Summary: At 180 sq ft, "the shoebox" is aptly named, but as they say in real estate "location. location. location." Close to the highline, the whitney, the javits center, restaurants and west chelsea galleries, entertainment and business is at our door. Subways and buses are also nearby. The bed is comfy, the shower is hot (there is NOT a bathtub), there is an elevator (i'm on the 4th floor), vibe is cozy, and yes the ceiling is high. My place is good for solo adventurers and business travelers alike.

Space: a few more details.... there is no bathtub but the shower is strong and hot. please note you may need to let the water run a few minutes to get hot water. there is WiFi but there is NOT a TV

Neighborhood Overview: IMO there is no better neighborhood in Manhattan. entrance to the Highline is on our corner. the best galleries in NYC are all within a few blocks. the new Whitney Museum in a 10 minute walk as are subways, buses and Penn Station. Restaurants, cool shopping, the Chelsea Market... oh I could go on and on!

Notes: the hours for arrival and departure are a guide. i am always happy to be flexible and do my best to accommodate your travel needs. sometimes there's another guest on either side of you that will dictate what is possible, but i try, so always ask! cheers, karen

Transit:

Access: upon entry of building there is an open staircase. do not fear, continue to the right and down a short hallway is a passenger elevator. comes in handy and greatly appreciated by those guests with a suitcase!!

Interaction: I am very responsive and just a text message away.

House Rules: please be discreet. Airbnb is controversial in New York and while my building is friendly to the usage, I ask guests to simply say they are my (Karen's) guests and nothing more. it is rare and unusual that anyone would ever ask.

Comments: The "sho‎ebox" is just that, really small and suitable only for a single person not staying too long. There is no TV. The host, Karen, is pleasant, the apartment is clean and the location perfect for the Highline and Chelsea Market. And the big plus for a fourth-floor apartment: there is an elevator.

  • Reviewer: Jessica

Comments: Had a great stay at Karen's apartment. It was clean, organized, comfortable and was a great size for one person. The location was perfect walking distance to many great places in Chelsea and the meatpacking district, not to mention very close to the High line. Would definitely stay again!

Comments: My late flight in and early departure were accommodated. The apartment was beautiful, clean, and in a great part of town. I am a light sleeper, so the street noise and wind rattling through the older windows was a little tough. Overall though, I had a really great stay! Would highly recommend.

Comments: Karen was a great hostess, I didn't meet her but she set up everything precisely. I do recomend this place for singles or couples. The pictures shows exactly like this charming, I would say , small estudio , looks like. Pretty charming, cleaning and renewed. Much bigger than most of the rooms in NY's hotels. The bathroom is tight but very clean but since I went to NY to spend most of the time out, its size didn't matter for me. And besides that the neighborhood is perfect ! The street is quite and safe, walking distance to Meatpacking , the High Line is just few steps away and is full of art galleries , cafes, restaurants around . I had a delightful stay in the "shoebox". PS: Karen has good taste for art and furniture, loved the chairs ...;)

Comments: Karen's apartment is fantastic value for money- small but very well maintained, clean, tidy and in one of the best locations in NYC. From the first moment I reached out to Karen right through to check out, Karen was very responsive and did everything to accommodate me. I highly this apartment to anybody wishing to have a genuine and comfortable NYC experience.

Comments: Karen was terrific, she was responsive and accomodating at all times. I was met by her friend and welcomed to the apt. which was extremely cute and had a wonderful view of the Empire State which made me feel at home. Brilliant to have an elevator and it is in a cool building in a great area close to the Highline. Thank you Karen.

Comments: The Shoebox has everything! It's right in the heart of Chelsea, a really short walk to restaurants, delis, bodegas, bars, the train... literally everything you need is no more than a 5 min. walk away. And you can see the Empire State Building from your window! As far as the room, it's New York-sized and has everything you need for your stay. I was here for a week on business and found it absolutely perfect for everything I was looking for. Bed very comfortable, desk nice and big to spread out, large refrigerator, comfy chairs, etc. Mirek met me right on time for check-in and was so friendly and kind. He even stuck around to answer my many questions and by the end, felt like an old friend. Karen was great, as well: She checked in a few times before my travel day, once I was settled and just before checkout, to make sure I didn't need anything. My emails were answered lightning-fast and Karen was so nice! As far as the surroundings, I'm 35 and a single female, and never once did I feel the slightest bit awkward walking around, whether it was 3 pm or 3 am. Chelsea is a fantastic, friendly and clean place, long one of my favorites. Couple things to remember: This IS New York, so even though you're on the fourth floor, you will hear the traffic (fire engines, construction, passersby) from your window. I left my window open to embrace all the neat sounds, but if you need complete silence during your stay... well, New York isn't the place for you in the first place! There is no TV here. Karen *does* mention it very clearly in her description, but I thought I should throw it out there again. I travel here fairly often for business and I've yet to find a more affordable, clean, beautiful apartment that's so close to everything and close to work at the same time. Highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a genuine New York-Chelsea experience. You will NOT be disappointed!

Comments: This studio was amazing. Close to the Highline and all public transportation and accessible to all the good restaurants. The host was amazing and was a great communicator. The place was clean, the bed comfortable and had everything I needed. The wifi was fast too. Will definitely stay there again! Also the studio is on such a pretty street.

  • Reviewer: Jen

Comments: The Shoebox was a pleasure! Right in the heart of Chelsea, affordable, and neat. Karen was a great communicator, anticipating our arrival and departure and giving clear instructions. Would definitely stay here again!

  • Reviewer: Albert

Comments: I came to New York for my daughter’s graduation and I really enjoyed staying here. The studio is located in the Chelsea District and it was clean and had all the amenities I needed to for a comfortable stay. There are quite a few restaurants and shops all within a short walking distance. I also found the neighborhood at night to be quite and safe to walk in (There is a police station a block and a half up the street). Last but not least communicating with Karen was very easy. I would definitely stay here again.

  • Reviewer: C. Eric

Comments: Yeah, it's a little small, but don't let that fool you. Great location steps from the High Line, Whitney and lots of great galleries and restaurants. I stayed by myself for a little over a week, and it was just perfect! 100% endorsement here.

  • Reviewer: Sid

Comments: Karen's place was awesome. Right next to so many great restaurants, Chelsea market, steps from the Highline, and an amazing little French cafe with the best almond chocolate croissant EVER. Walking distance from Meatball Shop, Amorino Gelato (the one that makes a gelato cone into the shape of a rose), and close to the 2 and E trains. The space itself is, as described, very tiny. That shouldn't really bother anyone though, and we found it to be more than enough space for my girlfriend and I. Check-in was super easy and communication was great. Elevator was a very welcome feature! Last thing I'll note is that the street this apartment is on is so, so beautiful. Right out of a NY movie set. Would love to stay here again!

  • Reviewer: Cheryl

Comments: Karen's place was so perfect. It's very small, but it doesn't feel cramped at all, and it is incredibly clean and nicely furnished. The neighborhood is a lovely street of brownstones, and the location is fantastic, right in Chelsea a half block from an entrance to the High Line in one direction, a half block to a great French cafe in the other. The Whitney is a short walk along the High Line. Karen's communication was fantastic - the smallest of repairs needed to be done while I was there, and even though it was no bother at all, she was very apologetic and went out of her way to make sure I was not inconvenienced in any way. I will keep my fingers crossed that her place will be available the next time I visit New York!!

Comments: petit studio adapté à une personne seule ou un couple qui veut un pied-à-terre à Manhattan dans un endroit tranquille assez proche de tout Équipements nécessaires et suffisants j'ai beaucoup apprécié pour mon séjour seul d'une semaine

  • Reviewer: Kristin

Comments: Great stay. Unit is small as others mentioned but hey that's NYC and it has all that you need. Great location. Very walkable. High line entrance is 3 blks away. Karen was highly responsive to our needs and questions. Would stay again.

  • Reviewer: Matt

Comments: Karen's apartment was a great Manhattan crash pad. Right by the amazing high line it's in a great location and exactly as described. Mirek who greeted me had some good restaurant recommendations too: try Tressel on Tenth!

  • Reviewer: Nora

Comments: Muy buena ubicación en una de las cuadras más lindas de Chelsea. Muy buenos anfitriones, el avión se demoró y Mirek nos esperó hasta las 11 pm con una sonrisa y buenas recomendaciones de restaurantes. Gracias!!

  • Reviewer: Christena

Comments: Loved my stay at the Shoebox. Everything is as described, and quite comfortable and personal. Karen's friend Mirek has a ton of great suggestions for the neighborhood, everything within five blocks. It's super convenient location, but on a very quiet block and building. Great place for someone on their own to stay.

  • Reviewer: Tiffany

Comments: The shoebox was the perfect place to stay for my work trip! Karen was easy and so accommodating, especially as we arrived in New York in the early hours of the morning! The shoebox itself is clean and tidy, gives you everything you need. The bed was extremely comfortable. An amazing yoga studio is down the road which I used daily before working. There are great restaurants in walking distance. I highly recommend the shoebox and would happily stay there again. Thank you Karen!

  • Reviewer: Chuck

Comments: The shoebox location was perfect for exploring the city, attending shows, being touristy but also walking through Chelsea to the Chelsea market, the Highline is not even a block away and feeling safe and not crowded (for NYC). The apartment is exactly as described in the pics and has everything you need. Check in was super easy with Karen's friend Mirek. I stayed 3 nights and it felt like my home away from home in a matter of minutes. (One minor thing: takes a bit for hot water to the shower. This is very minor and should not deter anyone nor would deter me from returning- which I will.) Great stay, great apartment.

  • Reviewer: Marin

Comments: Nice place in a trendy area. In walking distance of most landmarks, but still comparatively quiet for Manhattan. Recommended.

  • Reviewer: Sophie

Comments: Karen's place is small, but lovely. It's in an amazing location less than one block from the High Line and very close the Whitney and other galleries. The walls are a bit thin, so some noise traveled from neighbors, but I guess this is to be expected in NYC. The picture of the bathroom sink is a little deceiving, the sink is tiny and the faucet over-sized for such a small sink that makes it a bit awkward to use. There is also no full length mirror, for those who are wondering. Overall though, I enjoyed my stay in the shoebox because of how easy it was to get around and how close it was to so many amazing sites/places. Thanks, Karen!

  • Reviewer: Vera

Comments: Apartment, location — just beautiful. Highly recommended.

  • Reviewer: David

Comments: Cute and affordable apartment located close to the High Line. Our flight to NYC was delayed several hours, but Karen remained flexible and possitive despite our late arrival. The apartment is quite small, as Karen clearly states in the description, but it should be sufficient for someone that just wants to spend a few days in NYC and use the apartment just to sleep and take a shower.

  • Reviewer: Sam

Comments: I love tiny homes and Karen's place is maybe the nicest I've ever found through airbnb, perfectly formed with nice pictures and furniture in a quiet, classy neighbourhood full of great restaurants, a half hour walk from Midtown. It's places like this that make paying half as much again for a hotel room half as nice something I will never again do as long as I live. Long live airbnb, and long live Karen's shoebox.

  • Reviewer: Ralph

Comments: This apartment was clean, located in a good area, and check-in/out was easy. Karen was a great communicator - clear and fast. The apartment had everything I needed including fast WiFi, iron, comfortable bed, air conditioning, desk to work at. For NYC, the apt was pretty quiet. The building has an elevator, although I used the stairs. Close to Chelsea Market, the High Line, and many, many great Chelsea and West Village spots. The place is really small, as advertised... but OK for solo/couple who do not plan on staying in for long stretches (no TV as well) - but that's not something I wanted. Its a bit of walk to the subways - but not a problem for those in good health and lots to see along the way.

  • Reviewer: Steve

Comments: Wonderful, cozy quarters on a quiet street in a great neighborhood. Just a block from the High Line, with easy access to the subway and appealing restaurants. Karen accommodated my late arrival very graciously and responded to every message I sent her within minutes. An excellent value for NYC.

  • Reviewer: Ann

Comments: Great place for a solo visit, or for a couple who doesn't need much space. The Shoebox is very clean and comfortable, and its location near the Highline and the Hudson River is perfect. I felt very safe coming home late at night in the neighborhood and once inside the building. I would probably stay again if I return to NYC.

  • Reviewer: Tony

Comments: What you see is what you get! Location is really stellar and Karen couldn't have been more of a breeze to deal with. Highly recommended :)

  • Reviewer: Jeff

Comments: This is a fabulous location. Everything is a few steps away. The art work is a bonus. It makes you instantly feel at home.

  • Reviewer: Jenna

Comments: Great 4-night stay for work! The space is exactly as pictured and was clean. Bathroom is charming and in better condition than expected. A perfect apartment for a solo traveler who doesn’t need a ton of amenities. Easy check-in and communication with the host. Would definitely recommend or stay again!

  • Reviewer: Whitney

Comments: Bed is comfy. Host is responsive. The neighborhood is excellent; it’s quiet and close to great restaurants and galleries. The window does not close completely, I had to stuff the opening with extra pillow cases. There are no electrical outlets in the bathroom and not many in the main room, so bringing an extension cord would be wise. Overall a pleasant stay.

Comments: Clean and comfortable. Think college dorm or size of a master bedroom. Convenient to everything. Tight shower space but good water pressure.

  • Reviewer: Scott

Comments: Thanks for a great stay!

  • Reviewer: Lucas

Comments: Karen's apartment is as shown in photos: comfortable, clean, located in a nice neighborhood and perfect for a short stay for one or two people. We had a special problem: the heating pipe rang made a strong noise while our stay every one or two hours, which didnt let us sleep at night. Karen was always attentive and predisposed to repair the problem with the building manager, but the problem was never solved while we were there. She reimbursed us $ 200 for a one-week stay as compensation for the problem that complicated the holidays. Beyond that, we appreciate your attention and your predisposition.

Comments: Awesome location!! Close to the E train and SO many great restaurants within blocks of the apartment. Not to mention the High Line which is a mere few yards away. Small- but just what I needed for an extended business trip. Comfortable and efficient. Karen was always available if I had any questions- Thanks for a great stay!

  • Reviewer: Kate

Comments: Karen was an amazing host. Any time I had a question, she responded quickly & kindly. Her apartment is exactly as shown and is the perfect little getaway for a visit to NYC. I absolutely loved the neighbourhood - with so many amenities and fabulous restaurants and super-easy shopping. And, of course, effortless access to the Hi-Line. Totally recommend Karen & her apartment.

Comments: Adorable place in a great location ! Tiny but mighty - an excellent value! My host was nice to work with and checked in to make sure all went smoothly --which i appreciated.. Highly recommended!

  • Reviewer: Sherry

Comments: The listing is very accurate in terms of the apartment and the neighborhood. If I were going to buy a place in NYC, it would be on this block! It is quiet, beautiful, a perfect location. The adjacency to the Highline is a bonus. The feel of the neighborhood and the people on the street made me feel like a local for the few days I was there.

Comments: Karen's place is one of a handful of airbnb apartments I've stayed in in New York, and now that I've discovered it I don't think I'd ever stay in another! Karen is an excellent host and the apartment, while tiny, is set up with everything you could need and is spotless and decorated with cool art. The location is fantastic - right in Chelsea, a one-minute walk to a High Line entrance, tons of great food options. I recommend it very, very highly.

Comments: Close to the High line, great eats, but on the 4th floor and in a quiet for NYC spot. Very comfortable. I highly recommend it for singles or a couple who want a very comfortable place to crash but are planning on being out and about most of the time (it's a shoebox!)

  • Reviewer: Romain

  • Reviewer: Jacob

Comments: Great location; close to easy transportation and plenty of things to do. Very clean; friendly interactions!

  • Reviewer: Christine (Tini)

Comments: Such a good location!!! I walked each morning along the Highline to the Javitz Center, about a half hour walk. Didn't miss the traffic or the expense of transport one bit. Entrance to the Highline less than a block away. Loved the little Italian place SO close for dinner and gelato (Peppe Giallo (Website hidden by Airbnb) This studio is a great space! Compact, but useful and elegant. Beautiful buildings just outside the window. Nice set-up in small space. I could use end of the table for breakfast (made my own in the tiny kitchenette), the middle for setting out my luggage to rummage through, and the rug between the bed and table for my morning yoga/stretching. Big bed made it all feel spacious. The shower is tight and the bathroom sink small, so go in knowing that and you'll be fine. All in all, really really delightful!

Comments: This apartment is great! Awesome decor and such a fun neighborhood. Very close to Chelsea Market, the Highline, and a great restaurant on the end of the block called Cook Shop. There is even a view of the Empire State Building from this apartment. I would stay there again in a heartbeat!

Comments: This was such a great surprise—will be back for sure! LOCATION: Cannot be beat. Across the street from the High Line, and across the other street from fabulous coffee in the leafy garden of The High Line Hotel. Street is beautiful as well. Walk short blocks to numerous restaurants, etc. APARTMENT: Super-comfy queen bed and excellent A/C and WiFi. Also appreciated the full-length mirror and the sizeable tabletop space. COMMUNICATION/CHECK-IN: Perfect. Karen was fast, accurate and charming. Mirek (who let us in) was lovely and gave us a tip about the nearby rooftop bar that was one of our highlights! This place is a shoebox, but these two shoes loved it.

Comments: I visited the shoebox for work travel, and feel so lucky to have found this place! It’s stylish, comfortable and convenient - and the location is AMAZING. It’s on a storybook-like street, is right in between Chelsea and Meatpacking, and has awesome natural light. Having lived in NYC, I do not take location and lighting for granted :) Karen is friendly, thorough and prompt. I could not ask for a better place and service when visiting NYC.

Comments: We loved our stay in the “shoebox”! The studio is laid out perfectly so that you never feel cramped. It is very clean, well-lit, and the shower does get nice and hot. The street is very quiet but the studio is still close to a lot of transit and of course, the high line! We’d love to come back!

Comments: The apartment is exactly as the description, if not better. My sis and I stayed here for a couple of days and it is definitely enough for two people. About the location - it is convenient to go everywhere from here either by walking, bus or subway. Every morning we would take a walk from Highline to Chelsea market to have breakfast, which is an advantage of this place. During the night, it feels pretty safe walking in this area. About the host - Karen is a great host. She always responded to my questions promptly. When we asked to check in earlier she was willing to do her best to coordinate. During our stay, she actually sent a message to remind us to leave the AC on so we would not suffer from the heat when coming back. I really think my trip to New York this time is the best one compare to previous and staying here is a big reason why.

Comments: I‘m traveling all over Manhattan and Brooklyn during my visits, and the West Chelsea/Meatpacking location of The Shoebox could not be more convenient for my work/play routine! This stylish, comfortable place is instantly accessible to major streets (while being located on a quaint one), and 5-10 minute walks to major transit hubs, including 1,2,3,A,C,E,L subway lines. Not to mention Hudson Yards, West Village and Flatiron areas are 10-20 minute walks. Always a “better than expected” stay here. Thanks, Karen!!

Comments: Karen’s place was great for our first stay in New York! It is perfectly located : we loved the atmosphere in Chelsea and it is very convenient to take the subway (there are 3 different stations nearby). Yes it is tiny as mentioned but we stayed 8 days and it was not a problem! The smell of fresh laundry when you enter the apartment after a long trip feels so good! The bed is very comfortable and the view on the Empire State when you wake up is amazing. Karen is a very responsive, helpful and accommodating host. We definitely recommend this place !

Ideal for a couple wishing to discover New-York and who wishes to stay in the pleasant neighborhood of Chelsea. The accommodation is small but functional. The bed is very comfortable. Finally Karen was very available and flexible for our arrival and departure. Thank you.

Comments: This is my third stay at Karen's place and hopefully it will always be available for my New York trips. Love the location, everything about checking in goes really smoothly. There are restaurants nearby, drug stores, and best of all the High Line! You can walk the High Line to the Whitney in about 10 minutes.

Comments: Perfect location in Manhattan on the sky line and close to indie eats and shops of West Village. The cafe on the corner was perfect for breakfast/brunch and generally opens earlier than advertised so you can get in before the crowds on the weekend. Sadly most of the art galleries were on exhibition change over that close to Christmas but the area is lovely and it’s a perfect excuse to come back

Comments: Great place to stay! The studio is located at the 4th floor, but don’t worry there is elevator, which is so amazing for a New York building. Chelsea area is my favorite are in NY! Its right in the middle. You can go uptown to see times sq, central park, etc and go downtown to all the cool places in east village, lower east side, etc! Place was clean! Great for two guests! And it has everything in the studio; small kitchen, refrigerator,& Kitchen appliances. Bonus: you can see the empire State building from the window :)
