Comments: Carol Ann's place is amazing! We flew into Kona and stayed for a night so we could go to the South Point Cliff Dive, black sands beach, and the lava flow at Kalapana - all a reasonable drive away. The studio has gorgeous views of the ocean and surrounding volcanic terrain, and Carol Ann and her partner were so welcoming and helpful re: plans for our adventures. In the morning we enjoyed eggs (from Carol Ann's chickens) and fresh ground coffee (that she provided) at a table outside with a view of the Pacific and lamented not being able to stay longer.

  • Reviewer: Kevin

Comments: Good place. Really nice people. Be aware the toilet and shower are not connected and the shower is outdoors. Aside from that the views were amazing and having a full kitchen was a life saver on the big island. The drive is somewhat Long but beautiful.

  • Reviewer: Ysasaman

Comments: It was a must go/seen/stay place. Lovely and beautiful private room. Fully equipped (refrigerator, stove, dishesh, wine glasses, mugs, rice, pasta, cream, fresh eggs,... everthing). Nicely decorated. Clean and quiet. It was a fully functional studio in excellent shape. The view was stunning. You could have your meal on top of the lava and enjoy the ocean view. The garden was super nice. Our host was frindly gentleman who we enjoyed talking to him. We highly loved our stay over there and will do it again for sure.

  • Reviewer: Kate

Comments: We really enjoyed our time at Carol Ann and Michael's place. Michael gave us great and thoughtful tips on local beaches and trails and we had a really comfortable stay. It was perfect for our needs and was in a really unique place amongst the lava flows and Ohia trees.

  • Reviewer: Maria

Comments: The ohana is really nice and the kitchen is well equipped. We had fresh coffee, fresh eggs, toast, cheese and even delicious banana bread. Michael is such a friendly host and we would definitely come back.

  • Reviewer: Marque

Comments: We are so grateful we were able to check in late. This was a very welcoming and interesting home. I would definitely stay here again if given the opportunity

  • Reviewer: Emily

Comments: This place was awesome! It is removed from other houses in the neighborhood so it was very peaceful, but it was an easy drive to the Ocean View grocery store, beaches, South Point, and ~an hour to the national park. The bed was super comfy and the studio was equipped with all the pots, pans, mugs, and silverware we needed for cooking. The shower and bathroom are both outside the room and the shower is outside, but it was easy to use and nice to shower under the stars! Carol Ann and Michael were both great communicators and provided everything we needed. Would highly recommend!

  • Reviewer: Michèle

Comments: we totally enjoyed our night at carol ann's place. its very quiet up there. the place is just lovely. showers and toilets outside but everything super clean. can highly recommend this place. it is definitely not a place were you usually stay and totally worth it.

  • Reviewer: Ethan

Comments: We had such a wonderful time here. Michael struck the perfect balance between hosting us and respecting our privacy. He gave us great recommendations on where to go and what to do, and it was so quiet and secluded. Kind of like camping but with the comforts of a shower, bathroom, bed, and kitchen. We would recommend this place to anyone.

Comments: This listing will not disappoint for your South Hawaii adventures. The hosts are amazing. The studio has everything you'd need :). And the fresh eggs were amazing :).

  • Reviewer: Xavier

Comments: Wonderful place uphill. Private studio, exterior shower (brilliant idea, morning shower under the sun: a-we-so-me). Outstanding hosts, i even got welcome cookies. So great. I would definitely come back.

Mahalo!

Comments: Great, quiet place to stay. A little far from the airports and nearby towns. If you are looking for solitude this is the place for you! Michael and Carol have a passion for Hawaii that is very admirable and infectious. Make sure to make time to walk around with Michael so he can tell you some of the Island stories!

Comments: Unexpected gem at ~4000 ft ( 1,200 meters ) elevation. Wonderful hosts, great local tips for sightseeing and relaxation. Loved every minute of staying in this home.

Comments: Carol Ann's studio is the perfect getaway if you are looking to get off the grid. She was an amazing host and provided us with everything we needed including eggs and coffee in the morning. Her gardens and decor surrounding the house are incredible!

  • Reviewer: Yoann

Comments: Carol Ann and her husband was very nice, friendly and thoughtful. They made cookies and lilikoi butter! The place is good even if it is humid. It is quiet. Furthermore, the garden’s decoration is hilarious! Good job!

  • Reviewer: Brendan

Comments: Don't let the"off the grid" setup scare you away. Nice clean space with all the amenities you might expect. Even had some English muffins a fresh eggs so we could make ourselves breakfast in the morning. Good location for visiting south point.

  • Reviewer: Fe

Comments: Carol Ann and Mike are great people! They were very kind and did everything to make us feel comfortable! Moreover they told us a lot of things about Hawaiian culture and about places to visit. The place itself is very beautiful- every morning you can watch different sunrises or even take a sunrise shower. The bed is very comfortable. We really appreciated Carol Ann stocked our fridge with some basics to eat since we arrived late in the evening and that Mike helped us to inflate our tires when they were flat. Thanks for everything!

  • Reviewer: Anne-Lene

Comments: A beautiful place to be at 3000 ft. with a view over lava flows and the sea below. Don't miss the spectacular sunset from the lanai: quite a sight the setting sun glowing like Halema‘Uma‘U Crater. And in the morning enjoy breakfast on the same lanei. Fresh farm eggs, home made muffins and jam are in the fridge. We liked the place!

  • Reviewer: Nicole

Comments: Communication with Carol Ann and Mike was easy and they offered great local insight. Location was lovely (be sure to make sunset), however a bit remote depending on your schedule. The unit was clean and well stocked, and the shower a bit tricky. A quiet location - do your research for restaurants in advance or bring food with you from bigger centers.

  • Reviewer: Chloé

Comments: On a passé un bon séjour au calme loin de tout. Nous avons été très bien accueillis et nourris. Carol Anne nous a préparé des bons petits biscuits et donné des oeufs du poulailler.

  • Reviewer: Cassidy

Comments: Carol and Micheal are really great hosts. We had been well greeting by the day we reached. We heard many knowledge about big island and their stories. They prepared "everything" you need in the room. It was wonderful experience to stay at their home and they have such an amazing ocean view of sunset! There are many interesting decorations surrounding their house. Highly recommended to stay here.

Comments: Amazing farm using sustainable energy with love to details. We had our own apartment in nature and enjoyed the breakfast outside on the sunny terrace with a wonderful view. Both hosts are very welcoming and provided us with a bunch of helpful tips. We would definitely go there again!

  • Reviewer: Fay

Comments: Carol Ann's studio was very tidy and warm and she was very responsive throughout the entire process. We enjoyed the view from the studio and had a great night of sleep. We will recommend this place to travelers coming this way and would come back if we are on the island again.

  • Reviewer: Gene

Comments: Very simple to get to this location from anywhere on the island. It’s close to some of the best sights In Hawaii. The hosts are the most thoughtful people ever. We enjoyed our stay in this clean and super cozy cabin that has all the amenities you need to have a perfect Airbnb experience. Thank you for the fresh eggs and the sample jar of your homemade Lilikoi butter spread!

  • Reviewer: Londa

Comments: Great place to stay. A bit out of the way of being close to sights, but worked out well for us as we were on our way to the east side of the island! The studio is wonderful! It was a nice surprise that there was some food provided in the kitchen and we cooked a nice dinner after arriving late! Really enjoyed the outdoor space and great night sky! Would definitely stay again!

Comments: One of the best Airbnb's for so many reasons: suite was exactly as described complete with comfy bed and pantry staples, very helpful hosts who responded quickly to all questions, beautiful view of gardens in the day and sunset in the evenings, in a peaceful and relaxing location. The local knowledge that Mr. Mike provided was so helpful for the rest of our trip (ie. we found the 'secret' beach on the north-west coast!). Two welcoming people with a gorgeous property to share.....what's not to love?!

  • Reviewer: Tom

Comments: It was a real surprise to find Carol Ann's comfy studio. I went to HOVE for business purposes and so it was wonderful to be able to find such a nice place to stay right in HOVE. I'd highly recommend it to anyone wanting to stay in the HOVE area for a few days or for a quiet retreat to get away from it all.

Comments: Enjoyed seeing Ocean View from this angle. Michael and Carol Ann were great and a wealth of local information. Thanks for a great stay

  • Reviewer: Kris

Comments: Carol Ann and Michael’s place is absolutely beautiful! It’s really cool what they’ve been able to do while off the grid. They were both very nice and helpful. I would definitely recommend their place!

  • Reviewer: Anne

Comments: Carol Ann greeted me and Michael showed me around the place, both were very friendly and nice. The room was very nice with huge windows, and if it had been a clear sky, it probably would have been amazing for stargazing. The shower is outside and the toilet is in an outhouse, so that might not be everyones cup of tea.. but you do have your private little courtyard to access these facilities. It is quite a bit drive up, through the rocky lava-landscape - which is quite the experience in it self, it felt like quite the alien landscape to me... The drive is quite rocky, and you need to be careful with your rental car.

  • Reviewer: Cameron

Comments: A cozy studio with an amazing view. Hosts were very friendly and made us feel welcome. The fresh eggs and coffee were delicious. Would love to stay here again. Thank you!

Comments: Awesome and unique place out in the oceanview area of Big Island. Worth going to for the scenery alone, but with the added bonus of great hospitality.

  • Reviewer: Daniel

Comments: This place is great! Totally off the beaten path (and grid) and our experience was consistent with all of the other positive reviews. Very thoughtful hosts with local knowledge...and super friendly!

  • Reviewer: Sarah

Comments: We stayed in 5 different Airbnb while visiting the big island. Carol Anne’s place was my favorite! Don’t let the outdoor shower deter you because it was great and there is plenty of privacy. The air is cool and refreshing at night. The place is clean and the big windows are awesome. I couldn’t say enough good things about our stay there.

Comments: Thoughtful touches were apparent and appreciated. We felt like we were staying in a family members home and loved being away from the hustle and bustle of a big city. You must step out in the wee hours of the night to take a look at the stars - absolutely spectacular! The eggs, English muffins, jam & coffee were and extra special touch and absolutely delicious!

  • Reviewer: Kelly

Comments: We really loved our stay in the cabin! It was very cozy, comfortable and peaceful - surrounded by nature all round. Carol Ann and Mike also generously stocked up the fridge with fresh eggs, bagels, muffins, and provided local coffee for a great start to the day! A short but wonderful stay.

  • Reviewer: Jim

Comments: Sweet little room. The view would have been spectacular if not for the vog. Like going to a cabin that is owned by a favourate(Canadian spelling) aunt and uncle. Everything was there that was needed, and they didn't bother you if your up to hanky panky. BTW, my 30th anniversary. Flush toilet, just steps outside. This was the first time my wife showered outside, there are curtains.

Comments: My friend and I had a great time staying here. We were adventuring every day all day and it was nice to come back to this tucked away place. Loved the outdoor shower and charm of the property in general. It’s a bit far back from the main road but for us it was a perfect retreat. Would definitely stay here again :)

Comments: The place was wonderful, with thoughtful touches throughout. I unfortunately wasn't able to meet Carol Ann as I had to get in and out of the place at late and early hours, but the communication was great, and I knew all I needed to to reach the property. It's a great, cozy, and private place that I would certainly recommend for future guests!

Comments: This place is awesome! We loved the outside shower and washing up outside by the garden and awesome view in the morning. They have a cool chicken farm too and we had some fresh eggs for dinner and for breakfast because they were taste so good and more better than those eggs from store. Only one thing that because I have supper light sleep so I could hear someone walking in the middle of night for few times and I was worried to bother them when I was trying to something at night or earlier morning. But overall I loved it!

  • Reviewer: Caroline

Comments: Great off the grid charming cabin. Views are amazing, especially at sunset. The bed is very comfy. Having the shower and bathroom outside creates a unique experience. Very clean.

Comments: This is an amazing property off the beaten path in Ocean view. You can really feel all the love and passion that went into making this home so beautiful. We loved our space- everything you would need including a small tv, free WiFi, towels, amazing eggs from their chickens in the fridge and all the cooking equipment you would need. The outdoor shower was exciting- fun to be outside in the elements. The views from the room are fabulous- during the day you can see the gorgeous Ohi’a forests and the ocean in the distance, and at night the star-gazing is amazing. The power did go out twice when we were there, but something we were expecting from the off-grid style home. It’s very dark in this neighborhood so be careful when driving at night. Someone ahead of us during the night ended up hitting a stray dog with their car. It was fun to explore another area on our beautiful big island! Mahalo nui loa Carol Ann and Michael for a fun adventure.

  • Reviewer: Arthur

Comments: Carol Ann’s place is great! She thought of everything in details. We even had eggs, bagels, jam for breakfast! This is a wild house location, amazing sky at night, cozy place for a couple on the slope of Mauna Loa. The area is remote so expect a long drive from the main cities like Kona.

  • Reviewer: Tod

Comments: We arrived late at night and were greeted by Michael who made us feel immediately at home and showed us the ropes of the place. I especially loved the outdoor showers and eating areas. It’s like you and nature are one at this indoor/outdoor, quiet, secluded, eclectic little place. There are lots of things to look and and the artistic style is very funky— in a good way. If you are into seeing how creatively people can build a home from a mix of standard and non-standard materials, you’ll be as excited about this place as I was. In the daylight, the beauty was breathtaking. You feel like you are in your own succulent garden. We were provided with the most well stocked fridge and pantry we have ever seen at an Airbnb. Fresh eggs, jelly, cream cheese, butter, bagels, sparkling cider, English muffins, water, pantry full of stuff! There are lots of tips and suggestions of things to do in the area. Mostly, we just sat and enjoyed the view and the surroundings before we headed out. Oh and there are chickens and snuggly cats. So if you are missing your critter cuddles (like I always am), one of the lovely cats will show you some love if you want. But they stayed to their own area so if you didn’t want to see cats, you might never know they were there. The place has to be your style. If you are looking for a motel room, keep looking. If you want an earthy, relaxing, clean, creative place, stay here!

Comments: Though quite a drive from airport, we were happy to stay in “the cabin in the clouds “.! Carol Ann and Michael are super hosts! The Ocean view, vast horizon, and lovely garden patio was delightful! Not so sure about the outdoor bathroom and shower, a little too cold for me. We enjoyed an unexpected supply of breakfast treats and well-stocked with an assortment of can goods and seasonings!

Great accomodation with amazing view. Everything you could need (towels, pantry, breakfast,...) is already there. Nice and relaxed hosts who give you valuable tipps for your stay on the island.

  • Reviewer: Jack

Comments: Sweet little spot on a farm on the southwestern corner of Big Island. The hosts were super responsive and hospitable, the space was tiny and comfortable. The toilet is in a separate outhouse, but it was clean and convenient. The shower and bath sink are also outside, which can take getting used to, but are totally fine. I wish I could’ve spent more time on the farm itself, which had some chickens, cats, and other quaint decorations. You should have a car as it’s about 5 miles from the nearest highway and an hour plus to Kona or Hilo. Great value!

  • Reviewer: Sean

Comments: Carol and Michael were excellent hosts! Not only did they meet us in person but they also made sure we caught an amazing view of the stars and the blood moon on their property. Amazing! The space is incredibly cozy, and the eggs, bagels, and kona French press coffee they provided made an “eggsellent” start to our day. Overall brilliant place to stay on the Kona side of the big island.

Comments: Michael and Ann's place was super cute and away from the city in their cute ranch. Their place is at a beautiful 4000ft altitude from where the ocean is visible and the stars at night appear very bright and beautiful. We especially liked thier attention to detail. Everything had clear instructions on how to use/find to help a first timer in the place. The fridge was stocked with their farm eggs, bagels, butter and other breakfast material. We had eggs with bagels in the morning and the eggs were absolutely delicious. We will definitely recommend their place for anyone who wants to have an experience in a quiet place, at a high altitude where you can see sunrise and sunset. Yet you will be few minutes drive from Kona where there's a lot to do.

Comments: This place was so comfy and cozy. I felt like I was glamping. I especially loved that the kitchen was well stocked and we could make breakfast with eggs from the farm. There were not a lot of options for food nearby so having food available was great. This was my anniversary trip and my husband and I had a great time. Carol and Mike even had sparkling apple juice in the fridge upon our arrival. I loved the set up of the place and I felt safe. My husband enjoyed speaking with Mike and I loved playing with the animals (chickens and cats). Great time and great hosts.
