, etc.

Comments: The Ginger Bread House was a fantastic place! Loved that it was our own little get away after exploring Maui. The historic downtown (3min away) was great for dinner and the general store has everything you need. Although I briefly met Eve as she was traveling when we were there, she was a great host and teed everything up for our stay. Amazing spot and we will be back!!!! Also- the shower is five star quality :)

Comments: Highly recommend this delightful hide-away! Gingerbread House is just as described and would stay again. Refreshing to escape the routine tourist on-goings in Maui. Wonderful being able to relax and to enjoy the property with access to gardens and labyrinths. Eve is a very nice host with the perfect blend of availability and privacy. Also, easy to spend time exploring Makawao and Paia from here.

Comments: Eve was extremely welcoming and close by if we needed anything, but cottage was secluded enough that we had lots of privacy. We were surrounded by amazing fruit trees and helped ourselves to freshly picked tangerines, guavas, passion fruit and logan berries - so delicious! The pictures very accurate...the cottage was pristinely clean and comfortable and had everything we needed to feel at home. The locations was ideal, a few minutes to a cute town and close to the national park. The ONE thing that was lacking was the WiFi connection. I failed to read that there was none in the cabin. There was however access at a nearby gazebo, although the connection was not great. I would definitely recommend the Ginger Bread House. Thanks for a great stay Eve!

Comments: The Gingerbread House is an amazing little cottage in Eve and Steve's island sanctuary. It has everything you need for a relaxing jungle getaway. You can tell there is a lot of thought put into everything on the property especially the newly renovated cabin. It sits on a sprawling jungle compound that has many nooks to explore. The house itself is fully equipped. It has a wonderful bathroom and shower. The overall space feels much bigger than it looks in the pictures. We met Eve for a brief time, but we could tell she was a beam of light. Her smile was bright and her laugh contagious. The property is centrally located and a quick drive from downtown Paia, Haiku, and Makawao. We have been very lucky with our AirBnb stays and this was another to add to the list.

The little house itself is so comfortable, with everything you need, and the bed was really comfortable! Eve was very welcoming and wonderful, and had tons of great tips for us. The gardens are lush and beautiful, and we loved picking fruit off the trees. We would come back in a heartbeat.

Comments: We enjoyed our stay in the ginger bread house very much. All was clean and well equipped. As we travelled with our two sons it was a bit too small. But the place is recommended for two so that was our own "risk". The garden is gorgeous and very peaceful. We didn't have the chance to talk to Eve that much but she was very nice and communication via airbnb was fine.

Comments: The Gingerbread House was the best place our wife and I have ever stayed, anywhere. Eve greeted us in the driveway to take us in the house and show us around. Moments later Steve popped in to introduce himself as well. The place was INCREDIBLE. A beautiful, upscale little cottage that looks like it was just built. It had a faint, refreshing smell of fresh cedar from the walls and was spotlessly clean. It was cozy and felt like we were staying in our own little home. Everything we needed was provided from extra towels, to bath products (in an awesome bathroom), to coffee and cookies to start our stay off deliciously. The grounds of the property were epic and because of a recent rain the stream was in full force. We watched it flow over coffee every morning and picked a few tangerines from their tree for breakfast. In the afternoon we sat stream side and read for hours in what might be the most peaceful setting we've ever encountered. We also wandered their adjacent property, The Sacred Garden to take in the labyrinth and nursery as well as the organic farm. It's a huge property that feels like you're secluded from the world yet it's only a few minutes drive to the quaint historic Makawao town with plenty of restaurants, or Paia, the coolest beach town on Maui with shops and some of the best dining on the island. It's also the beginning of the famed Road to Hana which is a must-drive while you're there. We only saw Eve a few times during our 5 day stay but she checked in regularly via text to make sure we were happy. She stopped by just before we left to say goodbye and give us hugs. As much as we loved the other places we stayed this is easily the best of the bunch. We plan to return again next year and hopefully make it an annual holiday trip to Maui. Highly recommend a stay here!

Comments: Our stay at the Gingerbread House was amazing. eve met us at the property and was very thorough on explaining everything. The cottage and bed were so cozy and comfortable and we had everything we needed. Well almost...we had failed to bring any warm clothing (bc it was Hawaii!!) and we were due to have a mtn bike ride at 9,000 ft (brrrrr) and Eve showed up with all sorts of sweatshirts and jackets for BOTH my boyfriend and I and that made such a huge difference on the ride!! We also got to take place in a full moon labrynth ceremony which was on the grounds and that was special to both of us. Perfect spot, perfect little cottage and perfect hosts...what more could you ask for ??

Comments: What a perfect little getaway. Husband and I have been to Hawaii many times and wanted something different, away from the wall of condo buildings by the beaches. Makawao is a charming Upcountry town and the cottage at the Sacred Garden, a short drive away from town, was comfortable and quiet. It is very well appointed with cooking implements that allowed us to make breakfast every morning and dinner many nights. Large bathroom and good storage for our gear. The cottage is perfect for two people and perhaps a young child but any more would feel crowded. The Hogans recently added wifi capabilities so you can check your email and post updates to make your (Hidden by Airbnb) friends envious of your visit. There is no television but a monitor with a DVD player for movies. Beautifully dark at night, we had spectacular star gazing every evening. We had not realized that there was a washing machine and dryer available to us -- a great surprise. Eve welcomed us when we arrived in the evening and gave an overview of the grounds, what fruits were in season and ready to pick (tangarines and avos!) and offered any support we may need. Otherwise, we never saw her or Steve. There is a working nursery on the property and so a little bit of car traffic right by the cottage around 9 AM and 5 PM. By little bit, I am talking about three cars. On Maui, you need to drive everywhere. The closest beach is in Paia, about 20 minutes away. Being in Upcountry, you are on your way up to Haleakala, a short drive from Kahului where you can get whatever provisions you need and we learned shortcuts to Kihei and the East Maui beaches. The cottage (and the spirit of Jimi) was a memorable stay on Maui. If you are looking for the road less travelled plus want approving nods from the locals when asked about where you are staying, check out the gingerbread cottage.

Comments: Eve greeted us at the driveway and gave us a tour of the Gingerbread House. It is the perfect space and offers an amazing getaway. The property is awesome. We were able to sit out back and enjoy the scenery and running stream as well as roam around and explore. The Gingerbread House had everything we needed: towels, shampoo, dishes, a washer and dryer, etc. There were even a library of books and DVDs and a deck of cards. Be sure to check all the drawers and cabinets because we kept finding more and more goodies all over. The one thing worth mentioning is the hot water. It lasts just long enough to take the fastest shower of your life, then it runs out all at once. It wasn't a nuisance or anything, just be prepared to be very, very fast in the shower! There are a few other rentals on the property that all sit pretty close to each other, but we never saw or heard other people. It is like having that beautiful jungle to yourself. Overall, our experience at the Gingerbread House was perfect. If (when) we return to Maui, this is the only way to go! Thanks, Eve and Steve!

Comments: Eve was away so unfortunately we didn't meet her, however Steve her husband welcomed us and told us all about the house and the gardens. It was all that we expected a charming cosy house well equipped and very comfortable. As the house is totally made from Cedar wood the smell inside was fantastic always fresh and calming. The house is close to Paia and the lovely beaches - 10-15 minute drive, all of which are on the Hana highway so easy access to the airport at Kahului and 'The road to Hana I would definitely recommend staying here if you want quiet country style accommodation with easy access to everything else.

Comments: We had a wonderful stay in the Gingerbread Cottage. The location was perfect, in the jungle away from the tourist areas but close enough to everything we wanted to do and see. Eve left a book full of detailed directions to the places we wanted to visit. The cottage was clean and comfortable. The bed was very comfortable. There were lots of clean fluffy towels in the bathroom. The birds gave a lovely concert every morning. I would recommend this cottage to anyone who wants a unique holiday experience away from the crowds.

Comments: Eve was a wonderful host. Kind and welcoming. She brought us fresh avocados from her tree and made sure we had everything we needed in addition to giving us lots of hints about good places to eat and stuff to see. The cottage was adorable and cozy. Just be aware, the jungle can be loud -- the local bird and animal life made it a little tough to sleep the first night as we were adjusting. The neighborhood is great. Paia is a fabulous little town with plenty of shops and restaurants nearby. The Gingerbread Cottage is close to the Hana Highway, Haleakala and all the fabulous upcountry stuff to do and it's not too far a drive to hit the resort area on the west side.

Comments: We are feeling very relaxed after 4 nights in the Gingerbread house. The setting is amazing, and we were able to explore the grounds and enjoy the jungle and river-side seats. Eve was a very gracious host which contributed greatly to feeling relaxed as soon as we arrived. Highly recommend the gingerbread house and as big music fans, we were intrigued by it's history.

A recommander définitivement ! Sans oublier la possibilité de massage inoubliable de la part de Maureen.

Comments: When we first arrived in Maui- I had called Eve to let her know that we were finally there.. She was actually out of the state, but was 100% helpful and very sweet- she answered my calls and my texts right away! We were greeted by Steve and Bodie when we first arrived in Makawao! Super friendly and extremely helpful with everything, gave us insight on nearby places to eat and things to do. The cottage and the property are beyond beautiful! We made friends with Bodie and all the chickens :) The cottage is in an amazing location and we got to experience a lot while we were there. It was a short drive to the Town of Makawao and Pa'ia (2 of the 3 towns that we absolutely LOVED! Hana is the 3rd :D) We went ziplining, hiking, saw the Sunrise and biked down Haleakala, went to the beach and just enjoyed Upcountry! After all of those adventures it was nice to kick back and relax at the cottage :) I already miss it..

Comments: We were looking forward to our stay at the Gingerbread House and it exceeded our expectations. Couldn't have asked for more. Lovely setting, exquisite craftsmanship, and attention to detail. Eve was very responsive and delightful. Her enthusiasm and reverence for this magical property were evident. The description and photos on Airbnb accurately represented what we experienced in person. There was so much to discover in the Sacred Garden. What a gem. We're working on a way to be able to return to this very special corner of Maui with wonderful hosts, Eve and Steve.

Comments: Eve and the Gingerbread cottage were great! What a unique experience. Cozy cottage, all the essentials included. Including towels toiletries bug spray coffee and even cookies! This is the jungle, so there are bugs and the roosters due announce themselves pretty early! There is a stream nearby the cottage, the river flowed in and Eve came and got us to experience it! Very cool No AC, but you don't need it. Convenient location to Paia and Haiku and trips to the top of Haleakala for sunset. Great hikes near by! Bring your boots! I recommend the cottage for anyone who wants a different type of Maui experience. We would return! Thanks Eve and Steve for a great stay!

Comments: We really enjoyed our stay at the cottage. It is very central for getting around. It is located just inside the jungle so it is wetter than the coast but that's not really a problem. The place is very charming with great bathroom and eating facilities. Eve was away on our trip but Steve was also very helpful.

Comments: We had a very warm welcome by Eve's assistant Tanda who showed us the Gingerbread house and the surroundings. The house is located on a very large porperty with a variety of green plants around far away from any 500 bedroom hotel - just nature around! This leads also to a pleasant climate (no AC necessary:) The north shore of Maui is very close if you want to go surfing (Paia is only 10 minutes away) and Kahului with the airport is only 20 minutes away. A special thanks goes to Eve and Tanda for fulfilling an individual request in advance:) We had a great time and would definitely come back:)

Comments: Eve greeted us upon arrival and was so wonderful! She showed us around the cottage and property and made us feel completely at home. The property was isolated and quiet, but was not far away from the beach or towns like Paia. It was exactly as described--with one exception of there being no wi-fi or 4g access in the cottage. We enjoyed our time here a lot and look forward to coming back!

Comments: Leading up to our stay Eve communicated well via email to make sure we had everything we needed. The house is beautiful and tucked away in a secluded part of Maui and it was nice having a whole house to ourselves at the end of a busy day. Its set in a tropical garden so we felt part of our surroundings, especially at night when we'd leave the windows open so we could wake up to all the natural sounds outside. The house came fully equipped with kitchen facilities so we could cook our own meals plus a good sized bathroom area. The host also left instructions which were helpful. A couple of minor things we would've liked - one was wifi in the room. Even though this was a minor issue, there were times when it was raining and we'd have to walk out to the gazebo to use the internet. Also, during out 4 day stay, because Eve and her partner were on holiday we didn't meet with anyone the whole time we were there. Even though we arrived late at night, we thought someone would've dropped by to introduce themselves some time during our stay. This wasn't a huge deal though as our overall stay was fantastic. Loved the house and the location and would absolutely stay there again.

It is a 5 minute drive to Makawao which is a fun little town with restaurants and cafes and a 10 minute drive to funky Paia and it's awesome beaches. This was also a good location for driving to the summit of Haleakala to catch sunrise. Highly recommended!

Comments: My wife and I stayed at the Gingerbread house for our honeymoon and it was amazing. I would love to live in a small home like this; very cozy, simple, and yes, it is adorable. The Gingerbread house is located in a private property, called the Sacred Garden. The sacred garden is a very fitting name for this piece of land as it is very peaceful and spiritual. It is surrounded by nature, it has a river flowing in the background, and is a spiritual retreat center as well. Our host Eve was out of town during our stay but she did a wonderful job ensuring that everything was ready for us and provided all the information we needed during our stay. Thank you so much and definitely recommended!

The house was well equipped and we had everything we needed for our peaceful stay. We were greeted by Eve and Bohdi and they also saw us off, which was really nice. Comments: Eve was very responsive before and during our trip. She gave us easy to follow directions to her place from the airport and then was out front to greet us when we arrived. She showed us around, gave us some pointers and then let us get situated. The cottage was exactly what we expected. It was so charming and due to the relatively remote location we felt perfectly disconnected and "away" from everything. We had one small issue finding blankets which Eve immediately took care of once I notified her. This property is dreamy. It is a beautiful, serene retreat... away from 'tourist' Hawaii, but close enough to conveniences. We fell in love with the labyrinth next door and now my son wants to seek out every labyrinth we can find. Thank you for the use of this wonderful little slice of heaven.

Comments: This is really a great place, hidden in the jungle. Description is very accurate, everything you can dream of is there in the house for you to use (even beach towels and boogieboards !!), all in perfect condition. Eve and Steve are so great people ! Unfortunately, we did not see them much because of a busy schedule on our side. Some things to note: in the gardens more than one rooster with their hens roam, and these have a tendency to call out even in the middle of the night with the moonlight .. if you need complete quietness, this might not be your place. Also note it's (civilized) jungle, so you might see some critters ! We saw a huge frog in front of the patio door, a large centipede (inside the house at the door, we brought it back out where it belongs), some Mongoose jump around the cottage and surf on the roof in the night. Great smell of cedar wood in the house, by the way ! We really liked all this, but some city-zens might not be ready for it. Again, it's a GREAT place, great people, i can highly recommend to stay with Eve and Steve if you look for a place in Makawao.

Comments: I'm not even certain how I can describe how incredible Eve and the Gingerbread house were! First the house/property are in a perfect location on the island if you are there to explore and be away from all of the tourists! It is so very peaceful, yet a close drive to stores, restaurants, beaches, mountains, and the airport. The Gingerbread is such a beautiful little gem...the smell of cedar and the sound of birds greeted us everyday and simply helped us ease into the right mind set for a wonderful vacation! The property is lovely. Complete with fruit trees, flowers an incredible labyrinth. The only problem we had with it was getting enough motivation to leave that wonderful place in the mornings to go explore the island! Eve was wonderful as well! She made us feel so welcomed and was very helpful with all of our inquiries. All in all an incredible place run by wonderful people!

Comments: Eve and her husband were both lovely. We were met when we first arrived. The cottage contained a very helpful instruction and suggestion guide. We had been looking for "baby beach" with no suggest and the directions in her book were perfect. The Gingerbread Cottage was charming with appreciated artistic touches. The setting was beautiful, as described. The rental houses were a bit closer together than expected but when one guest was challenged with noisy children Even was immediately "on it" to maintain a serene and restful atmosphere. Eve was kind enough to personally loan us beach chairs and to suggest a website where I could purchase a specific small statue I was looking for. We especially enjoyed meeting Bodie, the dog... for a little pet therapy!

Comments: My fiancée and I had an amazing time staying at The Gingerbread House. The cottage was immaculately clean, well stocked, and had a calming cedar smell that put is at ease after a long, tiring flight. Eve left us a binder of places to eat, local beaches, and hikes with driving directions which was helpful when planning our day. Eve was very responsive to our text messages prior to our arrival and also during our stay; she also arranged a snorkeling to Molokini Crater which was fantastic! Comments: My husband and I started our stay in Maui at this beautiful cottage, and it was the perfect beginning to a wonderful vacation! From the moment we were greeted by Eve (and a chicken!) in the yard, we knew we had chosen the right place. The cottage and surrounding land were even better than one can imagine from the photos. We loved sitting by the stream behind the cottage, which is absolutely beautiful. Eve was extremely helpful to us in planning our visit and hiking on Haleakala, choosing a restaurant, etc. She also had coffee and cookies waiting for us - definitely a plus. This is a great location for starting your vacation on Maui, as it is close to the airport, yet close to Haleakala National Park, several small towns, and beaches - you can settle into the peacefulness of Maui before heading down the road to Hana. We would definitely love to stay here again and highly recommend it to those who want something other than the resort experience.

Comments: This place was an absolute dream for my husband and I, so much so, that we got married on the property. It is the perfect private retreat in the middle of Maui. Quiet, beautiful, and really feels like your own home. When we left, we were disappointed at the thought of someone staying in "our house"! Eve is one of the kindest ladies you could have the pleasure of meeting, and she went above any beyond to accommodate any of our needs. Beach towels in the house are a huge plus as you are in Maui, and any little thing you have don't have to pack is an advantage. Full sized working fridge and appliances, fresh bag of coffee, and fresh cookies were all there on our arrival. The dog on the property is a sweetie , and is a nice touch of pet therapy in a home away from home. The Sacred Garden on the property is breathtaking, and my husband and i loved the local advice given to us by Eve and some of her employees. Upon leaving we had forgotten a pretty expensive bluetooth speaker, and she was kind enough to text us and keep it in her home so we could retrieve it before catching our plane. The backyard is much more beautiful than the pictures, as they have added a patio and outdoor fireplace. We can't rave about this place enough, and are planning on coming back next summer with our children! You won't regret staying with on this property, and hope others will fall in love with it the same way we did!

Comments: Staying at the Gingerbread Cabin was an absolute dream. My wife and I booked the week about 6 months in advance and were treated so well from day 1. Eve and Steve were wonderful hosts. Eve extended every courtesy from the week before our arrival to our final departure. The cabin was fully stocked with everything two honeymooners could want and the kitchen was well equipped for cooking light meals throughout the week. The back patio was perfect for reading and eating breakfast in the lush garden environment. There is even a small stream running through the back of the spacious property. The entire place is set up for serenity and privacy. For those of you who care about such things, the shower was AMAZING and easily fits 2 people. Everything about the stay was serene, romantic, and deeply peaceful. My wife and I wanted to explore Maui a bit and Eve was very prepared to recommend restaurants, excursions, massages (she has a massage therapist on location), and she even set up a snorkling tour of Molokini for us. We loved every minute of our stay. During the snorkling trip I met her husband Steve, the captain of the boat. He is a master of scuba diving and provides dive tours around the island as well. He was very nice and easy to talk to. All in all, my wife and I couldn't have been happier. If you are a party of two without children, this is the place for you.

Comments: My wife and I stayed here for a few nights in the middle of our honeymoon. We thought a "jungle" getaway would be fun. Pros: This property is absolutely beautiful. Picture perfect. The gardens surrounding are gorgeous and the house itself is adorable, as stated in the description. Cons: We realize that this is the jungle, however the listing said there would be Wi-Fi. Upon arrival, it was out and didn't start up until I had to find the router (next day), and reset it myself. The biggest con, which actually caused my wife and I to leave a day early and go to a resort: CRITTERS! On our second night, we encountered two gecko lizards in the house as well as one of the largest spiders I have ever seen. Although gecko's inside a Hawaiian home are often considered good luck, I'm not sure we subscribe to that belief! If little things like that send shivers down your spine, stay far away from this place. If you're fine with roughing it and sharing the bed with someone, or something, other than your significant other, this is the place for you!

Comments: This was a beautiful, secluded, quiet, and lush cottage. It was well appointed as well. Eve was responsive and friendly. We didn't use the kitchen much but it would have been suitable to simple meal prep. The bathroom was well appointed though the shower seemed to run out of hot water at odd times.. Maybe it's hooked up to the same supplies as the other structures on the property or just has limited capacity. The wifi was dead, which was a letdown since the property has poor cell reception. In some regards that could be considered a good thing. Aside free on those minor grievances, the experience was wonderful. I hope to stay here again and would recommend to friends.

How often does one find a complete kitchen set-up that includes a juicer? Eve was completely accessible to me for any questions or needs I had. The house has everything you need and is conveniently located near the OGG airport, towns, beaches and major roads that will take you to the other sides of the island. There are adorable chickens and geckos outside of the house that add to the upcountry experience. Eve was an exceptional host. She was always so quick to respond and offer suggestions about anything on her property or the island. The outside seating area was also really nice, but definitely bring bug spray! It's pretty centrally located for a lot of spots on the island but it was at least a 25 minute drive to most places we wanted to go. The only thing that was kind of a bummer was there was no cell service (we have AT&T) and the wifi was also down and we weren't able to connect to any of the other wifis on the property. The cottage itself was lovely as well, very cozy and had everything we needed in the kitchen, for the beach, etc. It was even better than the pictures, and even more inviting. Eve was also super sweet and helpful, giving us directions to the local markets and restaurants. Only a few minor inconveniences. One was that the listing says there is wifi...there isn't any working wifi in the actual house. Annoyance for us, but could be a make or break for others. Second, the shower is an 'eco' shower, and is only hot for 6 minutes, then it runs cold and gets hot again in 10 minutes. Once I figured out how to lower the stream pressure, and wash fast, it was fine. Kinda a bummer though because when I'm on vacation I like to be in there a little longer and not feel rushed.... AND had to experience a very cold shower before I learned. All well, I would stay here again, so very minor. :)

Comments: We had a great time staying at the Garden Gingerbread House. The place was just like the pictures, except even more beautiful in person. I traveled with my wife and two young kids (1 and 3 yrs old) and it was the perfect size. The kids loved exploring the "jungle" outside of the cottage. Eve was a great host....she gave us a tour of the property, answered all questions, and was helpful if we needed anything. She had a pack-and-play for us to use, along with beach towels and other items. She was very nice and easy to talk to. We thought the property was at a great location. Although it's in the rainforest, it was easily accessible to many places on the island. It was close to the airport, local towns like Paia, some beaches, and the Road to Hana. Getting over to west or south Maui was around 45 minutes, but it went by fast with the great scenery. We love going to the beach, but it was so nice going back to the property at night and waking up there in the morning. I can't even think of any complaints. I would definitely stay here again!

Comments: We had a wonderful stay at the cottage. Eve and Steve welcomed us on arrival, showed us around the place and made sure we had everything we needed. The location is conveniently located between Paia/Haiku/Makawao, so if you plan on exploring upcountry Maui this is a great option. Keep in mind that you are definitely in "real nature" - very tropical, with bugs, wild chickens, and other crawly creatures, so if that isn't your bag this place probably won't be a great fit. We loved it though. The cottage itself was adorable and impeccably clean and updated, exactly like the pictures. It came fully stocked with basic cooking supplies, beach toys, and a super helpful guidebook that Eve put together. Wi-Fi wasn't working when we were there and cell reception was spotty at best, but that was the case for a lot of places on the east side of the island. And to be honest, it was actually really nice to feel a bit disconnected from the outside world for a while. I also can't forget to mention Bodhi, the largest and most lovable dog you'll ever meet - definitely give his booty a rub if you see him. Can't wait to return!

Comments: We rented the Gingerbread House for five nights during our stay in Maui. The cottage is charming and Eve welcomed us warmly right away. The space had a variety of great conveniences (big fridge, microwave, coffee maker with yummy coffee provided.) The house was clean and well decorated. For a couple the bed was a good size, but not super supportive (if you need a firmer bed). Unfortunately, the week we were in Maui there was an excessive amount of rain resulting in a lot of mud on the property and a sort of constant dampness in the older cottage. The major problem was a lack of internet connection. There is a LINKSYS router in the cottage but it never had a reliable connection to the internet. I was able to load no more than a couple webpages at random in total. Troubleshooting/restarting the router didn't help. This was a pretty significant bummer when trying to plan your day before leaving the house since we also didn't have any cell coverage (AT&T iPhone 7s). According to some previous reviews this is a persistent problem. You could find it on certain parts of the property, but rain & mud made that a bit tricky/inconvenient. Of course, we know no one can control the weather, but if we’re being honest, it put a damper on our stay here, leaving us with a fairly neutral experience. That being said, Eve herself was a lovely host offering tips, helping deliver a package we had to have sent to the house and allowing us to do laundry. If you’re looking to really “get away from it all” the Gingerbread House is a great spot for you and it is conveniently located to the airport, Road to Hana, Paia, Upcountry and even the Wailea area.

Gorgeous scenery, beautiful house, great location and yet still the absolute best place to get away from everything. It was exactly as described but better! Eve has thought of everything. There's a guidebook, beach towels, shampoo/conditioner, Hawaii coffee, cookies, and all basic cooking necessities. If we make it back to Maui, I couldn't imagine staying anywhere else. Loved it!

Comments: This place is so cool! Fruit trees, sacred spaces, a river that runs behind the property and plenty of privacy. Eve was super sweet and helpful with any of our needs, questions and concerns. My partner and I stayed in the ginger bread house for 3 nights. It was perfect for us because we had already spent 10 days on the island and just wanted time to relax. The wifi wasn't the best but we didn't mind at all. It forced us to go outside and actually relax without the distraction of technology. She provides a DVD tv and DVDs for entertainment if needed. My partner and I caught Eves full moon labyrinth session last night and it was really inspiring to hear her talk and to walk the labyrinth. The sacred garden is truly a special place. I highly recommend it. I wish we could have stayed longer. It's in a great location close to everything but far away enough you don't get stuck in traffic. We can not wait to return!

Comments: My wife and I spent the last week at the gingerbread house and had, by far, the best vacation of our lives. When we arrived, we were promptly greeted by Eve and one of the members of her cleaning staff. The property was ready right when we arrived. We talked with Eve and she showed us around the property. We quickly learned that what we read in the great reviews would be confirmed. She walked us around and showed us the fruit trees and said we were welcome to help ourselves to all of the fruit growing nearby. The tangerines were perfect and the lemons were HUGE (great for morning lemon water). The property includes a large house, the gingerbread house, Eve and Steve's house, and the Sacred Garden of Maliko (hope I'm spelling that correctly). Though there were other people renting the larger house next door and Eve and her husband were close by, we definitely felt that there was plenty of privacy. Eve was very clear that if we needed anything, we could contact her right away and she would respond, but that she wanted to give us our privacy otherwise. We did contact her a few times during our stay and she responded instantly. The gingerbread house is absolutely perfect for couples. It is very spacious on the inside and quite stylishly designed. The bed and sheets are totally comfortable and the bathroom has much more space than it appears from the online images. It is great that you can rent this property for less than a standard hotel room in Lahaina considering it is so much larger and more convenient. One item from the previous reviews that concerned us a little before we arrived was that the wifi did not work very well on the property. I will say that the first few days we were here, we could not get any wifi or data connection in the gingerbread house. I was able to walk a few steps to a small gazebo area, though, where the wifi was strong enough to send some emails. To ease future travelers' worries, I am pleased to report that in the middle of our stay, we received a message from Eve that the wifi in the gingerbread house had been fixed. When we returned, we found that the connection was lightning fast. We were able to easily use it for browsing and email and we even found that we could connect to netflix without any problems at all. The best part of staying on this property was the location. You can't possibly find a place to rent on Maui that is more central than this. It is definitely a bit further from Lahaina if you are more interested in hanging out at the beach every day (though Kihei is only about 20-30 minutes compared to Lahaina, which is more like 50-60), but everything else you would want to do on Maui is much closer to Makawao. Getting to the road...

Comments: Very sweet and private location. Great for those interested in a private stay in Maui. If you want to cook at home, note that kitchenette is quite small and the counter-top hot plate is less to optimal. We found the bed to be too soft, but if that is what you like, then you are in luck. The entire place was very clean, and it was nice to sit outside on the back patio eating breakfast in the morning sun or enjoying a glass of wine in the evening (although the mosquitoes make the late afternoon and evening less than optimal). Over-all good to very-good, and potentially better depending on your preferences and requirements.

Comments: Eve was a great host and the place was exactly as described. It is in the middle of a jungle and is a bit of a drive the the popular west and south sides of the island, perfect location for the Road to Hana and some of the smaller towns in the Upcountry. Because it's in the middle of a jungle there are wildlife which I think Eve mentions in the description, roosters crowing, little critters making noises and lots of birds and such. The hot water is a little short sided but that might depend on how many other occupants are on the property, the week we were there it was full. There is a washer/dryer that was handy, a small blow dryer, an iron and beach towels available as well as anything you'd need in a kitchen. Overall, it was a great experience and we'd stay again.

Comments: The Gingerbread Cottage is a charming, clean, quiet, and peaceful little house in the middle of a very unique, rainforest property. We thought the cottage was the perfect home base for exploring every inch of Maui. The cottage was visually appealing and well kept. The aromatic cedar paneling throughout the house gives a rustic appeal; the bathroom is pure modern pleasure! The property around the cottage is fascinating; lush and full of an amazing variety of plants and trees. There are bananas, tangerines, lemons, papayas, coconuts, and more—and you are encouraged to taste-test what you find! Eve and Steve shared an avocado with us, grown on the property. The avocado was as big as our four fists put together and tasted like butter. Yummy! Speaking of Eve and Steve (and Bodhi)…very welcoming, laid back, accomplished individuals! They are so generous to share their lovely property with those of us lucky enough to happen upon it. We would stay again, in a heartbeat. Final note: some have commented that the eco-water heater is less than ideal, but we had no problems at all with the amount or temperature of the water during our showers.

Everything was perfect from the moment we arrived (our only request for next time is extra visits from Bodhi the dog!). The house was easy to find, check in was simple, Eve met us in person and gave a detailed intro to the house and property. The home was beautiful, clean, smelled wonderful, and had everything available that you would need including beach towels, umbrella, styrofoam cooler, coffee pot, fridge, toaster oven, working internet and cell phone service. Comments: Wow, this place was awesome. We stayed in the gingerbread house for our honeymoon and loved it. If you're looking to stay off the beaten path on Maui, this is your place. Away from the touristy crowds of West Maui, the house is secluded and among beautiful greenery in the upcountry. It's close the the tiny town of Makawao, a hidden gem, with cute shops and restaurants. Eve was so accommodating and the house was equipped with everything we needed. Comments: Beautiful is not what makes this place special. Sure, it’s gorgeous, but gorgeous is what Maui is supposed to be about. For my Jennie and me, the thing that made this gingerbread house so memorable was the way we transformed between arrival and departure. We came preoccupied and left at peace. Much of this can be attributed to the little gingerbread house itself (for which you will find reviews aplenty herein), but the true difference was Eve and her little labyrinth. We came and experienced the unexpected and departed more than we were. I can’t promise the same for you, but I can, and do hope.

Comments: My husband and I had a wonderful stay. Our experience on Maui was definitely enhanced by the charm of the gingerbread house. The serenity and comfortably cooler climate upcountry was a nice change from the hustle and bustle and heat along the beaches in Kaanapali. The property itself is very peaceful as a place to relax and tune out the world. It is exactly the place to retreat if you are looking for a setting that will help keep your "real world" stresses from finding you on the island. While we found the property serene, we did not find it too isolated. We found it conveniently located for exploring all over the island. I would definitely stay here again on a return trip to Maui.

It is the place for you. Our four day stay was excellent in every respect. Eve and Steven are great hosts, and just about anything you might need during your stay is provided in the cottage, which is located in Maui's uplands, about 15-20 minutes from Paia and Haiku. The cottage is warm and welcoming, plenty of room for couples. You'll have decent wi-fi access (we streamed a Netflix movie one rainy night) and access to the jungle like grounds. The adjacent Sacred Garden and labyrinth(s) are a must do. Eve and Steve are warm and exceptionally welcoming people/hosts, who were available to answer questions and helped set up massages, readings and a tour of the Island's spiritual sites with community practitioners. Yes, it is a working place, so you will also be experiencing roosters, chickens and the occasional visit by the biggest and friendliest dog you've ever seen. We loved it and are already planning our return experience.

Comments: Gorgeous, lush property! Feels very secluded but is not far from town. Location was central to the many activities we planned that were spread out on the island. We had a moderate drive to most of our destinations. The perfect blend of convenience and solitude. I was travelling with my 12 year old son, but this would also be a nice choice for couples. Quiet, beautiful property, nice breezes, the wonderful sound of rain on the tile roof, sounds of nature. The time we spent just lounging in our room was far more relaxing than a hotel room or condo could have been. For me the lack of air conditioning was not ideal. Being from Texas I am accustomed to enduring much hotter temperatures than Maui also with very high humidity. But I am a person who likes my indoor climate cool and comfy. I do not put on a sweater or jacket at the hint of temps below 70 degrees. The indoors was certainly tolerable. I was never uncomfortable. Especially when I was able to open both doors for nice cross ventilation. But if there had been A/C I would have run it at times. If you prefer your space well conditioned this could be a consideration. Overall, wonderful trip, great property, and an accomodating host!

Comments: Eve was out of town and we worked with Fiona during our stay. Fiona was kind and very helpful, greeting us when we arrived and offering help and assistance when we needed it. The house is cute, we enjoyed how secluded it was and the pretty views out the windows. The property has a ton of fruit trees and chickens and roosters. We should note the roosters crow at any time day or night, but they were usually relatively quiet until dawn. I used ear plugs which helped. We also visited the Sacred Garden and enjoyed the peaceful greenhouse and walked the labyrinth. Truly a unique experience which added to our trip to Maui. Also note, the wifi is not very reliable and I would consider yourself unplugging for a few days while you are staying there. We were there at a rainy part of the season as well and it rained a fair bit the whole three days of our stay. I don't think we realized we would need to prepare for rain but you are in essentially a rainforest at this location, just something to be aware of.

Comments: This is a cozy property that serves as a great starting point for exploring the Road to Hana, Paia, and Makawao. While a studio, the space is adequate even with large suitcases and we appreciated the chest of drawers in the bathroom so we could strategize our unpacking. As mentioned in the description, this is a working farm and as such, roosters do crow. They didn’t bother us particularly but if you are one to sleep in late, keep this in mind. The property is lovely and many locals knew the Sacred Garden and had wonderful things to say about the labyrinth and succulents. We had wonderful meals in the area and would recommend the Gingerbread House as a base in Upcountry Maui.

Comments: The Gingerbread house was definitely one of the highlights of our trip! My wife and I split our honeymoon into two parts (which we highly recommend). The first part was our stay on the Hana side of Maui in the gingerbread house and the second part was on the resort side in Lahaina. Being on the Hana side of the island for a few days was breathtaking! It is so lush, green, and beautiful! The Gingerbread house sits amongst the beautiful lushness of Maui's east side. It is secluded, and quiet. The property is on an acre or so of lush green gardens and we were even lucky enough to see the stream come in the back of the property! If you want a place that is away from all of the tourists, is quiet, peaceful, and beautiful (think Jurassic Park lush green), than this place is it! There are two things that are worth noting. 1. There are chickens and roosters on the property. Maui's east side is full of animal life, cows, horses, and chickens (you will find wild chickens everywhere). So this is to be expected and really does add to the ambiance of you being in the environment. We enjoyed it. 2. There are two other homes on the property, but we never ran into anyone or were disturbed in any way by others. Again, this place is quiet and private, but you are not the only one on these couple acres. I thought those two things were worth mentioning. They are not downsides! Just information to help your decision, that's why you're reading this review isn't it? We loved our stay here and would highly recommend it! Plus, Eve is excellent at communicating and so so hospitable! It was a pleasure staying here!

Comments: The gingerbread house was the best decision we made on our trip to Maui!! Eve was the most gracious and considerate host. The location is central enough that it is very easy to get to any part of the island, but secluded enough where you don't feel like a tourist. The house was so comfortable and had everything we needed to cook in if we wanted or to just relax. The property is so beautiful. I recommend picking fresh citrus and have coffee by the stream each morning. This place is really the perfect peaceful retreat to get away from it all. We thoroughly enjoy our stay here and cannot wait to return!!

Comments: Incredibly unique place in the Maui jungle. Comfortable bed and lots of amenities- laundry supplies, kitchenette, beach gear, etc. Nearby Makawao is a great town and it’s not far to Baldwin Beach. Eve is helpful and has an awesome spot called Sacred Garden next door. Overall I recommend it and would stay again!

Comments: Eve is a great host. I loved everything about the gingerbread cottage and the surrounding environment. If you desire a relaxing escape from the sometimes hectic pace in today’s society, look no further than what Eve has to offer. After an adventurous day exploring the rest of Maui, this is an (Website hidden by Airbnb) oasis where you can find true inner peace and be “one” with nature. You won’t be disappointed. You will leave with a better appreciation of what “Aloha” really means.

Comments: The Gingerbread House is quaint, quiet and the quintessential hideout from the tourist scene. You can visit Lahaina’s resorts and old town, but retreat to Eve’s Sacred Garden for respite. Makawao, Haiku, Paeia, and Kula are close as are great beaches like Hookipu and the Haleakala climb.

Comments: Joni Mitchell wrote in her song, Woodstock, about getting ourselves back to the garden. This retreat does just that. It is a perfect place to decompress from our 21st century lives. The cottage is perfect for learning how simple life can be.you are surrounded by natural beauty and an abundance of fruit trees which your host, Eve, shares with guests. We found it a perfect place to relax after our travel fom the east coast of the USA. The body has a chance to acclimate to natural rhythms, and the mind drifts away. If you need to shop, dine out, etc. you are minutes from that as well. The cottage is well stocked, clean, and has ample utility to prepare simple meals. Only the cook top was a bit small for our liking, as we enjoy preparing most of our own dinners.

Comments: The Gingerbread House really is 'adorable'. The space is perfectly furnished and accomodates everything you could possibly need. Eve was a great host and communication was easy. The Sacred Garden next-door is such a lovely chilled place to spend some time. We had expected not to be able to spend evenings outside because of the mozzies but we seemed to be lucky and found there were very few so we enjoyed a glass of wine down by the river bed watching the wild roosters and birds. We loved shopping for food at Mana Foods in Pa'ia and particularly the General Store at Makawao where we seemed to find more local produce. It's easy to reach the Haleakala crater and Hana Road from here.

Comments: I loved staying at Eve's beautiful home. It is well appointed, with everything you can think of - perfectly clean, with plenty of towels, plenty of beach gear, delicious coffee for the morning, and a perfect bed. There is a lovely porch behind the house to spend blissful mornings, and the delight of being woken at first light by roosters, and going to sleep under a thousand stars was magical. Everything has been thought of. The town of Makawao is wonderful to explore, and the Forest Reserve Loop hike is heaven. The house is perfectly situated both to explore Maui's spectacular upcountry, or take a swim on some pretty special beaches. If you do manage to leave the property (which is a challenge as the idea of curling up in one of the well-placed adirondack chairs at the stream bed outside your door is hard to resist), Eve's guidebook is really helpful, with great directions to everything you'll want to do / go / be near / see. Pro tip - be sure to stock up on papayas at the General Store because you won't want to leave! Thank you!!!!!!!!

Comments: This was one of the best accommodations we had on Maui! The space is beautifully designed, very clean, and has a lot of great amenities including washer and drier, BBQ, fully stocked kitchen, and even a juicer for when you accidentally buy way too much tropical fruit. The property itself is gorgeous and we had a lot of fun exploring the Sacred Garden next door. Eve was a wonderful host and was always just a text message away if we needed anything. Comments: The Gingerbread cottage is a wonderful getaway located in upcountry Makawao. From the moment you step inside you immediately know that this is a very special place. Just outside the backdoor is a small patio area with table and chairs, and a free standing chiminea fire pit. Outside you are surrounded by lush forest, plants and fruit trees. A stream flows through the property depending on the amount of rain received. It is is both peaceful and relaxing. Inside, a gentle breeze comes in through the windows throughout the day. On a cloud free and moonless night you can see lots of stars through a large picture window above the kitchen area. One point of interest is a painting of Jimi Hendrix hanging in the bathroom. Rumor has it that he once stayed there while filming Rainbow Bridge. Ask Eve about that! There is no television but you won't miss it. It's a vacation after all. Everything else is there that you could possibly need. Warning. There are a lot of roosters on the island (there seems to be three for every hen) and you will hear them crowing not just in the morning but also at night. The sound carries in a eerily way so if this is a deal breaker then you may want to stay in a hotel on another island. Finally, this is our second stay here and we plan on coming again. You will find that Eve is a delightful host with a cheery smile! She greeted us with open arms and made us feel both welcome and at home. Mahalo!

Eve also provided a binder that gave great local suggestions for all sorts of different things (I.e. food, beaches, hikes). The cottage was a cozy little place perfect for two people, and only 10-15 min from the beach and town. My wife and I also loved the chickens! They were super friendly and fun to watch and listen to. Great location for exploring the haleakala crater and for getting to see Paia. Also proved a great spot for when we left to journey the road to Hana. Comments: The review of our experience at Eve's place can only be very positive. We thoroughly enjoyed our first trip to up country rather than spend all our time as usual at busy beach resorts. What an eye opening experience of time to be spent on the island. Our choice to try One of Eve's cottages, in this case the Gingerbread House, was the highlite of our long trip. Her Photos and explanation of of the property were right on but being there yourself is something else! The peaceful surroundings, island feel, and beauty everywhere you look (or wonder) was really special. The location, next door to The Sacred Garden and short drive to the small local villages was an experience we WILL revisit and we WILL reach out to Eve for accomidation. For us, Eve's Up Country Gingerbread House is JUST what we needed, and didn't even know! Give something besides the beaches a go for once. You will NOT be disappointed. A GREAT getaway here.....and she has others just as fine too! We loved it

Comments: My husband and I stayed here for our honeymoon and loved it! Eve was a great host and left plenty of information regarding the home and it’s surrounding areas, which made our stay very easy. There is no tv, but we didn’t mind at all since we spent most of our days out of the house exploring the island and by the time we got back we wanted to relax and sleep. Eve provided plenty of towels, extra linens, beach essentials, yummy coffee and cookies, as well as plates, utensils, pots, pans, mugs and cups. There is a microwave, table-top toaster oven and hot plate with 2 burners in case you wanted to cook at the house. Pretty much anything you may need! The property was beautiful and the Sacred Garden is a must visit! We will definitely be back someday.

Comments: Eve’s place is as advertised! A cute little place in a lush garden. She has thought of many things you will need and almost everything you could think of is available. She’s very knowledgeable about the island and is able to answer all of your questions. The only negative is the roosters that crow beginning around 2:00 am. Otherwise - the place is paradise!

Comments: My wife and I just spent a week at the Ginger Bread House and we loved it. We were really surprised with the amenities that Eve made available in the house. From the beach chairs, games, goggles, towels to the toiletries it was the little things that made our stay welcoming. The lot is beautiful and the people are very friendly. A couple of tips to make your stay even better are to bring ear plugs. The roosters are great but they crow very early in the morning. Use the mosquito repellent. No explanation needed. No AC unit so the house can get warm during the day. You can open the windows and use the fan but the house will still be warm. Other than that we enjoyed our stay and definitely recommend it.

Comments: The minute you walk into the gated property you are surrounded by beauty. Eve took the time to sit down with Camelia and I and explain so many things about the island of Maui which was great for a couple first timers. Our cute little cabin withstood hurricane Lane so do fear that it doesn't have strong bones. Eve also runs a snorkeling/scuba trip which I would highly recommend. You get a great local feel vs. getting onto a large boat with 50 other tourists. The accommodations in the small cabin are endless. If you are looking for a more local upcountry feel and don't need to be next to a beach this is the place for you. The labyrinth is a great piece of art, there is endless amount of work done to it and is a very cool piece to an already beautiful area. I cant enough about how wonderful our trip was to the cabin. We will be back.

Comments: We knew we did not want to stay at a resort for our first trip to Maui so when we found the Adorable Garden Gingerbread House we fell for it right away (the nod to Jimmy Hendrix didn't hurt, either). We wanted a relaxed environment, a chance to meet locals, and see the island. So as we made our way from the big city airport, up roads that became more rural, with vegetation growing right up to the edge of the road, we knew we'd made the right decision. And then you see the cottage; it is every bit adorable as you see in the photos. The fainting couch is the best seat to view the monkey pod tree from the very large window. We ate most meals out but we made coffee and had cereal at the cottage. There are two grocery stores in Makawao and Haiku, two very close towns. You must walk the grounds to appreciate life in a rain forest: bananas, pomegranates, coffee beans, and I think other fruits are growing within 50' of the cottage door. The trickling stream came alive one night from a tropical storm that flooded parts of the beach areas but at 1000', didn't bother us; we were still acclimating to the time change so it just made for good sleeping. We were very grateful for Steve's two minute Hawaiian language course. Between the land and the language, you really know you're someplace else. We had a car so getting around the island from Makawao was really easy. It's all true about the tropical climate (that things don't dry well) so get yourself some breathable tropical clothing. People there mostly wear bathing suits/coverups anyway. It's also true that the chickens are wild and everywhere on the island (except the volcano). They're just like squirrels where we come from except some of them crow and not just at sunrise. But we loved our chicken family and I swear we saw the three baby chicks grow in the week we were there. They're not afraid of humans and were like a welcoming committee. Maui, Makawao, this cottage - it was all perfect for us. My favorite bumper sticker said, "Slow down. It's not the mainland". Maui's really laid back so come to this cottage and relax. Mahalo, Eve & Steve!

Comments: It’s just as charming as you can imagine!! Honestly one of our favorite parts was the chickens all over! The sacred garden was a lovely place to visit and the house was beautiful and peaceful. The only thing we had just a touch of a complaint was the cedar smell. Don’t get me wrong, we both love the smell of fresh wood and everything, it was just a tad overwhelming. Again, just a personal preference, but overall we very much enjoyed our stay.

Comments: my husband and I had a great stay at the gingerbread Cottage. It was extremely clean and had almost everything we needed. the bed was super comfortable and we had access to a washing machine and dryer every single day at no additional charge. Eve was even kind enough to leave Tide Pods for us to do our laundry. The bathroom was super roomy and we had plenty of storage space for our belongings. There were plenty of pots pans dishes and goodies for us when we got there. I thought it was very kind that they left Maui macadamia nut cookies and Maui coffee for us at no additional charge because hotels would charge you an arm and a leg for those additional amenities. we were also provided with boogie boards and yoga mats as well as a beach umbrella which was awesome because many resorts or hotels charge fees for those things and we thought it was really cool that Eve provided it with no additional charge. the property is nice because we truly felt like we were living like the locals but because of our location we were still close enough to enjoy all of the touristy Maui activities without having to travel too far. The gingerbread Cottage is literally like living in a jungle and the property is just gorgeous. there are mosquitoes and cane spiders ( which are huge) but we never saw a spider in our room and as long as we remembered to put bug spray on we never dealt with any mosquito problems. whenever we needed anything from toilet paper to ear earplugs to printed out boarding passes for a boat that we signed up to go for a sail on, eve was right there..... always responding within minutes of us reaching out to her and always helping us out within the hour. She was truly a very attentive host. She also has the sweetest golden retriever puppy we really enjoyed loving on and a secret garden that's open to the public that my husband and I really enjoyed visiting which is a must see when you're there. there are only a few things worth mentioning that might be bothersome for some people depending on what you expect out of the accommodations and I will mention those here. first thing is the shower. Everything on Maui is expensive so everyone has energy-efficient everything. Therefore, the shower only heats up for a couple of minutes. Eve says in her welcome book that the hot water lasts for 6 minutes but it feels a little shorter than that. she also says it only takes 10 minutes to heat up again after it gets cold but that's not true either. It takes a lot longer than 10 minutes to heat up again. So if you're the type of person that wants to take a nice long hot shower or if you're a couple and you guys want to shower immediately after each other, thats not going to happen at this Cottage. If my husband and I didn't take a shower together, we had to put aside about an extra hour or hour and a half so we could both have hot showers before we headed out. next, We were on our honeymoon so we didn't need a TV. But we were informed there was a TV and while there was no cable there was a DVD player so we thought we could watch our movies. but when we got there, there was no TV or DVD player in the room. so there is NO tv whatsoever. people should also know that there is no air conditioning and while Makawao is usually 10 degrees cooler than the outer parts of the island because it's UpCountry, there were still nights that I woke up in a sweat because I was hot. We weren't miserable or anything but there were definitely some days that especially when trying to sleep it would have been nice to have access to air conditioning and not just a stand-up fan. the only other thing that might drive people a little nuts is the Roosters. Wherever you go on the island of Maui there are wild chickens and roosters everywhere. So there's tons of these feathery guys on Eves property as they are a farm. we truly loved our feathery friends and we truly felt we bonded with them and they really didn't bother us initially..... but after about day 6 or 7 of waking up to our favorite rooster doing his morning rooster call at 4 a.m. we we're starting to get a little Punchy because we were losing sleep. So we had to reach out to Eve and she was kind enough to give us earplugs which helped me a lot but didn't really help my husband. so anyone that would have a problem with a rooster call at 4 am, you should reach out to eve before you get there and let her know that you want her to lure those chickens and roosters to another part of the property before you get there. also it's a little hard to get a decent Wi-Fi signal out there. like I said, we were on our honeymoon so the things I mentioned in here were very minor for us and didnt bother us at all really.... but depending on what you're hoping to get out of your stay we thought we should mention them because technology and basic things like long hot showers are taken for granted and people may not realize how important it is to them until they don't have access to it. We really like to be detached from everyone and everything and we don't like to be doted on and we aren't Resort people, so the things I mentioned were fine for us but for people that are typically Resort people, it may be quite the adjustment. personally, we absolutely loved our stay and we're talking about trying...

Comments: Eve’s cottage is great if you are looking for a peaceful place to stay in Maui. If you are looking for a place away from a lot of other tourists and in a more rural environment, this would be it! The scenery is beautiful and the cottage is very nice. My husband and I loved the chickens, but if you are someone who would be irritated at chickens crowing at 5 am or earlier, this may not be the environment for you. They kept us on a great schedule for the week, especially since the sun goes down early in Maui. Eve added extra touches, such as coffee, cookies, beach towels, and bug spray, which were all very much appreciated and used. The cottage does not have a TV, but who needs one when you can watch the geckos on the windows at night and look at the beautiful scenery? Great stay! Very relaxing. We recommend.

Comments: We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Eve’s adorable Gingerbread house! It was exactly how we imagined it would be. So quaint and perfect for our 3 nights in the “up country”. Eve was such a gracious host and took a lot of time showing us around the grounds and giving us the history on the place. It was in a great location. Short drive down to Paia to the ocean to watch awesome surfers. And a quick drive into the cute town of Makawao for great restaurants and cute shops. Also easy access to the Road to Hana and watching the Sunrise at the Summit. With our short stay we didn’t eat in but enjoyed the nice touches of coffee and treats Eve left us. Loved the Roosters mulling around but be aware they do make noises early in the morning (even at 2am) but that didn’t bother us much as it helped us get an early start to our days. Plus our noise cancelling headphones help . The bed was very comfortable and loved the cooler weather at night with all the windows open. Would definitely stay here again. Mahalo Eve!
