Comments: Loved our stay here! The place captured the feel of the Harlem era. We even got to hear a live jazz practice one of the nights. The place was clean, nicely decorated and the bed was comfy. Overall a great experience.

Comments: After a long day in busy, busy NYC it's wonderful to come back to a room that transports you to a simpler, quieter time. Fantastic price, great location, great shower - both pressure and temperature sensitivity - but be careful on the carpeted stairs! They're slippery in socks:)

Comments: My partner and I stayed here for two nights on a recent trip to NYC, and we couldn't have been happier. This place is the stuff AirBnB dreams are made of. The peaceful vibe throughout the Harlem Flophouse was a welcome respite from a chaotic week of trip planning. We arrived with just enough time to get ready and make a show we had tickets for, but I would have been happy to have dropped our bags and wandered around the house. The room was much bigger than I expected, with beautiful polished wood floors and large windows that allowed the natural light to showcase all of the interesting and quirky details that made this place so memorable. My favorite little detail (that I never would have noticed had René not pointed it out) were the cigarette burn marks in the wood mantle over the decorative fireplace-remnants of the house's rich history, lovingly and respectfully preserved. As far as the actual logistics, we left our car in a garage just around the corner. The subway was a short walk away, and a quick ride into Times Square. The bed was super comfy (oh god, the comforter!). The bathroom was beautiful, with a claw foot tub and incredible water pressure (there's another cool little detail in the ceiling above the toilet-don't forget to look!). There's also an additional sink in the room, which is great. René was easy to get in touch with and very responsive. Oh, one thing to note- if you're a lover of makeup, bring a little travel mirror and take advantage of the light by the windows. At the risk of sounding like the most touristy tourist ever, it was great to feel like we were getting a taste of the "real" New York City, without the flashy corporate packaging of the "Times Square Experience." Anyway, we loved it, and will certainly be back. Thanks for a great stay, René!

Comments: René has a gorgeous home. I would recommend to anyone coming to New York for a romantic weekend. The lighting in our room was magnificent and the decoration thought the whole home was very fitting. The house is close to public transit as well as walking distance to many lovely restaurants and shops. We will be visiting again for sure!

Comments: Had a nice stay at this place. This airb&b is for a room only and access to shared bathrooms. One thing I loved was the ease to check-in and out. One thing I didn't like was how noisy everything is (it's old I get that) but the floor and stairs crack with every step, bed is noisy.... The other guests were really mindful of the noise but everyone could hear everything. It is very well situated.

Comments: We had a nice stay in Harlem. The room is in walking distance from restaurants and bar, as well as several subway lines that will connect you to any sight or attraction in NY. The vintage interior fits perfectly in the brownstone building.

Comments: We loved this place. The common areas are gorgeous, the room is spacious and well-decorated and comfortable. René was a great host; not much interaction with him (but we like to just do our own thing, generally) but he was very friendly and accommodating. Check-in was a breeze and we even had help from his friendly cat Phoebe. Note that this is a heritage building with mostly period decor and amenities. We had no issues whatsoever with this, but others may be looking for something more modern. Temperature control, for instance, may be an issue for some. We were there during a cool, rainy week so it was not an issue but it seemed like the 3rd-floor room might be a bit hot in the heat of summer. Can't be sure, though. I've stayed in close to half a dozen NYC airbnbs now, and this was the closest I've been to the subway. The nearest station is just a 2-minute walk away and the A, B, C, and D trains stop there. The next nearest is a 5-minute walk away and the 2 and 3 trains stop there. Plus, if you're considering using the M60 bus to/from LaGuardia, it stops at the aforementioned stations as well. You are very connected to all of Manhattan and NYC in general at this location, despite not being anywhere near midtown or lower Manhattan. As for proximity to food/nightlife/sightseeing, we didn't check out much in the area since we had visited Harlem before and checked out some other stuff around NYC instead. That said, we grabbed breakfast at Bo's Bagels on nearby 116th st. every morning (highly recommended!) and there seemed to be a number of other dining options around there. And there is certainly fun and food to be had in the greater Harlem area. We felt relatively safe in the neighbourhood and had no trouble. Ignore what you hear about Harlem's reputation esp. from those who haven't been to NY in years (or at all). Although 125th st. is often filled with activity (and not all of it on the up-and-up) at all hours of the night, the rest of the area is just a residential neighbourhood, full of families and people of all ages just going about their lives. I mean, as with anywhere you're thinking of staying in a city like NY, do your research and make sure that the area is for you. Overall, if you want a historic Harlem/New York experience, you simply must check this place out, but be aware of what is offered and what you're looking for in a stay.

Comments: What an amazing home Rene has! So charming and beautifully cared for. Right in the middle of Harlem. We had a fantastic meal just a block away at Clay one night and will remember it for some time. Rene himself was very easy to communicate with and he was incredibly patient when I was delayed on arrival. Highly recommended for anyone visiting NYC who wants to be uptown and close to Central Park.

Comments: Staying at René's gave us great access to so much that Manhattan has to offer. Thanks to René for suggesting the Paris Blues jazz club. Saturday lunch at Sylvia's soul food between an excellent Harlem walking tour & a visit to Studio Museum Harlem was a great way to spend our final day. NY was hot this W/E & we sizzled through our last night in Thelonious Monk. Overall a great experience

Comments: Wonderful location if you want to stay in uptown. Easy access to the nearby subway stations. René has a lovely cat, Phoebe. She always welcomed us at the door which was really heart-warming. This could be a huge plus point if you're a cat lover. We'll miss her so much. We love this picturesque house for its decor. We've been to different bnb before but this is probably the most well-designed house that we've ever stayed. Our room is on the third floor so if you have heavy luggage, the stairs might cause some problems. Wifi connection is relatively weak upstairs. It's a wonderful stay after all.

Comments: The room is in a stylish old brown stone house in the heart of Harlem. It's a comfy and vintage atmosphere. There's bars, restaurants and shops within walking distance. During our stay, everything was well organized and clean. The host Rene is a very friendly and easy going guy. We felt welcome all the time and totally recommend it.

Comments: Pros: The architecture of this beautiful house was stunning. The other guests were very quiet and respectful. The location was convenient to the subway and to some good restaurants. Owner was responsive and allowed us to check in a little bit early. Cons: The decor was very cheaply done, very dusty, and VERY racist. On the mantle in our bedroom was an array of antique porcelain and tin banks. The largest of these, right next to a pink chihuahua in a wig, was a blackface/Pickaninny bank (a black face with a cartoonish expression and bright red lips, ready to lift coins into his mouth by a mechanical hand). Downstairs in the common room were multiple objects depicting black boys with watermelons. My girlfriend and I were made very uncomfortable by the atmosphere these decorations created, and we wish we had been warned about it sooner.

Comments: Very cool, very retro, period row house. Super clean and well taken care of and is decorated very eclectically fitting with the intended motif. Awesome space. Logistically, it is close to Columbia and the delights of Harlem...but is removed from the rest of the city a piece. Plan on a larger than normal Uber payment or get used to the subway if you plan on traveling around the city a lot. Not the less, I knew where it was it it was a pleasure to stay there.

Comments: A quirky place located within an easy walk to the subway and historic locations. The neighborhood was much quieter than I expected. Be ready to walk some stairs, and take slippers or socks with grips on them because the stairs inside are both steep, and narrow. The curved landing is especially tricky if you aren't very careful. The bathroom on each floor is shared, which was fine because there was a sink in my room making things more private and convenient. In keeping with the decor, the sinks had separate hot and cold taps which is very cute, if a bit annoying for those used to more modern plumbing. Parking was an issue as it is everywhere else in Manhattan, so be aware of this if you are driving in.

Comments: This is a unique lodging experience. The neighborhood is quiet at night and the house is a classic Brownstone. The bedrooms are generous in size, uniquely furnished and the mattress and pillows very good. The house exudes its historic character and you feel as tough you are transported to the 1920s or 30s. Steps creak, soft jazz plays in the reception area and the bathrooms are generous in size. For subway riders, the stop is less than three blocks away and it is an easy trip down Manhattan on either the local or express trains. Not too many restaurants in the immediate vicinity but several in walking distance. Great music nearby. I felt very safe walking the area at night and in the day. Whole Foods Market is nearby. For an eclectic and off-beat experience, I recommend this location. My only request is that the room would benefit from an easy chair in place of one of the two straight-back chairs. I would stay here again when traveling to New York City.

Comments: We had an amazing trip and our stay here was perfect! We highly recommend this house. I love that they had a sink in the room. I love the vibe of the place. My husband who is definitely more of a hotel guy, still loved the feeling of stepping back in time. It’s clean, the bed was comfy, and communication was great. I personally feel the pictures don’t give justice to the place. It’s much cuter in person! Thank you for a great stay!!!

The place is in walking distance to a Whole Foods, great restaurants and night spots, as well as close to the subway lines for easy rides to anywhere in the City. I highly recommend Rene’s if you want to check out Harlem or just looking for a comfortable place to stay in NYC.

Comments: Had an amazing experience staying at The Harlem Flophouse in the Thelonious Monk room. The room is huge! I loved exploring Harlem and eating some good food at Sylvia’s just a short walk away The subway is close so it was quick to get downtown when we wanted. Last time I stayed in Manhattan, I stayed in a hotel room that barely had walking room to get around the bed. Our room was clean and spacious. It’s lovely to go to NY in April before it gets too hot out. All the details of the house are just fantastic. Little treasures to be seen in many books. Very fun. Gave the whole trip a special kind of feel.

Comments: This is a beautiful Airbnb! I stayed in two different rooms during my stay and each is unique and spacious. The whole place is extremely clean. The shower has great water pressure and the bathtub is lovely if you decide to take a bath. Harlem is a fun neighborhood (go eat at Red Rooster) and Réne even sent out emails with weekly events around town. Very close to the subway, a 24 hour grocery and a Pilates studio if you wanna sneak in a workout. The jazz playing when you come in the door is a nice touch. I loved my stay and would visit again!

Comments: René's place is a beautiful, traditional Brownstone located on a pretty tree-lined street in Harlem - peaceful away from the excitement and buzz of the area. My room was quirkily decorated and welcoming, with nice touches such as a map of the local area and a radio playing cool music when I arrived. I was kindly allowed to check out late. Cannot recommend this place enough - I loved it!

Comments: This is a remarkably comfortable place to stay. It is beautiful and charming and spacious, but what really stood out to me is how it compares so favorably to other hotels and bed and breakfasts that aim towards historical accuracy. Many such places are drafty and uncomfortable with poor temperature control, but René’s is warm and cozy, even with the super chilly weather outside. Also, the bathtub is large and amazing.
